In the final years of his life, Dante settled with more or less security in the city of Ravenna, 1 exiled from his native Florence. Among the hallowed churches of the ancient city, he would finish the remaining cantos of the Paradiso, and engage in a little-known correspondence with the Bolognese poet and professor of Latin, Giovanni del Virgilio. This exchange of four letters begins with an initial epistolary Carmina sent by Del Virgilio in 1319, and ends with the death of Dante in 1321. 2 Dante responded with two bucolic poems of 68 lines 97 respectively. Though his Eclogues have a merit as stand-alone poetic pieces, they are best read in dialogue with the letters sent by Del Virgilio. Approached successively, the four poems reveal a witty banter and highly literary repartee, thickly layered with the cultural mileux of the time period. Dante defends his positions with sequences of clever rebuttals that at first seem very obscure, however eventually reveal themselves as a lively pedantic dialogue when examined at any great length. The translation and commentary presented in this thesis attempt to provide the necessary tools for English speakers to approach the Latin itself, which has not received very close attention in the past thirty years of critical scholarship. This origins of this thesis sprung from an interest in the wide genre of late medieval and early Renaissance pastoral poetry, particularly the bucolic poems of Boccaccio and Petrarch. My zeal for the genre was stirred by stints of research in a number of libraries scattered around the Italian city of Urbino, during a spring semester abroad at the Università degli Studi di Carlo Bo. The initial goal for the thesis was simply to provide an English translation Dante's two poems, however the discovery of previous scholarship greatly leavened the project. It thus includes, as described by its proposal, an edited edition text, a translation in modern English verse, and a commentary to accompany the Latin. The translation hopes to strike a balance between literal and figurative meanings, and follows the Latin closely enough to be used as an aid. The commentary focuses on a wide range of issues, from grammatical and 1 C. It can also be used to investigate many correspondences with classical poets who Dante both consciously and unconsciously makes use of.
