Born 28 November 1909, in Dublin; died 28 April 1992, in Madrid. Painter (including gouache/mixed media), watercolourist, pastellist, lithographer. Religious subjects, figures, nudes, portraits, landscapes, animals. School of London. Francis Bacon’s father was an English racehorse trainer. He spent part of his childhood with his maternal grandmother in Ireland. He suffered from asthma as a child and had no conventional schooling. From 1927 to 1928, he travelled to Berlin, where he stayed for two months, then went to Paris, where he occasionally secured commissions for interior decoration. He visited a Picasso exhibition at the Paul Rosenberg Gallery, which greatly impressed him and inspired him to start making drawings and watercolours. In 1929, he returned to London, exhibited furniture and rugs made from his own designs (although influenced by the tapestry designer and painter Jean Lurçat) in his Queensbury Mews studio, and began to paint in oils, producing some landscapes of dead trees and receiving guidance from the painter Roy de Maistre. In 1930, he arranged a joint exhibition in his studio with De Maistre, showing furniture (mainly in an Art Deco style) as well as paintings and gouaches. It must have been fairly successful, since the journal The Studio dedicated an article to it, reproducing his designs for rugs and tubular furniture.

In 1931, Bacon gradually abandoned his work as an interior decorator in order to devote himself to painting. He staged his first small solo exhibition of paintings in February 1934 at the Transition Gallery, Sunderland House, London, which received little critical or public acclaim. In 1936, he submitted some work to the International Surrealist Exhibition. It was rejected on the grounds of not being ‘sufficiently surreal’. For around 15 years Bacon explored different possibilities in terms of contemporary painting, among them Picasso’s simultaneity (the representation of faces from different angles in the same image) and Surrealism (‘chance’ accumulations of cages, battered armchairs, bidets, mirrors, and monstrous unidentifiable creatures). From 1933 onwards, including in his ‘mature’ phase, Bacon returned frequently to the theme of the Crucifixion in a triptych, which attracted the attention of the art critic Herbert Read. In 1937, he exhibited three paintings in the important group exhibition Young British Painters held at Agnews, London. Others taking part in this exhibition included Graham Sutherland, John Piper, and Victor Pasmore, who at the time already represented the cutting edge in terms of British painting. During World War II, declared unfit for military service, Bacon was assigned to Civil Defence (ARP), which left him little opportunity to paint.

In 1944, Bacon decided to dedicate himself entirely to painting. Around this time he destroyed nearly all his earlier work, with the exception of 10 to 15 paintings, including the very recently painted Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, now in Tate Britain, which Bacon himself considered to be his first mature work. In 1945, he took part in an exhibition at the Lefevre Galleries, which featured Sutherland, Henry Moore, and several others. Bacon himself exhibited Three Studies for a Crucifixion and Figures in a Landscape, which are considered his first mature works.

Bacon quickly became one of the most controversial painters in postwar England. Between 1946 and 1950, he lived mainly in Monte Carlo, taught briefly at the Royal College of Art as deputy for John Minton, and travelled to South Africa to visit his mother. In 1948, Alfred H. Barr purchased Painting 1946 for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. That same year, Bacon began painting his series Heads and began to use the unprimed side of the canvas. In 1949, he held a solo exhibition at the Hanover Gallery in London, which became his agent for the next 10 years, during which time he took part in a great many collective exhibitions. An important solo exhibition took place in London in 1949, showing the first encounters with themes that would be developed throughout his future work: wailing heads in the style of photographic extracts from the film Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein, studies of popes after Diego Velázquez’ Portrait of Pope Innocent X or after the photographs of Pope Pius XII, figures in glass cages and ‘blurred’ nudes after photographs of figures in movement by the 19th-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Other solo exhibitions followed in London in 1950 and 1951.

