It is a common expression in the Gospels, often introducing a significant truth or prophecy. The use of "truly" underscores the reliability of Jesus' words, reflecting His authority as the Son of God.
Jesus declared,
The act of declaring indicates a formal and authoritative statement. Jesus, as the Messiah, speaks with divine authority. This declaration is not merely a prediction but a prophetic statement that highlights His omniscience. It also sets the stage for the fulfillment of prophecy, demonstrating Jesus' foreknowledge of events.
“this very night,
The timing is crucial, as it emphasizes the immediacy of the prophecy's fulfillment. The events of this night are pivotal in the Passion narrative, leading to Jesus' arrest and crucifixion. The phrase highlights the urgency and the unfolding of God's redemptive plan within a specific timeframe.
before the rooster crows,
The mention of the rooster crowing is significant in the cultural and historical context. In ancient times, the rooster's crow was associated with the early morning hours, marking the transition from night to day. This detail provides a specific timeframe for Peter's denial, underscoring the accuracy of Jesus' prophecy. It also serves as a symbolic reminder of human frailty and the need for vigilance in faith.
you will deny Me three times.”
This prophecy directly addresses Peter, one of Jesus' closest disciples, highlighting the theme of human weakness and the struggle between faith and fear. The number three is often symbolic in Scripture, representing completeness or emphasis. Peter's threefold denial contrasts with his earlier bold declarations of loyalty, illustrating the challenges of discipleship and the reality of spiritual failure. This event also foreshadows Peter's eventual repentance and restoration, demonstrating God's grace and forgiveness.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus
The central figure of the New Testament, the Son of God, who is foretelling Peter's denial.

2. Peter
One of Jesus' closest disciples, known for his boldness and later leadership in the early church.
