therefore the anger<MH639> of the LORD<MH3068> burned<MH2734> against the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Now Joshua<MH3091> sent<MH7971> men<MH376> from Jericho<MH3405> to Ai<MH5857>, which<MH834> is near<MH5973> Beth-aven<MH1007b>, east<MH6924a> of Bethel<MH1008>, and said<MH559> to them, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> and spy<MH7270> out<MH7270> the land<MH776>.” So the men<MH376> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and spied<MH7270> out<MH7270> Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then they returned<MH7725> to Joshua<MH3091> and said<MH559> to him, “Do not have all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> go<MH5927> up<MH5927>; have <i>only</i> about two or<MH176> three<MH7969> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> go<MH5927> up<MH5927> and attack<MH5221> Ai<MH5857>; do not trouble<MH3021> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> there<MH8033>, for they are few<MH4592>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So about three<MH7969> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> from the people<MH5971a> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> there<MH8033>, but they fled<MH5127> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>from the men<MH376> of Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And the men<MH376> of Ai<MH5857> struck<MH5221> and<MH5221> killed<MH5221> about thirty-six<MH7970, 8337a> of their men<MH376>, and pursued<MH7291> them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>from the gate<MH8179> as far<MH5704> as Shebarim<MH7671> and struck<MH5221> them on the mountainside<MH4174>; and the hearts<MH3824> of the people<MH5971a> melted<MH4549> and became<MH1961> like water<MH4325>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Joshua<MH3091> tore<MH7167> his clothes<MH8071> and fell<MH5307> to the ground<MH776> on his face<MH6440> before<MH6440> the ark<MH727> of the LORD<MH3068> until<MH5704> the evening<MH6153>, <i>both</i> he and the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478>; and they put<MH5927> dust<MH6083> on their heads<MH7218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And Joshua<MH3091> said<MH559>, “Oh<MH162>, Lord<MH136> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>GOD<MH3068>! Why<MH4100> did You ever<MH5674a> bring<MH5674a> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> across<MH5674a> the Jordan<MH3383>, <i>only</i> to hand<MH3027, 5414> us over<MH5414> to the Amorites<MH567>, to eliminate<MH6> us? If<MH3863> only<MH3863> we had been<MH2974> willing<MH2974> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to live<MH3427> beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>O<MH994a> Lord<MH136>, what<MH4100> can I say<MH559> since<MH310> Israel<MH3478> has turned<MH2015> <i>their</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>back<MH6203> before<MH6440> their enemies<MH340>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For the Canaanites<MH3669a> and all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776> will hear<MH8085> about it, and they will surround<MH5437> us and eliminate<MH3772> our name<MH8034> from the earth<MH776>. And what<MH4100> will You do<MH6213a> for Your great<MH1419> name<MH8034>?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “Stand<MH6965> up<MH6965>! Why<MH4100> is it that you have fallen<MH5307> on your face<MH6440>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Israel<MH3478> has sinned<MH2398>, and they have also<MH1571> violated<MH5674a> My covenant<MH1285> which<MH834> I commanded<MH6680> them. And they have even<MH1571> taken<MH3947> some<MH4480> of the things<MH2764a> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a>, and have both<MH1571> stolen<MH1589> and kept<MH3584> <i>it a</i> secret<MH3584>. Furthermore, they have also<MH1571> put<MH7760> <i>them</i> among their own things<MH3627>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Therefore the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> cannot<MH3201, 3808> stand<MH6965> against<MH6440> their enemies<MH340>; they turn<MH6437> <i>their</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>backs<MH6203> before<MH6440> their enemies<MH340>, because<MH3588> they have become<MH1961> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a>. I will not be with you anymore<MH3254> unless<MH518, 3808> you eliminate<MH8045> from your midst<MH7130> the things<MH2764a> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Stand<MH6965> up<MH6965>! Consecrate<MH6942> the people<MH5971a> and say<MH559>, ‘Consecrate<MH6942> yourselves for tomorrow<MH4279>, because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, has said<MH559> this<MH3541>: “There are things<MH2764a> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a> in your midst<MH7130>, Israel<MH3478>. You cannot<MH3201, 3808> stand<MH6965> against<MH6440> your enemies<MH340> until<MH5704> you have removed<MH5493> the designated<MH2764a> things<MH2764a> from your midst<MH7130>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So