For instance, she’d got clean and stayed clean. Or so I thought. For now it was possible that Budgie’s effort at getting normal again had failed. Though it is normal to die.<br><br>*<br><br>Nothing makes Penstemon happier than handing a favourite book to someone who wants to read it. I’m the same. I suppose you could say this delights us although ‘delight’ is a word I rarely use. Delight seems insubstantial; happiness feels grounded; ecstasy is what I shoot for; satisfaction is hardest to attain.<br><br>*<br><br>Sometimes I want to weep when I detect both talent and abused talent in a writer. The life of the writer cannot help but haunt the narrative.<br><br>*<br><br>‘There is something in me that aches to do the wrong thing,’ said Louise. Her voice was muffled by a knitted shawl across her face. ‘That’s what being so very good as a child can do to a person. I almost always resist, but I understand when other people don’t. The urge is very strong.’<br><br>‘I have a different urge,’ said Penstemon. ‘I don’t like heights because I’m instantly seized by the urge to leap. L’appel du vide. The call of the void.’ Her voice was fake-wise. She nodded at Asema.<br><br>Jackie hadn’t given me a dictionary for nothing. I spoke up.<br><br>‘There’s a word for your impulse, Louise. Cacoëthes,’ I said to her. ‘The urge to do something somewhat wrong. Not something unspeakable or horrific. Just something you know is a bad idea.’<br><br>‘Like eating paddy rice, apparently,’ said Gruen.<br><br>‘There must be a malady related to Louise’s other affliction,’ said Asema, looking at her phone. ‘I’ve got it. Cacoëthes scribendi. An unbearable need to write. Lots of people have it.’<br><br>‘I don’t,’ said Jackie.<br><br>*<br><br>‘People die from reading books, of course!’<br><br>‘What I’m trying to say…’<br><br>‘Books aren’t meant to be safe. Sadly, or heroically, depending on the way you look at it, books do kill people.’<br><br>‘In places where books are forbidden, of course, but not here. Not yet. Knock wood. What I’m trying to say is that a certain sentence of the book – a written sentence, a very powerful sentence – killed Flora.’<br><br>Louise was silent. After she died on All Soul’s Day, she refused to leave the bookstore and her ghost haunted the bookshelf aisles. The employees were understandably spooked by her presence and tried to find a way to put her soul to rest. This is not only an entertaining ghost story but it also is a deep look at Native American issues, the rise of Covid and the George Floyd tragedy. I admire Erdrich’s ambition but the novel feels a bit cluttered at times. I pre-ordered a signed copy of it directly from Birchbark Books, though, 'cause, well, 'cause. So now I have read it. I liked some things about it very much. The characters of Tookie, Pollux, and Hetta---marvelous. And a good set of secondary characters. The setting---Erdrich's own bookstore, a place I would love to visit. However, overall the story didn't work very well for me. Like some other readers, I felt the actual events of 2019-2021 felt patched in, and not complementary to Tookie's quest to understand why her former customer's ghost was hanging around after apparently being shocked to death by one sentence of an old manuscript. THAT story had great potential, but it was not realized. When the big reveal finally came, I was so bewildered I had to go back and read earlier sections, sometimes more than once, to get what we were meant to understand about Flora's past, and how it mattered to Tookie. I very much want to read THAT story, as it should have been written, without the extraneous social commentary. The two things did not fit together well. Erdrich should have done better. And her editor should have told her to. I felt I MUST have missed something, and that something was never provided. A reluctant 3 stars...the writing was good, as always. The plot seemed to meander as it went along and turned into a commentary on a number of current affairs. Although I recognize the significance of these events and the issues they raise, the story's plot seemed to veer off course. I could not help but wonder why it was all happening, even though it might have been my fault as a reader.<br><br>The story had a lot of strong themes of love and death, which made it quite an emotional ride for me. Tookie and her husband Pollux have a pure love that makes me smile warmly at times, but then Tookie has another unsettling encounter with the ghost that haunts her, and that chills me. But the virtues here so outweigh the flaws that to complain seems almost like ingratitude ... The Sentence is rife with passages that stop you cold, particularly when Erdrich...articulates those stray, blindsiding moments that made 2020 not only tragic but also so downright weird and unsettling ... There is something wonderfully comforting in the precise recollection of such furtive memories, like someone quietly opening a door onto a little slice of clarity ... The Sentence testifies repeatedly to the power books possess to heal us and, yes, to change our lives ... There are books, like this one, that while they may not resolve the mysteries of the human heart, go a long way toward shedding light on our predicaments.
