experimentation, development and resistance. In the UK, this is especially true in the post-second world war era of productivist food regimes, characterised by moves to intensification. The technologies that have developed have variously aimed to increase yields, automate previously manual tasks, and create new forms of life. This review focuses on the relationships between agricultural technologies and rural lives. While there has been considerable media emphasis on the material modification, and creation, of new rural lives through emerging genetic technologies, the review highlights the role of technologies in co-producing new rural subjectivities. It does this through exploring relationships between agricultural technologies and gender, changing approaches to understanding and intervening in animal lives, and how automation shifts responsibility for productive work on farms. In each of these instances, even ostensibly mundane technologies can significantly affect what it is to be a farmer, a farm advisor or a farm animal. However, the review cautions against technological determinism, drawing on recent work from Science and Technology Studies to show that technologies do not simply reconfigure lives but are themselves transformed by the actors and activities with which they are connected. The project came about following an invitation from John Sweet, a retired farmer and active community worker in the Queensland town of Mackay. Sweet’s hunch was that the involvement of artists in a complex environmental management problem might help to catalyse positive transformations in the sugar cane industry, which is often accused of polluting the pristine waters of the Great Barrier Reef with agricultural run-off. This chapter is based on some of the early field research for Sugar vs the Reef? and my task is to present the inventiveness of three change agents: two human and one non-human. The first is Simon Mattsson, a sugar cane farmer in Mackay, and a founder of Central Queensland Soil Health Systems (CQSHS). The second is Allan Yeomans, director of the Yeomans Plow Company on the Gold Coast and inventor of the Yeomans Carbon Still: a device for measuring carbon sequestration in soil. The third change agent has been around for millennia: the humble plant—specifically grass—and the complex soil community of which grasses are an integral member. While presenting the inventiveness of these three change agents together here, I also want to point to some of the factors that have thus far inhibited the broader uptake of their inventions. This chapter provides an account of how new plant variation emerges and eventually becomes a new variety. While a reader of English might best recognize this as the work of “plant breeding,” with all its implications of mastery and control, what I relay here would be poorly captured by that term. Instead, I chronicle a wide range of beings-and-doings carried out by humans, God, spirits, and plants, as described by rice farmers in a predominantly Mandinka-speaking district of The Gambia between 2010 and 2012. In transmitting these accounts, I reflect on the different ways in which labour is rendered visible and invisible in stories about who works and how work proceeds in the “breeding” of new crop varieties. I thus weave farmers’ accounts with three others: the legacies of colonial agricultural science, research on farmers-as-breeders, and work attentive to more-than-human agency. Different processes, modes, and degrees of invisibility run through each of these accounts (my own included)—erasure, elision, and translation, to name a few. It draws upon personal observation, ethnography in a real-world setting and related contexts, in which the authors have carried out research. The research work presented is novel in that we took a stance in which we asked the stakeholders to co-realise the methods we adopted in order that they might participate in the research with us. However, this was not necessarily the most effective way of working with the communities. We also discuss the problems associated with working with disparate communities of interest and working with people on an individual/familial basis as opposed to traditional participatory workshop-style methods. But what are the theoretical moorings of this far-reaching new enterprise? First, the article offers a brief review of some potential foundations for studies of improvisation. The hypothesis that humans possess neurons for mirrored interaction because they have evolved as social animals is arguably as plausible as the notion that interactive, social behaviour is a product of a neural architecture primed for interactive cognition. Durkheim responded to a similar unresolved set of arguments about brains and cognition at the end of nineteenth century by taking his well-known late ethnographic turn (towards Australia). This takes us to the second part of the article. The ethnography of performance retains its value to nourish our understanding of larger questions regarding properties of human sociality. Specifically, the article seeks to suggest that a focus on the ritual shaping of embodied actions is crucial to understand and address the emergence of a range of competing "styles of thought." An example helps show that the "bubbles" and "echo chambers" of opinion, of which contemporary political commentators complain, are not (as supposed) products of the internet and social media, but rooted in more fundamental differences in social ordering reinforced by variations in practical and ritual performance. The article seeks to bring out the persistent "deafness" of development agencies to connections between shifting cultivation and social practices of marriage and death in a West African farming community. Calls by development agencies to abandon shifting cultivation have no effect. Approaching agrarian intervention via joint improvisation might help two circular arguments sustained by institutional differences to connect. La etnografía del performance conserva su valor para alimentar nuestro entendimiento de mayores preguntas acerca de las propiedades de la sociabilidad humana. Específicamente, este artículo busca sugerir que un enfoque en la estructuración ritual de acciones incorporadas, es crucial para entender y referir la emergencia de una gama de “estilos de pensamiento” que compiten entre ellos. Un ejemplo ayuda a demostrar que las “burbujas” y “cámaras de eco” de opinión, de las que los actuales analistas políticos se quejan, no son (como se supone) productos de Internet y redes sociales, sino que están arraigados a diferencias más fundamentales en el orden social que está reforzado por las variaciones en performance práctico y ritual. El artículo busca poner al descubierto la persistente “sordera” de las agencias de desarrollo respecto a las conexiones entre la rotación de cultivos y prácticas sociales de matrimonio y la muerte, en una comunidad agrícola del oeste de África. El llamado de la agencia de desarrollo a dejar la rotación de cultivo no ha tenido efecto.
