Certain older activities, such as cotton textile manufacture, have disappeared, but watchmaking has a continuing tradition of precision and quality. Multilane expressways have linked Geneva with Lausanne and with the rest of the Swiss highway system since 1964 and with the French system since 1970. In addition, the city contributed labour and financing for the construction of the highway tunnel beneath <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Mont-Blanc-poem-by-Shelley" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Mont Blanc</a> and the Route-Blanche (White Way) to Italy.