In 1953, Bacon exhibited landscapes inspired by South Africa and the south of France, and that same year had his first solo exhibition outside Britain at Durlacher Brothers in New York. He exhibited in London again in 1954, which was also the year he represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale, along with Ben Nicholson and Lucian Freud. In 1954, he painted the Man in Blue series. In 1955, he held his first retrospective exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. He also painted portraits of the collectors Robert and Lisa Sainsbury, who became his patrons. In 1962, he also painted his first large triptych entitled Three Studies for a Crucifixion, which was acquired by the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

During a long period dominated by abstract art, Bacon, after Picasso, played a crucial role in the return to figurative art and the representation of the human figure. However, for Bacon, as for Picasso, figurative art did not signify realism. He furthermore stressed that we should not confuse figurative art with illustration. He was always strongly opposed to painting as illustration, to painting that tells a story or becomes narrative. He himself said: ‘Art is a method of opening up areas of feeling rather than merely an illustration of an object.’ This suggests one reason why he often used photographs or sometimes reproductions of paintings, instead of models, even when he was painting portraits of friends. In the latter case, he explained that he preferred them not to be present when he was inflicting graphic and chromatic abuse on their faces. Photographs also provided him with visible angles or unusual light, snapshot surprises, and sometimes even the blurred movement of spoilt snapshots. This ‘blurred’ effect is a general feature of all his work and is boosted with the systematic distortion of the pictorially tortured bodies. The portrait of Michel Leiris, for example, shows an asymmetric face beneath a worried brow, one round eye, the other half closed and downcast. The blurring of faces by wiping them laterally could possibly be argued to be a kind of mannerism, notably in the paintings sometime after 1980, when Bacon abandoned oil painting for pastels. His pastel paintings were more formally composed, technically more restrained, flatter, more conventionally decorative, and appeared less credible in terms of the cruelty represented.

Bacon was one of the first artists to openly depict homosexual themes; characteristic of all his work is a violently distorted and intense representation of figures. With a few exceptions, his painting featured only humans. This is because ‘being in the world’ of humans constituted the focal point of the questions he was asking himself and, indirectly through his painting, the questions he is asking us. His figures are more or less nowhere. They are alone, frequently sitting on a chair, a bed, or even a toilet seat. There is almost no decoration or accessories. The figures can be in a glass cage, in the middle of the suggestion of a closed room, or against a plain background of unbearably violent red, orange, or yellow colours, or discordant insipid pink, murky mauve, or acid-green colours. When he made his furiously shaking heads wail, he was creating a plastic cry of refusal and rebellion, which corresponds to Edvard Munch’s Scream and to Picasso’s Weeping Woman. When he locked figures in transparent cages, he was alluding to man’s imprisonment in his condition. And when he placed popes in cages, it was because they represented the height of alienation. His friend Michel Leiris wrote: ‘Bacon’s figures often show their teeth, those little tips of the skeleton. This is doubtless because we would not know how to examine life relentlessly in order to become better acquainted with it, and appreciate all its beauty, without at times succeeding in exposing the horror which is concealed behind the most magnificent façades.’ Similarly, Bacon explained that ‘we nearly always live through screens – a screened existence. And I sometimes think, when people say my work looks violent, that I have from time to time been able to clear away one or two of the veils or screens.’

Although Bacon objected to being labelled an Expressionist, it is Expressionism with all its complexity and diversity that best describes him. However, far from the centrifugal tendency of most Expressionist artists, Bacon’s Expressionism deals with being wrapped up in oneself. His work is littered with the subject of the Crucifixion, both literally and metaphorically, and Bacon talked of it as an ‘armature’ on which to hang ‘feelings about behaviour and the way life is’. These feelings were very private and involved a whole nexus of associations and sensations. As Bacon himself suggested, painting the Crucifixion was akin to painting a self-portrait.

Solo Exhibitions

from 1949, Hanover Gallery, London

1953, Durlacher Brothers, New York (first exhibition in the USA)

1954, Venice Biennale (representing Great Britain)

1955, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (first retrospective)

1957, Galerie Rive Droite, Paris

1960, Marlborough Fine Art Gallery, London

1962, Tate Gallery, London (travelled to the Kunsthalle, Mannheim;
