With an exceptionally large community of scholars carrying out research in the history of philosophy and adjacent areas (e.g., intellectual history, history of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic thought, history of political theory, etc.) across multiple departments, the University of Notre Dame is one of the top locations for research and studies in this area in the United States. <a href="/people/faculty/therese-cory/">Therese Cory</a> is the director.</p> <h4><a href="https://maritain.nd.edu/">Maritain Center</a></h4> <p>With Maritain as its model, the Jacques Maritain Center aims to foster deep intellectual conversations and world-class research on the perennial questions of human existence, drawing special inspiration from the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas and Maritain’s own vision of “integral Christian humanism,” but also more broadly from the great traditions of human reasoning in conversation with faith. </p> <h4><a href="http://medieval.nd.edu/">Medieval Institute</a></h4> <p>The department's research and teaching in medieval philosophy are enriched by its participation in the <a href="http://medieval.nd.edu">Medieval Institute</a>, which brings together medievalists from thirteen Notre Dame departments--the largest group of medievalists in North America--and provides outstanding research resources through the Medieval Institute library. Events, activities, and courses organized by the Medieval Institute provide our medieval philosophy students with opportunities to study the social and political context for the development of medieval thought, to acquire language and manuscript study skills, and to get connected with visiting researchers from around the world. <a href="https://medieval.nd.edu/faculty/thomas-e-burman/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thomas Burman</a> is the director.</p> <h4><a href="https://ethics.nd.edu/?utm_campaign=redirect&utm_medium=web&utm_source=ndias.nd.edu">Institute for Ethics and the Common Good</a></h4> <p>The Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (ECG) facilitates interdisciplinary research in foundational and applied ethics, coordinates projects that cross departments and units, and supports ethics-related education and public engagement efforts. <a href="/people/faculty/meghan-sullivan/">Meghan Sullivan</a> is the director.</p> <h4><a href="http://reilly.nd.edu/">Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values</a></h4> <p><a href="http://reilly.nd.edu/">The Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values</a> is the administrative home for three academic programs: The graduate program in History and Philosophy of Science, the undergraduate minor in Science, Technology, and Values, and the undergraduate dual degree program in Arts and Letters and Engineering. In addition, the Reilly Center supports research activities, conferences, and publications. <a href="http://aristotle.nd.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a></p> <h4><a href="http://ancientphilosophy.nd.edu/">Workshop on Ancient Philosophy</a></h4> <p>This interdisciplinary Workshop focuses on the relation between Ancient Philosophy and a range of humanities disciplines. It covers all periods of Ancient Philosophy, and embraces all methodologies. The Workshop draws faculty and graduate students from a variety of departments and programs at Notre Dame, including Classics, History and Philosophy of Science, the Medieval Institute, Philosophy, Political Theory, the Program of Liberal Studies, and Theology.
