the end of the ion trajectories. Along the path of the ions through the materials, many electrons are generated, which produce a cascade of further ionizations and, consequently, a shower of secondary electrons. Among these, very low energy secondary electrons can produce damage in the biomolecules by dissociative electron attachment. This work deals with the calculation of the energy distribution of electrons produced by protons in a sample of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), a material that is used as a phantom for living tissues in hadron therapy. PMMA is also of relevance for microelectronics in CMOS technologies and as a photoresist mask in electron beam lithography. We present a Monte Carlo code that, starting from a realistic description of the energy distribution of the electrons ejected by protons moving through PMMA, simulates the entire cascade of generated secondary electrons. By following in detail the motion of all these electrons, we find the radial distribution of the energy that they deposit in PMMA for several initial proton energies characteristic of the Bragg peak. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Monte%20Carlo%20method" title="Monte Carlo method">Monte Carlo method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=secondary%20electrons" title=" secondary electrons"> secondary electrons</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energetic%20ions" title=" energetic ions"> energetic ions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ion-beam%20cancer%20therapy" title=" ion-beam cancer therapy"> ion-beam cancer therapy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ionization%20cross%20section" title=" ionization cross section"> ionization cross section</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polymethylmethacrylate" title=" polymethylmethacrylate"> polymethylmethacrylate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=proton%20beams" title=" proton beams"> proton beams</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=secondary%20electrons" title=" secondary electrons"> secondary electrons</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=radial%20energy%20distribution" title=" radial energy distribution"> radial energy distribution</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48476/energy-deposited-by-secondary-electrons-generated-by-swift-proton-beams-through-polymethylmethacrylate" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48476.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">286</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">73</span> Energy and Exergy Analyses of Thin-Layer Drying of Pineapple Slices</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Apolinar%20Picado">Apolinar Picado</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Steve%20Alfaro"> Steve Alfaro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Gamero"> Rafael Gamero</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Energy and exergy analyses of thin-layer drying of pineapple slices (Ananas comosus L.) were conducted in a laboratory tunnel dryer. Drying experiments were carried out at three temperatures (100, 115 and 130 °C) and an air velocity of 1.45 m/s. The effects of drying variables on energy utilisation, energy utilisation ratio, exergy loss and exergy efficiency were studied. The enthalpy difference of the gas increased as the inlet gas temperature increase. It is observed that at the 75 minutes of the drying process the outlet gas enthalpy achieves a maximum value that is very close to the inlet value and remains constant until the end of the drying process. This behaviour is due to the reduction of the total enthalpy within the system, or in other words, the reduction of the effective heat transfer from the hot gas flow to the vegetable being dried. Further, the outlet entropy exhibits a significant increase that is not only due to the temperature variation, but also to the increase of water vapour phase contained in the hot gas flow. The maximum value of the exergy efficiency curve corresponds to the maximum value observed within the drying rate curves. This maximum value represents the stage when the available energy is efficiently used in the removal of the moisture within the solid. As the drying rate decreases, the available energy is started to be less employed. The exergetic efficiency was directly dependent on the evaporation flux and since the convective drying is less efficient that other types of dryer, it is likely that the exergetic efficiency has relatively low values. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=efficiency" title="efficiency">efficiency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy" title=" energy"> energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exergy" title=" exergy"> exergy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thin-layer%20drying" title=" thin-layer drying"> thin-layer drying</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74793/energy-and-exergy-analyses-of-thin-layer-drying-of-pineapple-slices" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74793.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">255</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">72</span> Transition Metal Carbodiimide vs. Spinel Matrices for Photocatalytic Water Oxidation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karla%20Lienau">Karla Lienau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20M%C3%BCller"> Rafael Müller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ren%C3%A9%20Mor%C3%A9"> René Moré</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Debora%20Ressnig"> Debora Ressnig</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dan%20Cook"> Dan Cook</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Richard%20Walton"> Richard Walton</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Greta%20R.