The term is used in different contexts throughout the Bible, often reflecting the cultural and societal norms of the times.

1. Measurement: In the Old Testament, "deal" is frequently used as a unit of measurement, particularly in the context of offerings and sacrifices. For example, in the instructions for the grain offering, a "tenth deal" of fine flour is specified. This is seen in Leviticus 14:21, where it states, "But if he is poor and cannot afford these offerings, he is to take one male lamb as a guilt offering to be waved, to make atonement for him, along with a tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, a log of oil."

2. Transactions and Agreements: The concept of dealing in terms of transactions or agreements is also present in the Bible. This can involve trade, business dealings, or covenants between individuals or groups. In Genesis 23, Abraham negotiates with the Hittites to purchase a burial site for his wife Sarah, demonstrating the importance of fair dealings and agreements in biblical narratives.

3. Interpersonal Interactions: The Bible often addresses how individuals should deal with one another, emphasizing justice, fairness, and kindness. In Micah 6:8, the prophet outlines what the Lord requires of His people: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" This verse underscores the importance of dealing justly and mercifully with others.

4. Divine Dealings: The Bible also speaks of God's dealings with humanity. These divine interactions are characterized by justice, mercy, and faithfulness. In Psalm 103:10, it is written, "He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our iniquities." This highlights God's grace and mercy in His dealings with His people.

5. Moral and Ethical Conduct: The Bible provides guidance on ethical dealings, urging believers to conduct themselves with integrity and honesty. Proverbs 11:1 states, "Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but an accurate weight is His delight." This proverb emphasizes the importance of honesty in all dealings, reflecting a broader biblical principle of living righteously.

In summary, the concept of "deal" in the Bible encompasses a range of meanings, from specific measurements in religious rituals to broader themes of justice, fairness, and divine interaction. The biblical perspective on dealing is deeply rooted in the principles of righteousness, integrity, and mercy, guiding believers in their relationships with God and others.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Deal, Tenth
see OMER.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. The verb "to deal" often means "to apportion," "to distribute" (compare 2 Samuel 6:19 1 Chronicles 16:3; Isaiah 58:7 Romans 12:3), but more frequently it is used in the sense of "to act" "to do," "to have transaction of any kind with." In the Psalms "to deal" always means "to confer benefit," "to deal bountifully," with the exception of Psalm 105:25, where it means "to deal subtly with." The expression "to deal," i.e. "to be engaged in," is not found in the Scriptures.
