Authority Questioned</p><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>On one<MG1520> of the days<MG2250> while He was teaching<MG1321> the people<MG2992> in the temple<MG2413> and preaching<MG2097> the gospel<MG2097>, the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the scribes<MG1122> with the elders<MG4245> confronted<MG2186> <i>Him,</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>and they declared<MG3004>, saying<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;Tell<MG3004> us by what<MG4169> authority<MG1849> You are doing<MG4160> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>, or<MG2228> who<MG5101> is the one who gave<MG1325> You this<MG3778> authority<MG1849>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But He replied<MG611, 3004> to them, &#8220;I will also<MG2532> ask<MG2065> you a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>question<MG3056>, and you tell<MG3004> Me: <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Was the baptism<MG908> of John<MG2491> from heaven<MG3772> or<MG2228> from men<MG444>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>They discussed<MG4817> among<MG4314> themselves<MG1438>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;If<MG1437> we say<MG3004>, &#8216;From heaven<MG3772>,&#8217; He will say<MG3004>, &#8216;Why<MG1223, 5101> did you not believe<MG4100> him?&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But if<MG1437> we say<MG3004>, &#8216;From men<MG444>,&#8217; all<MG537a> the people<MG2992> will stone<MG2642> us to<MG2642> death<MG2642>, since<MG1063> they are convinced<MG3982> that John<MG2491> was a prophet<MG4396>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> they answered<MG611> that they did not know<MG3609a> where<MG4159> <i>it came</i> from<MG4159>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Neither<MG3761> am I telling<MG3004> you by what<MG4169> authority<MG1849> I do<MG4160> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Parable of the Vine-growers</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But He began<MG757> to tell<MG3004> the people<MG2992> this<MG3778> parable<MG3850b>: &#8220;A man<MG444> planted<MG5452> a vineyard<MG290> and leased<MG1554> it to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>vine-growers<MG1092>, and went<MG589> on<MG589> a<MG589> journey<MG589> for a long<MG2425> time<MG5550>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>At <i>the harvest</i> time<MG2540> he sent<MG649> a slave<MG1401> to the vine-growers<MG1092>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> they would give<MG1325> him <i>his share</i> of the produce<MG2590> of the vineyard<MG290>; but the vine-growers<MG1092> beat<MG1194> him and sent<MG1821> him away<MG1821> empty-handed<MG2756>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And he proceeded<MG4369> to send<MG3992> another<MG2087> slave<MG1401>; but they beat<MG1194> him also<MG2548> and treated<MG818> him shamefully<MG818>, and sent<MG1821> him away<MG1821> empty-handed<MG2756>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And he proceeded<MG4369> to send<MG3992> a third<MG5154>; but this<MG3778> one<MG3778> too<MG2532> they wounded<MG5135> and threw<MG1544b> out<MG1544b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>owner<MG2962> of the vineyard<MG290> said<MG3004>, &#8216;What<MG5101> am I to do<MG4160>? I will send<MG3992> my beloved<MG27> son<MG5207>; perhaps<MG2481> they will respect<MG1788> him.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But when the vine-growers<MG1092> saw<MG3708> him, they discussed<MG1260> with one<MG240> another<MG240>, saying<MG3004>, &#8216;This<MG3778> is the heir<MG2818>; let&#8217;s kill<MG615> him so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the inheritance<MG2817> will be ours<MG1473>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> they threw<MG1544b> him out<MG1544b> of the vineyard<MG290> and killed<MG615> him. What<MG5101>, then<MG3767>, will the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>owner<MG2962> of the vineyard<MG290> do<MG4160> to them? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>He will come<MG2064> and put<MG622> these<MG3778> vine-growers<MG1092> to<MG622> death<MG622>, and will give<MG1325> the vineyard<MG290> to others<MG243>.&#8221; However, when<MG1161> they heard<MG191> <i>this,</i> they said<MG3004>, &#8220;May it never<MG3361> happen<MG3361>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Jesus looked<MG1689> at<MG1689> them and said<MG3004>, &#8220;Then<MG3767> what<MG5101> is this<MG3778> <i>statement</i> that has been written<MG1125>: <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;A STONE<MG3037> WHICH<MG3739> THE BUILDERS<MG3618> REJECTED<MG593>, <t><p class="indent1">THIS<MG3778> HAS BECOME<MG1096> THE <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>CHIEF<MG2776> CORNERSTONE<MG1137>&#8217;? <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Everyone<MG3956> who falls<MG4098> on that stone<MG3037> will be broken<MG4917> to<MG4917> pieces<MG4917>; but on whomever<MG3739, 302> it falls<MG4098>, it will crush<MG3039> him.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Paying Taxes to Caesar</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The scribes<MG1122> and the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> tried<MG2212> to lay<MG1911> hands<MG5495> on Him that very<MG846> hour<MG5610>, and <i>yet</i> they feared<MG5399> the people<MG2992>; for they were aware<MG1097> that He had spoken<MG3004> this<MG3778> parable<MG3850b> against<MG4314> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> they watched<MG3906> Him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>closely<MG3906>, and sent<MG649> spies<MG1455> who pretended<MG5271> to be righteous<MG1342>, in<MG2443> order<MG2443> that they might catch<MG1949> Him in <i>some</i> statement<MG3056>, so<MG5620> that<MG5620> they <i>could</i> hand<MG3860> Him over<MG3860> to the jurisdiction<MG746> and authority<MG1849> of the governor<MG2232>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And <i>the spies</i> questioned<MG1905> Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Teacher<MG1320>, we know<MG3609a> that You speak<MG3004> and teach<MG1321> correctly<MG3723>, and You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>are not partial<MG2983, 4383> to anyone, but You teach<MG1321> the way<MG3598> of God<MG2316> on the basis<MG1909> of truth<MG225>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Is it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>permissible<MG1832> for us to pay<MG1325> taxes<MG5411> to Caesar<MG2541>, or<MG2228> not?