%20Patzke"> Greta R. The four electron transfer process of water oxidation remains the bottleneck of water splitting, so that special emphasis is placed on the development of economic, stable and efficient water oxidation catalysts (WOCs). Our investigations introduced cobalt carbodiimide CoNCN and its transition metal analogues as WOC types, and further studies are focused on the interaction of different transition metals in the convenient all-nitrogen/carbon matrix. This provides further insights into the nature of the ‘true catalyst’ for cobalt centers in this non-oxide environment. Water oxidation activity is evaluated with complementary methods, namely photocatalytically using a Ru-dye sensitized standard setup as well as electrocatalytically, via immobilization of the WOCs on glassy carbon electrodes. To further explore the tuning potential of transition metal combinations, complementary investigations were carried out in oxidic spinel WOC matrices with more versatile host options than the carbodiimide framework. The influence of the preparative history on the WOC performance was evaluated with different synthetic methods (e.g. hydrothermally or microwave assisted). Moreover, the growth mechanism of nanoscale Co3O4-spinel as a benchmark WOC was investigated with in-situ PXRD techniques. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbodiimide" title="carbodiimide">carbodiimide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=photocatalysis" title=" photocatalysis"> photocatalysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spinels" title=" spinels"> spinels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=water%20oxidation" title=" water oxidation"> water oxidation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49987/transition-metal-carbodiimide-vs-spinel-matrices-for-photocatalytic-water-oxidation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49987.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">289</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">71</span> Telemedicine for Telerehabilitation in Areas Affected by Social Conflicts in Colombia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lilia%20Edit%20Aparicio%20Pico">Lilia Edit Aparicio Pico</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paulo%20Cesar%20Coronado%20S%C3%A1nchez"> Paulo Cesar Coronado Sánchez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Roberto%20Ferro%20Escobar"> Roberto Ferro Escobar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents the implementation of telemedicine services for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy rehabilitation, utilizing telebroadcasting of audiovisual content to enhance comprehensive patient recovery in rural areas of San Vicente del Caguán municipality, characterized by high levels of social conflict in Colombia. The region faces challenges such as dysfunctional problems, physical rehabilitation needs, and a high prevalence of hearing diseases, leading to neglect and substandard health services. Limited access to healthcare due to communication barriers and transportation difficulties exacerbates these issues. To address these challenges, a research initiative was undertaken to leverage information and communication technologies (ICTs) to improve healthcare quality and accessibility for this vulnerable population. The primary objective was to develop a tele-rehabilitation system to provide asynchronous online therapies and teleconsultation services for patient follow-up during the recovery process. The project comprises two components: Communication systems and human development. A technological component involving the establishment of a wireless network connecting rural centers and the development of a mobile application for video-based therapy delivery. Communications systems will be provided by a radio link that utilizes internet provided by the Colombian government, located in the municipality of San Vicente del Caguán to connect two rural centers (Pozos and Tres Esquinas) and a mobile application for managing videos for asynchronous broadcasting in sidewalks and patients' homes. This component constitutes an operational model integrating information and telecommunications technologies. The second component involves pedagogical and human development. The primary focus is on the patient, where performance indicators and the efficiency of therapy support were evaluated for the assessment and monitoring of telerehabilitation results in physical, occupational, and speech therapy. They wanted to implement a wireless network to ensure audiovisual content transmission for tele-rehabilitation, design audiovisual content for tele-rehabilitation based on services provided by the ESE Hospital San Rafael in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, develop a software application for fixed and mobile devices enabling access to tele-rehabilitation audiovisual content for healthcare personnel and patients and finally to evaluate the technological solution's contribution to the ESE Hospital San Rafael community. The research comprised four phases: wireless network implementation, audiovisual content design, software application development, and evaluation of the technological solution's impact. Key findings include the successful implementation of virtual teletherapy, both synchronously and asynchronously, and the assessment of technological performance indicators, patient evolution, timeliness, acceptance, and service quality of tele-rehabilitation therapies. The study demonstrated improved service coverage, increased care supply, enhanced access to timely therapies for patients, and positive acceptance of teletherapy modalities. Additionally, the project generated new knowledge for potential replication in other regions and proposed strategies for short- and medium-term improvement of service quality and care indicators <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-health" title="e-health">e-health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=medical%20informatics" title=" medical informatics"> medical informatics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=telemedicine" title=" telemedicine"> telemedicine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=telerehabilitation" title=" telerehabilitation"> telerehabilitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virtual%20therapy" title=" virtual therapy"> virtual therapy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185817/telemedicine-for-telerehabilitation-in-areas-affected-by-social-conflicts-in-colombia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185817.