in the morning<MH1242> you shall come<MH7126> forward<MH7126> by your tribes<MH7626>. And it shall be that the tribe<MH7626> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> selects<MH3920> by<MH3920> lot<MH3920> shall come<MH7126> forward<MH7126> by families<MH4940>, and the family<MH4940> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> selects<MH3920> shall come<MH7126> forward<MH7126> by households<MH1004>, and the household<MH1004> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> selects<MH3920> shall come<MH7126> forward<MH7126> man<MH1397> by man<MH1397>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And it shall be that the one who is selected<MH3920> with the things<MH2764a> designated<MH2764a> for<MH2764a> destruction<MH2764a> shall be burned<MH8313> with fire<MH784>, he and all<MH3605> that belongs to him, because<MH3588> he has violated<MH5674a> the covenant<MH1285> of the LORD<MH3068>, and because<MH3588> he has committed<MH6213a> a disgraceful<MH5039> thing<MH5039> in Israel<MH3478>.’” <p class="hdg">The Sin of Achan</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and brought<MH7126> Israel<MH3478> forward<MH7126> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>tribes<MH7626>, and the tribe<MH7626> of Judah<MH3063> was selected<MH3920>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So he brought<MH7126> the family<MH4940> of Judah<MH3063> forward<MH7126>, and he selected<MH3920> the family<MH4940> of the Zerahites<MH2227>; then he brought<MH7126> the family<MH4940> of the Zerahites<MH2227> forward<MH7126> man<MH1397> by man<MH1397>, and Zabdi<MH2067> was selected<MH3920>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And he brought<MH7126> his household<MH1004> forward<MH7126> man<MH1397> by man<MH1397>; and Achan<MH5912>, son<MH1121> of Carmi<MH3756>, son<MH1121> of Zabdi<MH2067>, son<MH1121> of Zerah<MH2226>, from the tribe<MH4294> of Judah<MH3063>, was selected<MH3920>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then Joshua<MH3091> said<MH559> to Achan<MH5912>, “My son<MH1121>, I implore<MH4994> you, give<MH7760> glory<MH3519b> to the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, and give<MH5414> praise<MH8426> to Him; and tell<MH5046> me now<MH4994> what<MH4100> you have done<MH6213a>. Do not hide<MH3582> it from me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So Achan<MH5912> answered<MH6030a> Joshua<MH3091> and said<MH559>, “Truly<MH546>, I have sinned<MH2398> against the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>this<MH2088> is what<MH2088> I did<MH6213a>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>when I saw<MH7200> among the spoils<MH7998> a beautiful<MH2896a> robe<MH155> from Shinar<MH8152>, two hundred<MH3967> shekels<MH8255> of silver<MH3701>, and a bar<MH3956> of gold<MH2091> fifty<MH2572> shekels<MH8255> in weight<MH4948>, then I wanted<MH2530> them and took<MH3947> them; and behold<MH2009>, they are hidden<MH2934> in the ground<MH776> inside<MH8432> my tent<MH168>, with the silver<MH3701> underneath<MH8478>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397>, and they ran<MH7323> to the tent<MH168>; and behold<MH2009>, it was hidden<MH2934> in his tent<MH168> with the silver<MH3701> underneath<MH8478> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So they took<MH3947> them from inside<MH8432> the tent<MH168> and brought<MH935> them to Joshua<MH3091> and to all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>; and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>laid<MH3332> them out<MH3332> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Joshua<MH3091>, and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> with him, took<MH3947> Achan<MH5912> the son<MH1121> of Zerah<MH2226>, the silver<MH3701>, the robe<MH155>, the bar<MH3956> of gold<MH2091>, his sons<MH1121>, his daughters<MH1323>, his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>oxen<MH7794>, his donkeys<MH2543>, his sheep<MH6629>, his tent<MH168>, and all<MH3605> that belonged to him; and they brought<MH5927> them up<MH5927> to the Valley<MH6010> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Achor<MH5911>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And Joshua<MH3091> said<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> have you brought<MH5916> disaster<MH5916> on<MH5916> us? The LORD<MH3068> will bring<MH5916> disaster<MH5916> on<MH5916> you this<MH2088> day<MH3117>.” And all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> stoned<MH7275> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>them with stones<MH68>; and they burned<MH8313> them with fire<MH784> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>after they had stoned<MH5619> them with stones<MH68>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/7-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then they erected<MH6965> over<MH5921> him a large<MH1419> heap<MH1530> of stones<MH68> <i>that stands</i> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, and the LORD<MH3068> turned<MH7725> from the fierceness<MH2740> of His anger<MH639>.
