<A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>He said this, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the <i>common</i> purse he carried what was put in<i>to it.</i> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Jesus therefore said, <FR>Let her alone, she hath reserved this <Fr><i>as</i><FR> for the day of my burial.<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><FR>For the poor ye have always with you, but me ye have not always.<Fr><p> <A name="10"></a><p class="hdg">The Plot to Kill Lazarus<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And a great number of the Jews understanding that He was there, came not only on account of Jesus, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom He <i>had</i> raised from the dead. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Wherefore the chief priests took counsel to put Lazarus also to death. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Because on his account many of the Jews went away <i>from them,</i> and believed on Jesus.<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">The Triumphal Entry<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/21.htm">Matthew 21:1–11</a>; <a href ="../mark/11.htm">Mark 11:1–11</a>; <a href ="../luke/19.htm#28">Luke 19:28–40</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The next day a great multitude that were come to the feast, hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm-trees, <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>and went out to meet Him, and cried, Hosanna! blessed <i>be</i> the king of Israel, who cometh in the name of the Lord. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Jesus having gotten a young ass sat thereon, <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>as it is written, "Fear not, O daughter of Sion, behold thy king cometh sitting on an ass's colt." <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now his disciples did not understand these <i>things</i> at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these <i>things</i> were written concerning Him, and <i>that</i> they had done thus unto Him. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the people that were with Him testified, that He called Lazarus out of the grave, and raised him from the dead: <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>and for this reason the people went to meet Him, because they heard that He had done this miracle. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The pharisees therefore said among themselves, Do ye <i>not</i> see that ye prevail nothing? Behold, <i>all</i> the world is gone after Him.<p> <A name="21"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts His Death<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And among those that came up to worship at the feast there were certain Greeks: <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>that came to Philip <i>who was</i> of Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we have a desire to see Jesus. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><i>And</i> Philip cometh and telleth Andrew, and then Andrew and Philip told Jesus. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And Jesus answered them saying, <FR>The time is come that the Son of man is to be glorified.<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><i>Though</i><FR> I tell you indeed and in truth, Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it remaineth alone; but if it die, it produceth much fruit.<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><i>So</i><FR> he, that loveth his life, shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world, shall preserve it unto life eternal.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>If any <Fr><i>man</i><FR> would serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: and if any <Fr><i>one</i><FR> serve me, him will my Father honour.<Fr><p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>Now is my soul troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this <Fr><i>cause</i><FR> came I to this hour.<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>Father, glorify thy name.<Fr> Then came a voice from heaven, <i>saying,</i> I have both glorified <i>it,</i> and will glorify <i>it</i> again. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>The people therefore that stood <i>by,</i> and heard <i>it,</i> said, That it was thunder: <i>but</i> others said, <i>it was</i> an angel spake to Him. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Jesus answered and said, <FR>This voice came not for my sake, but for yours.<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>Now is the judgement of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, shall draw all <Fr><i>men</i><FR> unto me.<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>This He said, signifying what death He should die. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>The people answered Him, We have heard out of the law, that the Messiah abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, <FR>the Son of man must be lifted up?<Fr> who is this Son of man? <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then Jesus said unto them, <FR>Yet a little while the light is <Fr><i>to be</i><FR> with you; walk while ye have the light, least darkness overtake you; for he that walketh in the dark knoweth not whither he goeth.<Fr> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light.<Fr> These <i>things</i> spake Jesus, and <i>then</i> went away, and concealed himself from them.<p> <A name="38"></a><p class="hdg">Belief and Unbelief<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But though He had done so many miracles before their eyes, <i>yet</i> they did not believe on Him: <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span><i>so</i> that the word of Esaias the prophet was fulfilled, which he spake, <i>saying,</i> Lord, who hath believed our report?