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">55</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">70</span> How Markets React to Corporate Disclosure: An Analysis Using a SEM Model</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Helena%20Susana%20Afonso%20Alves">Helena Susana Afonso Alves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nat%C3%A1lia%20Maria%20Rafael%20Canadas"> Natália Maria Rafael Canadas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20Maria%20Rodrigues"> Ana Maria Rodrigues</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We examined the impact of governance rules on information asymmetry, using the turnover ratio and the bid-ask spread as proxies for the information asymmetry. We used a SEM model and analyzed the indirect relations through the voluntary disclosure of information and the organizational performance. We built a voluntary disclosure index based on the information firms provided in their annual reports and divided the governance characteristics in two constructs: directors’ and supervisors’ structures and ownership structure. We concluded that the ownership structure exerts a direct influence on share price and share liquidity, Otherwise, the directors’ and supervisors’ structures exert an indirect influence, through the organizational performance and the voluntary disclosure of information. The results also show that for firms with high levels of disclosure the bid-ask spread is lower. However, in firms with a high ownership concentration investors tend to increase the bid-ask spreads and trade less, which, in this case, reduces the liquidity of the stock. The failure to find the relationship between voluntary disclosure of information and the turnover ratio shows us that the liquidity of shares is more related to the greater or lesser concentration of shareholders, with the performance of their companies than with the access to information. Moreover, it is clear that the role that information disclosure plays is mainly at the level of price formation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corporate%20governance" title="corporate governance">corporate governance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20asymmetry" title=" information asymmetry"> information asymmetry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=voluntary%20disclosure" title=" voluntary disclosure"> voluntary disclosure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20equation%20modelling" title=" structural equation modelling"> structural equation modelling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SEM" title=" SEM"> SEM</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21255/how-markets-react-to-corporate-disclosure-an-analysis-using-a-sem-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21255.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">516</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">69</span> Preliminary Design of an Aerodynamic Protection for the Scramjet Engine Inlet of the Brazilian Technological Demonstrator Scramjet 14-X S</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gustavo%20J.%20Costa">Gustavo J. Hypersonic aerospace vehicles with air-breathing supersonic propulsion system face extremal environments for super/hypersonic flights in terms of thermal and aerodynamic loads. Thus, it is necessary to use aerodynamic protection at the scramjet engine inlet to face the thermal and aerodynamic loads without compromising the efficiency of scramjet engine, taking into account: i) inlet design (boundary layer, oblique shockwave and reflected oblique shockwave); ii) wall temperature of the cowl and of the compression ramp; iii) supersonic flow into the combustion chamber. The aerodynamic protection of the scramjet engine inlet will act to prevent the engine unstart and match the predictions made by theoretical-analytical, numerical analysis and experimental research, during the atmospheric flight of the Technological Demonstrator scramjet 14-X S. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=14-X" title="14-X">14-X</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hypersonic" title=" hypersonic"> hypersonic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=scramjet" title=" scramjet"> scramjet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supersonic%20combustion" title=" supersonic combustion"> supersonic combustion</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59517/preliminary-design-of-an-aerodynamic-protection-for-the-scramjet-engine-inlet-of-the-brazilian-technological-demonstrator-scramjet-14-x-s" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59517.