It is often used in the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible, to draw attention to a significant event, statement, or person. The term serves as an imperative, urging the reader or listener to pay close attention to what follows. In the context of the Bible, "ecce" is used to highlight divine revelations, prophetic announcements, and important declarations.

Biblical Context:
In the Berean Standard Bible , the equivalent term "behold" is frequently used to emphasize moments of divine intervention or revelation. It serves as a literary device to capture the reader's attention and underscore the importance of the message being conveyed.

Old Testament Examples:
1. Genesis 1:29 : "Then God said, 'Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food.'" Here, "behold" introduces God's provision for humanity, emphasizing the completeness and generosity of His creation.

2. Isaiah 7:14 : "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." This prophetic announcement is marked by "behold," highlighting the miraculous nature of the virgin birth and the significance of the coming Messiah.

New Testament Examples:
1. Matthew 1:23 : "Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel" (which means, "God with us"). This verse echoes the prophecy from Isaiah, using "behold" to draw attention to the fulfillment of God's promise through the birth of Jesus Christ.

2. John 1:29 : "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!'" Here, John the Baptist uses "behold" to identify Jesus as the sacrificial Lamb, central to the salvation narrative.

Theological Significance:
The use of "ecce" or "behold" in Scripture is not merely a stylistic choice but carries theological weight. It often introduces divine actions or truths that are pivotal to the biblical narrative. By calling attention to these moments, the term invites believers to reflect on God's sovereignty, faithfulness, and the unfolding of His redemptive plan.

Cultural and Historical Impact:
Throughout Christian history, the term "ecce" has been immortalized in art, music, and literature. One of the most famous uses is in the phrase "Ecce Homo" ("Behold the Man"), referring to Pontius Pilate's presentation of Jesus to the crowd in John 19:5. This moment has been depicted in countless works of art, symbolizing the suffering and sacrifice of Christ.

Conclusion:
While the term "ecce" itself is not found in the English translations of the Bible, its equivalent "behold" serves as a powerful tool to draw attention to God's actions and messages. It underscores the importance of divine revelation and invites believers to witness the unfolding of God's plan with reverence and awe.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
ECCE HOMO
ek'-se ho'-mo (idou ho anthropos, "Behold, the man!" John 19:5):

Pilate's statement regarding Jesus during His trial. While the significance of this statement is somewhat debatable, yet there is little doubt, as judged from his attitude and statement immediately following, that Pilate was endeavoring to appeal to the accusers' sympathies and to point out to them the manly qualities of Jesus. The ordinary punctuation which places an exclamation point after "Behold" and a period after "the man" is evidently incorrect if the grammatical structure in the Greek is to be observed, which gives to the second and third words the nominative form, and which therefore admits of a mild exclamation, and therefore of the emphasis upon "the man." Some, however, hold the contrary view and maintain that the utterance was made in a spirit of contempt and ridicule, as much as to say, "Behold here a mere man." See especially on this view Marcus Dods in Expositor's Greek Testament. It would seem, however, that the former of the two views would be sustained by the chief facts in the case.

Walter G.
