The "outer sanctuary" refers to the Holy Place, a significant area within the temple where priests performed daily rituals. This vision of the temple is part of a larger prophetic message concerning the restoration of Israel and the presence of God among His people. The temple's design reflects divine order and holiness, emphasizing the separation between the sacred and the profane.<p><b>and measured the side pillars to be six cubits wide on each side.</b><br>The act of measuring signifies God's precise plan and order. A cubit is an ancient measurement roughly equivalent to 18 inches or 45 centimeters, making the pillars about 9 feet or 2.7 meters wide. These measurements highlight the grandeur and stability of the temple structure, symbolizing strength and permanence. The pillars can also be seen as a type of Christ, representing His role as the cornerstone and support of the Church. There is an apparent discrepancy between this and the following verse, where "the sides of the door" are said to be "five cubits," and the latter agrees with the whole width of the house (5 + 10 + 5 = 20.) It is necessary, therefore, to understand the measurement of this verse as taken the other way--as we should say, the side walls of the doors were of the same thickness with the other walls--viz., six cubits. The words <span class= "ital">which was</span> are not in the original, and tend to give a false impression. <span class= "ital">Tabernacle</span> or <span class= "ital">tent</span> is the name by which the sanctuary was known before the erection of the Temple.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/ezekiel/41.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 1.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">The temple.</span> <span class="hebrew">הַהֵיכָל</span> frequently applied to the whole building (<a href="/2_kings/24-13.htm">2 Kings 24:13</a>; <a href="/2_chronicles/3-17.htm">2 Chronicles 3:17</a>; <a href="/jeremiah/1.htm">Jeremiah 1</a>:28; <a href="/haggai/2-15.htm">Haggai 2:15</a>; <a href="/zechariah/6-14.htm">Zechariah 6:14, 15</a>), is here used of the nave of the temple, the holy place, as distinguished from the holy of holies (comp. <a href="/1_kings/6-5.htm">1 Kings 6:5, 17</a>; <a href="/1_kings/7-50.htm">1 Kings 7:50</a>). Schroder alone of commentators holds by the extended meaning. The measuring began from the east wall of the holy place. <span class="cmt_word">The posts</span> (<span class="hebrew">אֵילִים</span>), as in <a href="/ezekiel/40-9.htm">Ezekiel 40:9</a>, the corner pillars on each side of the entrance, measured six cubits broad, whereas those of the porch measured only five (<a href="/ezekiel/40-48.htm">Ezekiel 40:48</a>). The phrase, <span class="cmt_word">The breadth of the tabernacle</span>; or, <span class="accented">the tent</span> (<span class="hebrew">הָאהֶל</span>), has occasioned difficulty. Hitzig, Ewald, and Smend propose to substitute for <span class="hebrew">הַאֹהָל</span> the word <span class="hebrew">הָאָיִל</span> ("post"), which might in itself be unobjectionable, only no such device is required to render the clause intelligible. It is sufficient to understand the phrase as signifying that the measurements noted had a special relation to the entire breadth of the temple, here styled "tabernacle," or "tent," to indicate the covered portion of the edifice, which, in this respect, and in respect of its being the place of meeting between Jehovah and Israel, resembled the ancient sanctuary of the wilderness. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Next he brought</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיְבִיאֵ֖נִי</span> <span class="translit">(way·ḇî·’ê·nî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_935.htm">Strong's 935: </a> </span><span class="str2">To come in, come, go in, go</span><br /><br /><span class="word">me into</span><br /><span class="heb">אֶל־</span> <span class="translit">(’el-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_413.htm">Strong's 413: </a> </span><span class="str2">Near, with, among, to</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the outer sanctuary</span><br /><span class="heb">הַהֵיכָ֑ל</span> <span class="translit">(ha·hê·ḵāl)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1964.htm">Strong's 1964: </a> </span><span class="str2">A large public building, palace, temple</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and measured</span><br /><span class="heb">וַיָּ֣מָד</span> <span class="translit">(way·yā·māḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4058.htm">Strong's 4058: </a> </span><span class="str2">To stretch, to measure, to be extended</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the side pillars</span><br /><span class="heb">הָאֵילִ֗ים</span> <span class="translit">(hā·’ê·lîm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article | Noun - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_352.htm">Strong's 352: </a> </span><span class="str2">Strength, strong, a chief, a ram, a pilaster, an oak, strong tree</span><br /><br /><span class="word">[to be] six</span><br /><span class="heb">שֵׁשׁ־</span> <span class="translit">(šêš-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Number - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8337.htm">Strong's 8337: </a> </span><span class="str2">Six (a cardinal number)</span><br /><br /><span class="word">cubits</span><br /><span class="heb">אַמּ֨וֹת</span> <span class="translit">(’am·mō·wṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_520.htm">Strong's 520: </a> </span><span class="str2">A mother, a cubit, a door-base</span><br /><br /><span class="word">wide</span><br /><span class="heb">רֹ֧חַב־</span> <span class="translit">(rō·ḥaḇ-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7341.htm">Strong's 7341: </a> </span><span class="str2">Breadth, width</span><br /><br /><span class="word">on each side.</span><br /><span class="heb">מִפּ֛וֹ</span> <span class="translit">(mip·pōw)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-m | Adverb<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6311.htm">Strong's 6311: </a> </span><span class="str2">This place, here</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/ezekiel/41-1.htm">Ezekiel 41:1 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/ezekiel/41-1.htm">OT Prophets: Ezekiel 41:1 He brought me to the temple (Ezek.