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">425</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">68</span> On Exploring Search Heuristics for improving the efficiency in Web Information Extraction</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patricia%20Jim%C3%A9nez">Patricia Jiménez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Corchuelo"> Rafael Corchuelo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nowadays the World Wide Web is the most popular source of information that relies on billions of on-line documents. Web mining is used to crawl through these documents, collect the information of interest and process it by applying data mining tools in order to use the gathered information in the best interest of a business, what enables companies to promote theirs. Unfortunately, it is not easy to extract the information a web site provides automatically when it lacks an API that allows to transform the user-friendly data provided in web documents into a structured format that is machine-readable. Rule-based information extractors are the tools intended to extract the information of interest automatically and offer it in a structured format that allow mining tools to process it. However, the performance of an information extractor strongly depends on the search heuristic employed since bad choices regarding how to learn a rule may easily result in loss of effectiveness and/or efficiency. Improving search heuristics regarding efficiency is of uttermost importance in the field of Web Information Extraction since typical datasets are very large. In this paper, we employ an information extractor based on a classical top-down algorithm that uses the so-called Information Gain heuristic introduced by Quinlan and Cameron-Jones. Unfortunately, the Information Gain relies on some well-known problems so we analyse an intuitive alternative, Termini, that is clearly more efficient; we also analyse other proposals in the literature and conclude that none of them outperforms the previous alternative. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20extraction" title="information extraction">information extraction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=search%20heuristics" title=" search heuristics"> search heuristics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=semi-structured%20documents" title=" semi-structured documents"> semi-structured documents</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=web%20mining." title=" web mining. Methods: This study is a case report of success in making and closing a protective jejunostomy. However, the low number of publications on this staged and risky measure of surgical resolution encouraged the team to study the indication and especially the correct time for closing the patient's protective jejunostomy. The main study instrument will be the six-month-old patient's medical record. Results: Based on the observation of the case described, it was observed that the time for the closure of the described procedure (protective jejunostomy) varies according to the level of compromise of the health status of your patient and of an individual of each person. Early closure, or failure to close, can lead to a favorable problem for the patient since several problems can result from this closure, such as new intestinal perforations, hydroelectrolyte disturbances. Despite the risk of new perforations, we suggest closing the protective jejunostomy around the 14th day of the procedure, thus keeping the patient on broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy and absolute fasting, thus reducing the chances of new intestinal perforations. Associated with the closure of the jejunostomy, a gastric tube for decompression is necessary, and care in an intensive care unit and electrolyte replacement is necessary to maintain the stability of the case. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=jejunostomy" title="jejunostomy">jejunostomy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ileostomy" title=" ileostomy"> ileostomy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=enterocolitis" title=" enterocolitis"> enterocolitis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pediatric%20surgery" title=" pediatric surgery"> pediatric surgery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gastric%20surgery" title=" gastric surgery"> gastric surgery</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156828/jejunostomy-and-protective-ileostomy-in-a-patient-with-massive-necrotizing-enterocolitis-a-case-report" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156828.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">84</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">66</span> Identification of Two Novel Carbapenemase Gene Variants from a Carbapenem-Resistant Aeromonas Veronii Environmental Isolate</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Estrada">Rafael Estrada</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cristian%20Ruiz%20Rueda"> Cristian Ruiz Rueda</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Carbapenems are last-resort antibiotics used in clinical settings to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Thus, the emergence and spread of resistance to carbapenems is a major public health concern. Here, we have studied a carbapenem-resistant Aeromonas veronii strain previously isolated from a water sample from Sam Simeon Creek (Hearst San Simeon State Park, CA). Analysis of this isolate using disk-diffusion, CarbaNP, eCIM and mCIM assays revealed that it was resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and all carbapenems tested and that this isolate produced a potentially novel carbapenemase of the Metallo-β-lactamase family. Whole genome sequencing analysis revealed that this A. veronii isolate carries a novel variant of the blacₚₕₐ class β-carbapenemase gene that was closely related to the blacₚₕₐ₇ gene of Aeromonas jandaei. This isolate also carried a novel variant of the blaₒₓₐ class D carbapenemase gene that was most closely related to the blaₒₓₐ-₉₁₂ gene found in other Aeromonas veronii isolates. Finally, we also identified a novel class C β-lactamase gene moderately related to the blaFₒₓ-₁₇ gene of Providencia stuartii and other blaFₒₓ variants identified in Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and other Enterobacteriaceae. Overall, our findings reveal that environmental isolates are an important reservoir of multiple carbapenemases and other β-lactamases of clinical significance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=%CE%B2-lactamases" title="β-lactamases">β-lactamases</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbapenem" title=" carbapenem"> carbapenem</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antibiotic-resistant" title=" antibiotic-resistant"> antibiotic-resistant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aeromonas%20veronii" title=" aeromonas veronii"> aeromonas veronii</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163368/identification-of-two-novel-carbapenemase-gene-variants-from-a-carbapenem-resistant-aeromonas-veronii-environmental-isolate" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163368.