Neural network potentials (NNPs) have been shown to be particularly effective in conducting atomistic simulations for such purposes. However, existing NNPs are generally designed for narrow target materials, making them unsuitable for broader applications in material discovery. To overcome this issue, we have developed a universal NNP called PreFerred Potential (PFP), which is able to handle any combination of 45 elements. Particular emphasis is placed on the datasets, which include a diverse set of virtual structures used to attain the universality. We demonstrated the applicability of PFP in selected domains: lithium diffusion in LiFeSO${}_4$F, molecular adsorption in metal-organic frameworks, an order-disorder transition of Cu-Au alloys, and material discovery for a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst. They showcase the power of PFP, and this technology provides a highly useful tool for material discovery. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('2106.14583v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('2106.14583v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 1 April, 2022; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 28 June, 2021; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> June 2021. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">Previous title: "PFP: Universal Neural Network Potential for Material Discovery"</span> </p> </li> <li class="arxiv-result"> <div class="is-marginless"> <p class="list-title is-inline-block"><a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.09935">arXiv:2002.09935</a> <span> [<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2002.09935">pdf</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/format/2002.09935">other</a>] </span> </p> <div class="tags is-inline-block"> <span class="tag is-small is-link tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Computational Physics">physics.comp-ph</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="High Energy Physics - Experiment">hep-ex</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="High Energy Physics - Phenomenology">hep-ph</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Quantum Physics">quant-ph</span> </div> <div class="is-inline-block" style="margin-left: 0.5rem"> <div class="tags has-addons"> <span class="tag is-dark is-size-7">doi</span> <span class="tag is-light is-size-7"><a class="" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s41781-020-00047-7">10.1007/s41781-020-00047-7 <i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a></span> </div> </div> </div> <p class="title is-5 mathjax"> Event Classification with Quantum Machine Learning in High-Energy Physics </p> <p class="authors"> <span class="search-hit">Authors:</span> <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Terashi%2C+K">Koji Terashi</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Kaneda%2C+M">Michiru Kaneda</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Kishimoto%2C+T">Tomoe Kishimoto</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Saito%2C+M">Masahiko Saito</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Sawada%2C+R">Ryu Sawada</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Tanaka%2C+J">Junichi Tanaka</a> </p> <p class="abstract mathjax"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Abstract</span>: <span class="abstract-short has-text-grey-dark mathjax" id="2002.09935v2-abstract-short" style="display: inline;"> We present studies of quantum algorithms exploiting machine learning to classify events of interest from background events, one of the most representative machine learning applications in high-energy physics. We focus on variational quantum approach to learn the properties of input data and evaluate the performance of the event classification using both simulators and quantum computing devices. Comparison of the performance with standard multi-variate classification techniques based on a boosted-decision tree and a deep neural network using classical computers shows that the quantum algorithm has comparable performance with the standard techniques at the considered ranges of the number of input variables and the size of training samples. The variational quantum algorithm is tested with quantum computers, demonstrating that the discrimination of interesting events from background is feasible. Characteristic behaviors observed during a learning process using quantum circuits with extended gate structures are discussed, as well as the implications of the current performance to the application in high-energy physics experiments. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('2002.09935v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('2002.09935v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 5 January, 2021; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 23 February, 2020; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> February 2020. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">11 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables; revised with comments from the journal</span> </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> Comput. In particular, materials development (which has brought a lot of innovation by finding new and better functional materials) is one of the most attractive scientific fields. To apply machine learning to actual materials development, collaboration between scientists and machine learning is becoming inevitable. However, such collaboration has been restricted so far due to black box machine learning, in which it is difficult for scientists to interpret the data-driven model from the viewpoint of material science and physics. Here, we show a material development success story that was achieved by good collaboration between scientists and one type of interpretable (explainable) machine learning called factorized asymptotic Bayesian inference hierarchical mixture of experts (FAB/HMEs). Based on material science and physics, we interpreted the data-driven model constructed by the FAB/HMEs, so that we discovered surprising correlation and knowledge about thermoelectric material. Guided by this, we carried out actual material synthesis that led to identification of a novel spin-driven thermoelectric material with the largest thermopower to date. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('1903.02175v1-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('1903.02175v1-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 6 March, 2019; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> March 2019. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">17 pages, 5 figures</span> </p> </li> <li class="arxiv-result"> <div class="is-marginless"> <p class="list-title is-inline-block"><a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.00219">arXiv:1903.00219</a> <span> [<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/1903.00219">pdf</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/format/1903.00219">other</a>] </span> </p> <div class="tags is-inline-block"> <span class="tag is-small is-link tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Computational Physics">physics.comp-ph</span> </div> </div> <p class="title is-5 mathjax"> Model-Free Cluster Analysis of Physical Property Data using Information Maximizing Self-Argument Training </p> <p class="authors"> <span class="search-hit">Authors:</span> <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Sawada%2C+R">Ryohto Sawada</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Iwasaki%2C+Y">Yuma Iwasaki</a>, <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Ishida%2C+M">Masahiko Ishida</a> </p> <p class="abstract mathjax"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Abstract</span>: <span class="abstract-short has-text-grey-dark mathjax" id="1903.00219v1-abstract-short" style="display: inline;"> We present the semi-supervised IMSAT, a versatile classification method that works without labeled data and can be tuned by little additional information. The LXe detector is designed to detect the 52.8\,MeV photon from the lepton flavour violating decay $渭^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ 纬$ and is based on $900\,\ell$ LXe with a highly granular scintillation readout by 4092 VUV-MPPCs with an active area of $139\,\mathrm{mm}^2$ each, totalling $0.57\,\mathrm{m}^2$. The VUV-MPPC shows an excellent performance in LXe, which includes a high photon detection efficiency (PDE) up to 21\% for the LXe scintillation light in the VUV range, a high gain, a low probability of the optical cross-talk and the after-pulsing, a low dark count rate and a good single photoelectron resolution. The large active area of the VUV-MPPC is formed by connecting four independent small VUV-MPPC chips in series to avoid the increase of the sensor capacitance and thus, to have a short pulse-decay-time, which is crucial for high rate experiments. Performance tests of 4180 VUV-MPPCs produced for the LXe detector were also carried out at room temperature prior to the installation to the detector and all of them with only a few exceptions were found to work properly. The design and performance of the VUV-MPPC are described in detail as well as the results from the performance tests at room temperature. