This study covers the two last decades of the 18th century of the General Hospital of Geneva. In a first part it analyses the space alotted to sick and healthy people, respectively. The internal organization of the hospital discloses the criteria used for selection. The second part analyses the population of patients with respect to age, duration of hospitalization and, if recorded in a meaningful way, the diseases. The majority of patients were under 30 years old and had a stay of less than 30 days. A third aspect of médicalisation studied is the role played by various groups of personnel. It shows that the administrators allowed but a limited autonomy to the physicians and surgeons, yet tried to hire high-ranking medical personnel which in turn contributed to the modernization of the hospital.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Summary The doctor-patient relationship through epistolary consultation : Geoffroy’s correspondence in the early Eighteenth Century Former epistolary consultations which related a demand for medical advice with the doctor’s answer, or the consultation itself, shed some light on the doctor-patient relationship. Thanks to the occupational correspondence of Parisian physician Étienne François Geoffroy, we shall strive to describe the social framework and practices of these formerly distant consultations, according to both the epistolary codes and the involvement of the patient’s family and medical environment. Distance from the physician is in no way an obstacle to the exchange of medical advice and demands for patients accustomed to travels and to correspondence. A certain social or convenience distance, as well as on the contrary some familiarity with the individuals involved by circumstances in such a correspondence, may well play a role in the course of the exchange. Moreover, the presence alongside the patient of his circle and medical environment reveals the complexity of the doctor/patient relationship which is seldom exclusive of any other interaction. Finally, geographical or social distance are not contradictory with the patient’s custody for weeks or even years for those who fully trust the Parisian physician.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

TPE has always existed in the form of advices, but actually it was born in 1922 with the first treatment with insulin. It has had three periods. The first period spans half a century; pedagogy was vertical, authoritarian, passive. The second period began in 1970s; it was characterized by the development of a humanist, active, constructivist pedagogy. The third period, since the end of the 20th century, is dominated by the skill-based approach and by the management by objectives.
