The methodological basis of the research is the use of analytical services of the Internet for studying the Russians' online activity. As an empirical basis, the work employs two Internet studies conducted by the authors in 2018 and 2019, and it analyzes the interest of the Runet [Russian network] users in the online form of knowledge acquisition. In recent years, the growth of interest in distance learning has been noted with individual seasonal drops. There is a trend to get higher education with state-recognized degrees and formally awarded qualifications. In Russia, schoolchildren of grades 10-11 extensively use online social networks to improve the efficiency of training in mathematics. They prefer Internet communities adhering to the traditional teaching principles. A combination of educational and entertaining content attracts a larger quantity of users. Data were collected in 2012-2014 using a specific question-naire from 4848 distance students of Modern University for the Humanities (Russia). The analysis of data reveals the average age of distance students (26-35) tends of increasing, which is obviously re-lated to the demographic trends of the population of Russia. The proportion of married and having children of students also grows (more than 50%). The proportions of students by sex is approximate-ly equal. The most students (more than 70%) have a full time job. About a quarter of employed stu-dents have jobs in the army, police, fire or emergency services. The number of state and municipal employees is also increased. The living location for first-year students in 2012 was roughly equal be-tween big sities, medium-sized towns and small settlements. But in recent years there has been de-cline the number of students from smaller communities (village, etc.). Parents of enrolled students are most often workers, military or police personnel, engineers, trade staff, state or municipal em-ployees, staff in education or medicine. Only a fifth of the mothers and one-third of fathers have a college or university degree. So, the parents of students of distance education have lower educational status than their parents full-time students. This study provides evidence that distance education is important for social mobility. The proportion of students whose families have incomes higher than the average are increased, perhaps because distance education (which is paid) has become less acces-sible for low-income families. The study showed the educational intentions of students: about 48% wish to have a bachelor&#39;s degree, about 29% want to achieve a master&#39;s degree (also mentioned other levels of qualification). About 80% of students after graduation intend to work according to the ac-quired education. The results are discussed in comparison to previous studies. At the same time, the development of this model of education generates new problems: organization of the study process and information security. Distance learning allows solving a problem of accessibility of higher education in case of social issues, working hours, etc. Therefore, distance education is of major importance in increasing the learning efficiency. The Latvian model of distance education is passing the stage of formation and approbation in the market of educational services. However, the creation of system of distance education should not be the final step for higher education institutions as such; furthermore, this process would not be developed without students. This paper outlines benchmarking studies of the current online learning trends. We have demonstrated the weak points in organizing and conducting online classes, identified the shortcomings of excessive digitalization of education, and suggested several problem-solving alternatives. We strongly believe that the appropriate arrangement of distance learning is impossible without getting feedback from all participants of the learning process. Our study represents the benefits and challenges of distance learning noticed by students. The given study is the initial stage of the multi-level research. To receive a qualitative and valid result, we developed a questionnaire with cross-sectional questions, which allowed analysing each question from multiple perspectives, namely we were interested in students&#39; opinion on the following issues: transition to entirely distance learning; the role of a teacher in distance learning; the influence of distance learning format on the education quality (perception, understanding, learning, and mastering the material); difficulties and challenges. After examining the data obtained, we have managed to single out the following aspects: the most advisable forms of ICT use in the learning organization; balance between learning workload and communication between teacher and student; coordination within the institution to avoid students&#39; overload, which leads to demotivation and physical fatigue. The findings of this study indicate weak aspects in the organization and use of ICT in education. Based on these findings, we offered strategies for successful distance and blended learning. Beside everything, new communication technologies like computers and the Internet lead also the concept of distance education to cyber space. New information and communication technologies may both function as a helper for education, and also as a whole source that provide education under the name of &#39;distance education&#39;. Emphasizing the fact that most of the literature about this subject handles &quot;distance education&quot; as a full education type provided mainly through online systems, this article aims to understand the feelings and attitudes of university students who originally apply for a classroom-based education, and take some of their courses through online distance education. By taking the students of Yalova University as sample, and by developing a new scale, a survey form consisting of 23 items in total, including two open ended questions, are filled by 255 participants. Eventually, it is found that attitudes of university students that choose classroom-based education towards online distance education courses are quite negative. The results demonstrate the significance of factors such as the need for communicating with an instructor, or the need for an interactive and interesting content design when there is no human (student-teacher) interaction in online distance education. The need for distance education, either undergraduate or graduate programs, has emerged due to several circumstances. It was the COVID pandemic, busy everyday schedules, economic issues and the geographical distribution of students and universities that boosted the distance education approach. In this new era for teaching and learning opportunities, it was necessary to record the attributes, distance education opinions, teaching and learning preferences of the students. This investigation focused not only on the students but also on the fellow students and their instructors. In order to succeed in recording all these data, a structured questionnaire survey has been designed and implemented. Fifty-one students from Serbian Universities responded and their answers were statistically analyzed. Female participants were the majority with almost 55% of the sample, and the age of most of the participants ranged among 20 to 22 years old. Almost all the participants are single and at the moment of the questionnaire survey studied in undergraduate programs. Students attending distance education programs prefer smaller groups of students (&lt;30) and the like listening to the course material and taking notes. They are particularly fond of experimenting and focusing on one thing at a given time. It is very interesting that they particularly like to work independently on projects.
