Nasalance scores of preexisting passages (oral ZOO-BR, low-pressure oral ZOO-BR2 and NASAL-BR), new nasalance passages (oral Dudu no zoológico, oral Dudu no bosque, oral-nasal O cãozinho Totó and nasal O nenê) and Brasilcleft articulation screening sentences were collected from 245 speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, including 121 males and 124 females, divided into 4 groups: children (5-9 years), adolescents (10-19 years), young adults (20-24 years) and adults (25-35 years). Across all nasalance passages, adult females scored on average 2 percentage points higher than males. Children scored 2-4 percentage points lower than older groups for the preexisting nasalance passages ZOO-BR and ZOO-BR2. Nasalance scores for the new nasalance passages were not significantly different from the preexisting passages. The method follows that proposed by Chen (1997), in which acoustic nasality can be measured by the difference between the amplitude of the vowel&#39;s first formant (A1), and the amplitude of the nasal peak amplitude in the vowel&#39;s first or second harmonic (P0). The measurements were taken at three different time points (start, mid, end) in the vowel. The results show that the main difference between nasal and nasalized vowels is at the vowel&#39;s end, the nasal vowel being considered more nasal than its nasalized counterpart. Despite common belief that the language possesses contrastive nasal vowels, literature examination shows that nasal vowels may be followed by a nasal resonance, while nasalized vowels must be followed by a nasal consonant. It is argued that the nasal resonance may be the remains of a consonant that nasalizes the vowel, making nasal vowels simply coarticulatorily nasalized (e.g. [1]). If so, vowel nasality should not be more informative for the perception of a word containing a nasal vowel than for a word containing a nasalized vowel, as nasality is attributed to coarticulation. To test this hypothesis, randomized stimuli containing the first syllable of words with oral, nasal and nasalized vowels were presented to BP listeners who had to identify the stimuli original word. Preliminary results demonstrate that accuracy decreased for nasal and nasalized stimuli. The investigation was undertaken with different phonetic materials in speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, which features phonological and phonetic vowel nasalization. Ten females read oral, balanced oral-nasal, and nasal loaded sentences in their normal voice, and with a backward focus and a forward focus. Nasalance scores were collected with a Nasometer 6400. A repeated measures ANOVA of the nasalance scores demonstrated a significant main effect of speaking condition (F(2, 18) = 12.87, p &amp;lt; 0.001). The mean nasalance scores across the stimuli in the backward focus and normal speaking conditions were 36.85% (SD 16.85) and 40.18% (SD 18.02), respectively, both significantly lower than the forward focus condition at 45.38% (SD 18.90). The study was made with a nasofiberscope to study the size and the movements of the velopharyngeal opening during the production of monosyllabic words containing oral and nasal diphthongs [ej], [ẽȷ]̃, [aw] and [ãw̃]. The data show that the velum lowering is gradual and that different movements are observable in the velopharyngeal opening. These data confirm previous observations showing that there are several phases in Brazilian Portuguese nasalized diphthongs. The velum lowering has three different phases.
