For three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and have not found any. Cut it down. Why should it continue to waste space in the ground?' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But he answered and said to him, 'Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig about it and put in manure, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And see if in fact it will bear fruit; but if not, after that you shall cut it down. ' "</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now He was teaching in one of the synagogues on one of the Sabbaths; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And lo, there was a woman who had been afflicted with a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years, and she was bent over and unable to straighten herself up. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And when He saw her, Jesus called her to Him and said to her, "Woman, you have been loosed from your infirmity." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then He laid His hands on her; and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, and said to the people, "There are six days in which men are obligated to work; therefore, during those days come and be healed, but not on the Sabbath day." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Therefore, the Lord answered him and said, "Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to drink? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And is it not just as necessary for this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound, lo, eighteen years, to be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?" <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And after He said these things, all those who opposed Him were ashamed; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were being done by Him.</p> <a name="18" id="18"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then He said, "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what shall I compare it? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>It is like a tiny mustard seed, which a man took and cast into his garden; and it grew and developed into a great tree, and the birds of heaven roosted in its branches."</p> <a name="20" id="20"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And again He said, "To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until all was leavened."</p> <a name="22" id="22"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now He was going through the cities and villages teaching, while making progress toward Jerusalem. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And one said to Him, "Lord, are those who are being saved few?" Then He said to them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>"Strive with your whole being to enter in through the narrow gate; for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in, but shall not be able. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Once the Master of the house has risen up and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside the door and knock, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us'; then shall He answer and say to you, 'I do not know you or where you are from. ' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And you shall begin to say, 'We ate and drank in Your presence, and You have taught in our streets. ' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And He shall say, 'I tell you, I do not know you or where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of unrighteousness. ' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are cast out. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then they shall come from the east and the west, and from the north and the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And behold, there are the last who shall be first, and the first who shall be last."</p> <a name="31" id="31"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>On the same day certain Pharisees came to Him, saying, "Go out and depart from this place because Herod desires to kill You." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And He said to them, "Go and say to that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and complete healings today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But it is necessary for Me to proceed today and tomorrow and the following day; because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem. ' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who have been sent to you; how often would I have gathered your children, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you refused! <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/13-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Behold, your house is left to you desolate. And truly I say to you, you shall not see Me at all until the time comes that you say, 'Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord.
