She is currently a Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Industrial and Systems Engineering, and has held visiting positions at KTH (Stockholm, Sweden), Stanford University and Lund University (Sweden). She serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, on the IEEE Board of Governors for the Control Systems Society (CSS) and is the President-Elect of CSS. Carolyn is an IEEE Fellow, and was the recipient of a NSF CAREER Award, an ONR Young Investigator Award, and local teaching honors. How is the Richard C. Maclaurin Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a B.A.Sc. (Aerospace) from the University of Toronto in 1987, and his S.M. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT in 1990 and 1993, respectively, and then studied for 1.5 years at MIT as a postdoctoral associate. Prior to joining MIT in 2000, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. Dr. How was the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Control Systems Magazine (2015-19), an associate editor for the AIAA Journal of Aerospace Information Systems (2012-21) and IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (2018-21). He was the Program Vice-chair (tutorials) for the 2021 Conference on Decision and Control and will be the Program Chair for the American Control Conference in 2025. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Control System Society (CSS) for 2020-22, is on the IEEE CSS Long Range Planning Committee (2022 – ), is a member of the IEEE CSS Technical Committee on Aerospace Control and the Technical Committee on Intelligent Control, was a member of the IEEE Fellows Selection committee for CSS (2021-22), and since 2021, he serves as the AIAA Director on the American Automatic Control Council. He is also the Director of the Ford-MIT Alliance and was a member of the USAF Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) from 2014-17. His research focuses on robust planning and learning under uncertainty with an emphasis on multiagent systems, and he was the planning and control lead for the MIT DARPA Urban Challenge team. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including being inducted into the University of Toronto Engineering Hall of Distinction (2022), receiving the 2020 IEEE CSS Distinguished Member Award, the 2020 AIAA Intelligent Systems Award, the 2015 AeroLion Technologies Outstanding Paper Award for Unmanned Systems, the 2015 IEEE CSS Video Clip Contest, the 2011 IFAC Automatica award for best applications paper, and the 2002 Institute of Navigation Burka Award. He also received the Air Force Commander's Public Service Award in 2017. Bitmead</strong> (F’91) received the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Newcastle University, Callaghan, NSW Australia, in 1977 and 1980, respectively, and the B.Sc. degree in applied mathematics from Sydney University, Sydney, NSW, Australia, in 1976.</p> <p>He is a Control Theorist with a long experience in control applications in many industrial sectors. His theoretical work is strongly informed and guided by these applications. He occupies the Cymer Corporation Endowed Chair in mechanical and aerospace engineering with the University of California, San Diego, CA, USA.</p> <p>Dr. Bitmead was the President of the IEEE Control Systems Society for 2019. He was a member of the IFAC Council from 1996 to 2002 and is the Editor-in-Chief for the IFAC Journal of Systems and Control. He is an accredited and active Australian Rules Football Umpire. He is the Director of the Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science & Engineering -- BU's federation and convergence accelerator of all University centers and initiatives in this area of research. He obtained a Diploma (1991) from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and an M.S. (1993) and a Ph.D. (1996) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has been at Boston University since 1996. His current research interests lie in the fields of optimization, control, stochastic systems, robust learning, computational medicine, and computational biology. He has published a monograph and more than 250 refereed papers in these topics, and he has been the primary advisor to 29 Ph.D. theses.</p> <p>Prof. Paschalidis' work has been recognized with a CAREER award (2000) from the U.S. National Science Foundation, the second prize in the 1997 George E. Nicholson</p> <p>paper competition by INFORMS, the best student paper award at the 9th Intl. Symposium of Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks (WiOpt 2011) won by one of his Ph.D. students for a joint paper, an IBM/IEEE Smarter Planet Challenge Award, and a finalist best paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). His work on protein docking has been recognized for best performance in modeling selected protein-protein complexes against 64 other predictor groups (2009 Protein Interaction Evaluation Meeting). His recent work on health informatics won an IEEE Computer Society Crowd Sourcing Prize and a best paper award by the International Medical Informatics Associations (IMIA). He was an invited participant at the 2002 Frontiers of Engineering Symposium organized by the National Academy of Engineering, and at the 2014 National Academies Keck Futures Initiative (NAFKI) Conference. Prof. Paschalidis is a Fellow of both IEEE and IFAC and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems from 2013 until 2019.
