This was again due to the rebellious nature of the zamindars who were "continually in arms".<a href="#cite_note-Marshall-9"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a> </p> <div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Relations_with_the_British">Relations with the British</h2><span class="mw-editsection"><span class="mw-editsection-bracket">[</span><a href="/w/index.php?title=Zamindars_of_Bihar&amp;action=edit&amp;section=2" title="Edit section: Relations with the British"><span>edit</span></a><span class="mw-editsection-bracket">]</span></span></div> <style data-mw-deduplicate="TemplateStyles:r1236090951">.mw-parser-output .hatnote{font-style:italic}.mw-parser-output div.hatnote{padding-left:1.6em;margin-bottom:0.5em}.mw-parser-output .hatnote i{font-style:normal}.mw-parser-output .hatnote+link+.hatnote{margin-top:-0.5em}@media print{body.ns-0 .mw-parser-output .hatnote{display:none!important}}</style><div role="note" class="hatnote navigation-not-searchable">See also: <a href="/wiki/1781_revolt_in_Bihar" title="1781 revolt in Bihar">1781 revolt in Bihar</a></div> <p>After the collapse of the Mughals, the <a href="/wiki/British_East_India_Company" class="mw-redirect" title="British East India Company">British East India Company</a> held sway over much of <a href="/wiki/South_Asia" title="South Asia">South Asia</a>.<a href="#cite_note-Marshall2006-10"><span class="cite-bracket">&#91;</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">&#93;</span></a> The colonial power wanted the revenue system "to be simple in its principle and uniform in its operation," but the <a href="/wiki/Zamindar" title="Zamindar">zamindari system</a> was so ingrained that even the early British rulers, from the grant of <a href="/wiki/Dewan" title="Dewan">Dewani</a> (1765) to the <a href="/wiki/Permanent_Settlement" title="Permanent Settlement">Permanent Settlement</a> (1793), dared not challenge it fundamentally.
