The name Malchijah, meaning "Yahweh is King" or "My King is Yah," reflects a theocentric worldview common among the Israelites. Below are the notable figures named Malchijah in the Bible:

1. Malchijah, the Son of Harim: This Malchijah is mentioned in the context of the post-exilic community. He was one of the Israelites who had married foreign women, contrary to the Law of Moses. In the book of Ezra, he is listed among those who pledged to put away their foreign wives to renew their covenant with God. Ezra 10:31 states, "From the descendants of Harim: Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon."

2. Malchijah, the Son of Rechab: This Malchijah is noted for his role in the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls under Nehemiah's leadership. He was responsible for repairing the Dung Gate, a critical part of the city's defenses. Nehemiah 3:14 records, "The Dung Gate was repaired by Malchijah son of Rechab, ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem. He rebuilt it and installed its doors, bolts, and bars."

3. Malchijah, the Priest: Another Malchijah served as a priest during the time of Nehemiah. He was among those who stood on the platform built for the Levites and helped lead the people in worship and confession. Nehemiah 8:4 mentions, "Ezra the scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for the occasion. To his right stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; to his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam."

4. Malchijah, the Father of Pashhur: This Malchijah is identified as the father of Pashhur, a priest who opposed the prophet Jeremiah. Jeremiah 21:1 states, "This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent Pashhur son of Malchijah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to him, asking."

5. Malchijah, the Goldsmith: In the book of Nehemiah, another Malchijah is mentioned as a goldsmith who participated in the repair of the wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah 3:31 notes, "Next to him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner."

The various individuals named Malchijah illustrate the diverse roles and responsibilities within the community of Israel, from religious leadership to civic duty. Each Malchijah contributed to the spiritual and physical restoration of the nation, reflecting the communal effort to uphold the covenant with God.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
MALCHIJAH
mal-ki'-ja (malkiyah, "Yah is king"; Melcheias, with variants):

(1) A Levite, descendant of Gershom, of those whom David set over the "service of sting" in the worship (1 Chronicles 6:40).

(2) The head of the 5th course of priests (1 Chronicles 24:9).

(3) One of the laymen who had taken "strange wives" during the exile (Ezra 10:25); the "Melchias" of 1 Esdras 9:26.

(4) Another of the same name (Ezra 10:25; two in same verse).