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But He saw<MG2657> through<MG2657> their trickery<MG3834> and said<MG3004> to them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>&#8220;Show<MG1166> Me a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>denarius<MG1220>. Whose<MG5101> image<MG1504> and inscription<MG1923> does it have<MG2192>?&#8221; They said<MG3004>, &#8220;Caesar&#8217;s<MG2541>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Then<MG5106> pay<MG591> to Caesar<MG2541> the things that are Caesar&#8217;s<MG2541>, and to God<MG2316> the things that are God&#8217;s<MG2316>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And they were unable<MG3756, 2480> to catch<MG1949> Him in a statement<MG4487> in<MG1726> the<MG1726> presence<MG1726> of the people<MG2992>; and they were<MG2296> amazed<MG2296> at His answer<MG612>, and said<MG4601> nothing<MG4601>. <p class="hdg">Is There a Resurrection?</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> some<MG5100> of the Sadducees<MG4523> (who maintain<MG483> that there is no<MG3361> resurrection<MG386>) came<MG4334> to Him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and they questioned<MG1905> Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Teacher<MG1320>, Moses<MG3475> wrote<MG1125> for us that if<MG1437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>a man&#8217;s<MG5100> brother<MG80> dies<MG599>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>leaving<MG2192> a wife<MG1135>, and he is childless<MG815>, that his brother<MG80> is to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>marry<MG2983> the wife<MG1135> and raise<MG1817> up<MG1817> children<MG4690> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>for his brother<MG80>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So<MG3767> then<MG3767>, there were seven<MG2033> brothers<MG80>; and the first<MG4413> took<MG2983> a wife<MG1135> and died<MG599> childless<MG815>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>and the second<MG1208> <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>and the third<MG5154> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>married<MG2983> her; and in the same<MG5615> way<MG5615> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>all<MG3588> seven<MG2033> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>died<MG599>, leaving<MG2641> no<MG3756> children<MG5043>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Finally<MG5305> the woman<MG1135> also<MG2532> died<MG599>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767>, in the resurrection<MG386>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>which<MG5101> one&#8217;s<MG846> wife<MG1135> does the woman become<MG1096>? For <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>all<MG3588> seven<MG2033> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>married<MG2192, 1135> her.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;The sons<MG5207> of this<MG3778> age<MG165> marry<MG1060> and <i>the women</i> are given<MG1061b> in<MG1061b> marriage<MG1061b>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>but those<MG3588> who are considered<MG2661> worthy<MG2661> to attain<MG5177> to that age<MG165> and the resurrection<MG386> from the dead<MG3498>, neither<MG3777> marry<MG1060> nor<MG3777> are given<MG1061a> in<MG1061a> marriage<MG1061a>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>for they cannot<MG1410, 3761> even<MG3761> die<MG599> anymore<MG2089>, for they are like<MG2465> angels<MG2465>, and are sons<MG5207> of God<MG2316>, being<MG1510> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>sons<MG5207> of the resurrection<MG386>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But <i>as for</i> the<MG3754> fact<MG3754> that<MG3754> the dead<MG3498> are raised<MG1453>, even<MG2532> Moses<MG3475> revealed<MG3377> <i>this</i> in the <i>passage about the burning</i> bush<MG942>, where<MG5613> he calls<MG3004> the Lord<MG2962> THE GOD<MG2316> OF ABRAHAM<MG11>, THE GOD<MG2316> OF ISAAC<MG2464>, AND THE GOD<MG2316> OF JACOB<MG2384>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> He is not the God<MG2316> of the dead<MG3498>, but of the living<MG2198>; for all<MG3956> live<MG2198> to Him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Some<MG5100> of the scribes<MG1122> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004>, &#8220;Teacher<MG1320>, You have spoken<MG3004> well<MG2573>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>For they did not have<MG5111> the courage<MG5111> to question<MG1905> Him any<MG3765> longer<MG3765> about anything<MG3762>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>But He said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;How<MG4459> <i>is it that</i> they say<MG3004> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>Christ<MG5547> is David&#8217;s<MG1160b> son<MG5207>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>For David<MG1160b> himself<MG846> says<MG3004> in the book<MG976> of Psalms<MG5568>, <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;THE LORD<MG2962> SAID<MG3004> TO MY LORD<MG2962>, <t><p class="indent1">&#8220;SIT<MG2521> AT MY RIGHT<MG1188> HAND<MG1188>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>UNTIL<MG2193> I MAKE<MG5087> YOUR ENEMIES<MG2190> A FOOTSTOOL<MG5286> FOR YOUR FEET<MG4228>.&#8221;&#8217; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> David<MG1160b> calls<MG2564> Him &#8216;Lord<MG2962>,&#8217; and <i>so</i> how<MG4459> is He his son<MG5207>?&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And while all<MG3956> the people<MG2992> were listening<MG191>, He said<MG3004> to the disciples<MG3101>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>&#8220;Beware<MG4337> of the scribes<MG1122>, who like<MG2309> to walk<MG4043> around<MG4043> in long<MG4749> robes<MG4749>, and love<MG5368> personal<MG783> greetings<MG783> in the marketplaces<MG58>, and chief<MG4410> seats<MG4410> in the synagogues<MG4864> and places<MG4411> of<MG4411> honor<MG4411> at banquets<MG1173>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/20-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>who<MG3739> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>devour<MG2719> widows&#8217;<MG5503> houses<MG3614>, and for appearance&#8217;s<MG4392> sake<MG4392> offer<MG4336> long<MG3117> prayers<MG4336>.