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('1809.08701v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('1809.08701v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 5 February, 2019; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 23 September, 2018; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> September 2018. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">Revised version accepted for publication in Nucl. We determined the residual beam polarization at the thin stopping target, by measuring the asymmetry of the angular distribution of Michel decay positrons as a function of energy. The initial muon beam polarization at the production is predicted to be $P_渭 = -1$ by the Standard Model (SM) with massless neutrinos. We estimated our residual muon polarization to be $P_渭 = -0.85 \pm 0.03 ~ {\rm (stat)} ~ { }^{+ 0.04}_{-0.05} ~ {\rm (syst)}$ at the stopping target, which is consistent with the SM predictions when the depolarizing effects occurring during the muon production, propagation and moderation in the target are taken into account. The knowledge of beam polarization is of fundamental importance in order to model the background of our ${\megsign}$ search induced by the muon radiative decay: $渭^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} \bar谓_渭 谓_{\rm e} 纬$. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('1510.04743v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('1510.04743v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 28 April, 2016; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 15 October, 2015; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> October 2015. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> Eur. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). The key features of this new MEG upgrade are an increased rate capability of all detectors to enable running at the intensity frontier and improved energy, angular and timing resolutions, for both the positron and photon arms of the detector. On the positron-side a new low-mass, single volume, high granularity tracker is envisaged, in combination with a new highly segmented, fast timing counter array, to track positron from a thinner stopping target. The photon-arm, with the largest liquid xenon (LXe) detector in the world, totalling 900 l, will also be improved by increasing the granularity at the incident face, by replacing the current photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a larger number of smaller photosensors and optimizing the photosensor layout also on the lateral faces. A new DAQ scheme involving the implementation of a new combined readout board capable of integrating the diverse functions of digitization, trigger capability and splitter functionality into one condensed unit, is also under development. We describe here the status of the MEG experiment, the scientific merits of the upgrade and the experimental methods we plan to use. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('1301.7225v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('1301.7225v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 4 February, 2013; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 30 January, 2013; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> January 2013. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">A. MEG is a small-size experiment ($\approx 50-60$ physicists at any time) with a life span of about 10 years. The limited human resource available, in particular in the core offline group, emphasized the importance of reusing software and exploiting existing expertise. Great care has been devoted to provide a simple system that hides implementation details to the average programmer. That allowed many members of the collaboration to contribute to the development of the software of the experiment with limited programming skill. The offline software is based on two frameworks: {\bf REM} in FORTRAN 77 used for the event generation and detector simulation package {\bf GEM}, based on GEANT 3, and {\bf ROME} in C++ used in the readout simulation {\bf Bartender} and in the reconstruction and analysis program {\bf Analyzer}. Event display in the simulation is based on GEANT 3 graphic libraries and in the reconstruction on ROOT graphic libraries. Data are stored in different formats in various stage of the processing. The frameworks include utilities for input/output, database handling and format conversion transparent to the user. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('1102.0106v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('1102.0106v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 20 June, 2011; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 1 February, 2011; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> February 2011. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">Presented at the IEEE NSS Knoxville, 2010 Revised according to referee's remarks Accepted by European Physical Journal Plus</span> </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> Eur.Phys.J.Plus 126:60,2011 </p> </li> <li class="arxiv-result"> <div class="is-marginless"> <p class="list-title is-inline-block"><a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/physics/0407033">arXiv:physics/0407033</a> <span> [<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/physics/0407033">pdf</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/ps/physics/0407033">ps</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/format/physics/0407033">other</a>] </span> </p> <div class="tags is-inline-block"> <span class="tag is-small is-link tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Instrumentation and Detectors">physics.ins-det</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="High Energy Physics - Experiment">hep-ex</span> </div> <div class="is-inline-block" style="margin-left: 0.5rem"> <div class="tags has-addons"> <span class="tag is-dark is-size-7">doi</span> <span class="tag is-light is-size-7"><a class="" href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nima.2005.02.029">10.1016/j.nima.2005.02.029 <i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a></span> </div> </div> </div> <p class="title is-5 mathjax"> Absorption of Scintillation Light in a 100 $\ell$ Liquid Xenon$纬$ Ray Detector and Expected Detector Performance </p> <p class="authors"> <span class="search-hit">Authors:</span> <a href="/search/physics?searchtype=author&query=Baldini%2C+A">A. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a 100L prototype with an active volume of 372x372x496 mm$^3$ to study the scintillation light absorption. We have developed a method to evaluate the light absorption, separately from elastic scattering of light, by measuring cosmic rays and $伪$ sources. By using a suitable purification technique, an absorption length longer than 100 cm has been achieved. The effects of the light absorption on the energy resolution are estimated by Monte Carlo simulation. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('physics/0407033v1-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('physics/0407033v1-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 6 July, 2004; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> July 2004. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">18 pages, 10 figures (eps). It is shown that this information can be used for deriving the LXe optical properties in the VUV.
