It observes the development of the cult as part of the renovations of the church during the pontificate of Nicholas IV and the patronage of the Colonna family. It argues that it happened during the process of Franciscanization of the church and making the ideological axis between the Roman basilica and new papal basilica in Assisi, stressed also in their pictorial decorations – the mosaics in the apse in Rome, and the Life of Saint Francis in Assisi. It also studies the construction of Jerome’s Roman identity in correlation with the confirmation of Santa Maria Maggiore church as a “second Bethlehem” after the fall of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, reflecting upon the leading proponents of the idea, architectural setting, artistic production and hagiographical texts produced to uphold this idea. Il presente saggio analizza la formazione del culto di San Gerolamo a Roma presso la basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore al termine del XIII secolo e indaga lo sviluppo di questo culto in seno ai restauri della chiesa avvenuti durante il pontificato di Nicola IV e il patrocinio della famiglia Colonna. Si mette inoltre in evidenza come tale fenomeno sia avvenuto durante il processo di francescanizzazione della chiesa e la costruzione di un asse ideologico tra la basilica romana e la nuova basilica papale di Assisi, che è evidente anche nelle loro decorazioni pittoriche: i mosaici nell’abside di Roma e la vita di San Francesco ad Assisi. Scirocco E., 2018</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Il saggio indaga l’origine del mito dell’ “Umbria Santa”, alimentato dalla pittura purista e portato al suo apice a fine Ottocento, con l’Umbria che diviene luogo paradigmatico della compenetrazione trascendente fra spiritualità, arte e paesaggio naturale. A tal fine è risultato fondamentale l’indagare la percezione di Francesco e della Basilica di Assisi nel contesto europeo, prima nel periodo romantico poi nel corso del XIX secolo, nelle accezioni di “Alter Christus” o “Vir Catholicus”, oppure, all’opposto, di “Alter Orpheus”. Se soprattutto papa Pio VII e in misura minore Pio IX cercheranno di sfruttare al massimo l’immagine di Francesco “Vir Catholicus” fedele alleato dei pontefici (messaggio veicolato dalla decorazione neoclassica della nuova cripta della basilica), parallelamente gli scritti di Joseph Görres negli anni venti, apriranno ad una visione di Francesco fondata invece sul suo “speciale” rapporto con la natura. Un “Alter Orpheus”, prospettiva sottolineata da Ozanam, e declinata da pensatori e studiosi di varia formazione, come Von Hase, Taine, fino a Thode e Sabatier. Colta anche da pittori come Benouville e Nino Costa, e per tanti aspetti sentita ancora oggi. Sul piano storico-artistico, sono proprio gli scritti di Görres ad orientare in maniera decisiva il pensiero del barone Karl Friedrich Von Rumohr nell’ elaborazione teorica della “Scuola di pittura umbra” proposta nelle Italienische Forschungen uscite nel 1827. Agli esponenti della Scuola umbra, fra cui il Perugino, riconosceva la capacità di trasfigurare la realtà in chiave mistica, derivata proprio dal vivere in prossimità di Assisi, luogo consacrato a san Francesco, che ne poteva così condizionare i sentimenti.
