It reflects Psalm 22:8, a messianic psalm that foreshadows the suffering of Christ. The religious leaders and onlookers challenge Jesus' trust, echoing the taunts of the psalm, which underscores the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy in the events of the crucifixion. This trust in God is central to Jesus' mission and identity, as He consistently demonstrated reliance on the Father throughout His ministry.
Let God deliver Him now if He wants Him.
This statement is a direct challenge to the divine relationship between Jesus and God the Father. It reflects a misunderstanding of Jesus' mission, which was not to avoid suffering but to fulfill the redemptive plan through His death. The demand for deliverance mirrors the temptation Jesus faced in the wilderness (Matthew 4:3-6), where Satan also challenged Him to prove His divine sonship. The mockers' words reveal their lack of faith and understanding of God's plan for salvation through the cross.
For He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
This phrase refers to Jesus' claim of divine sonship, a central tenet of His identity and a key reason for the religious leaders' opposition to Him. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus affirms His unique relationship with the Father (e.g., John 10:36), which was considered blasphemous by the Jewish authorities. The title "Son of God" signifies His divine nature and messianic role, fulfilling prophecies such as those in Isaiah 9:6 and Psalm 2:7. The mockery of this claim at the crucifixion highlights the irony that, in their derision, the onlookers were unwittingly affirming the truth of Jesus' identity.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
Central figure in this passage, crucified and mocked by onlookers. But (1) we must remember that they, ignoring the idea of a suffering Christ, would not look on the Psalm as Messianic at all, and (2) that their very familiarity with the words of the Psalm would naturally bring its phraseology to their lips when occasion called for it. Only they would persuade themselves that they were right in using it, while David's enemies were wrong.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 43. - He trusted in (ἐπὶ, on) God. These scoffers cite a passage from Psalm 22:8, "He trusted unto the Lord that he would deliver him; let him deliver him, seeing he delighteth in him" (Hebrew); or, according to the Septuagint, "He hoped in the Lord; let him deliver him, let him save him, because he desires (θέλει) him." Let him deliver him now, if he will have him (εἰ θέλει). Θέλω is used in the Septuagint in the sense of "I love," "I wish for" (see Deuteronomy 21:14; Psalm 17:19; 40:11). But the Vulgate, by omitting the first αὐτόν, possibly takes the verb in the usual sense, Liberet nunc, si vult, eum. The Sinaitic and Vatican manuscripts and others support this reading, which is followed now by Tischendorf, and Westcott and Hort, so that the clause will run, Let him now, if he will, deliver him. But the Received Text and the Authorized Version are in closer agree ment with the original language of the psalm. For he said, I am the Son of God. Insultingly they allude to his own assertions concerning his Divine nature, implying that, were he such as he pretended to be, he would not now be dying on the shameful cross. There are wonderful coincidences in thought and language between this passage and one in the Book of Wisdom (2:13-20), which speaks of the oppression of the righteous, e.g. "He professeth to have the knowledge of God; and he calleth himself the child of the Lord.... Let us see if his words be true; and let us prove what shall happen in the end of him. For if the just man be the Son of God, he will help him, and deliver him from the hand of his enemies." The similarity of expression is to be attributed to the typical nature of the treatment of Christ, which the writer of Wisdom, with remarkable insight, thus forcibly delineated.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
He trusts
πέποιθεν (pepoithen)
Verb - Perfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular
Strong's 3982: A primary verb; to convince; by analogy, to pacify or conciliate; reflexively or passively, to assent, to rely.

in
ἐπὶ (epi)
Preposition
Strong's 1909: On, to, against, on the basis of, at.

God.
Θεόν (Theon)
Noun - Accusative Masculine Singular
Strong's 2316: A deity, especially the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very.

Let [God] deliver
ῥυσάσθω (rhysasthō)
Verb - Aorist Imperative Middle - 3rd Person Singular
Strong's 4506: To rescue, deliver (from danger or destruction).

Him
αὐτόν (auton)
Personal / Possessive Pronoun - Accusative Masculine 3rd Person Singular
Strong's 846: He, she, it, they, them, same.