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">92</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">65</span> Morpho-Anatomical Responses of Leaf Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) The experiment was laid out on split plot design following the Randomized Complete Block Design. The Looseleaf variety had better performance in terms of plant fresh weight, leaf fresh weight, leaf dry weight, root length, plant height and yield. However, better response was observed in Romaine in terms of leaf diameter, leaf length, root dry weight and root fresh weight. The color of the mulch reflected different qualities of light and hence the quality of absorbed light by the lettuce plants. A higher Far red and red ratio (FR:R) was obtained from green plastic mulch which was followed by the red plastic mulch. The different colored plastic mulch affected the growth and developmental responses of leaf lettuce morphological and leaf anatomical characteristics. Data in all growth morphological and yield parameters showed that those grown with red plastic mulch had better response and had longer stomates than those lettuce grown with the other colored plastic mulch. The soil temperature 10 cm below the plastic mulch was significantly influenced by the color of the mulch. The red plastic mulch had the highest soil temperature recorded while the lowest soil temperature recorded was within the yellow plastic mulch. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anatomical" title="anatomical">anatomical</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lettuce" title=" lettuce"> lettuce</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=morpholological" title=" morpholological"> morpholological</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plastic%20mulch" title=" plastic mulch"> plastic mulch</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22189/morpho-anatomical-responses-of-leaf-lettuce-lactuca-sativa-l-grown-with-different-colored-plastic-mulch" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22189.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">544</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> Potentially Toxic Cyanobacteria and Quantification of Microcystins/Nodularins and Cylindspermopsine in Four Dams of Guanajuato, Mexico</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Vald%C3%A9s-Santiago">Laura Valdés-Santiago</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jos%C3%A9%20Luis%20Castro-Guill%C3%A9n"> José Luis Castro-Guillén</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jorge%20No%C3%A9%20Garc%C3%ADa-Ch%C3%A1vez"> Jorge Noé García-Chávez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rosalba%20Alonso-Rodr%C3%ADguez"> Rosalba Alonso-Rodríguez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Vargas-Bernal"> Rafael Vargas-Bernal</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The quality and availability of the water contained in dams (artificial bodies of water) are at risk due to the presence of uncontrolled growths of cyanobacteria capable of producing cyanotoxins that affect the ecosystem and harm the health of humans and animals. The physicochemical properties were measured, and the degree of eutrophy of four dams from Guanajuato was determined. They presented a pH of 6.1 to 8.4, conductivity of 121 to 415 μS/cm², chlorophyll of 0.43-42.43 μg/L, NO₃- 0-1.2 mg/L and PO₄3- 0.11 to 0.84 mg/L; considering these parameters, the prey most prone to the development of cyanobacterial blooms were El Palote dam, La Purísima dam, and Allende dam, but not El Conejo dam. The potentially toxic cyanobacteria identified were Planktothrix agardhii, Oscillatoria sp., Raphidiopsis sp., and Microcystis sp., Microcystin-LR, Nodularin, and Cylindrospermopsin were quantified, presenting values between 0.08-0.42 and 0.02-2.05 ppb, respectively, the water bodies with the highest concentration were El Palote dam and La Purísima dam. Microcystin-LR and/or Nodularin levels are within the guideline values for human consumption in drinking water established by the World Health Organization for Microcystin-LR and for Cylindrospermopsin by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) in all dams. This work is relevant due to the use of these bodies of water for agriculture and human consumption in the state, and the presence of toxin-producing cyanobacteria can represent an environmental, ecotoxicological, and health problem, so it is recommended to establish a program of frequent monitoring of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the state's dams. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Planktrothrix%20agardhii" title="Planktrothrix agardhii">Planktrothrix agardhii</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raphidiopsis%20sp." title=" Raphidiopsis sp."> Raphidiopsis sp.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Microcystis%20sp." title=" Microcystis sp."> Microcystis sp.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cyanobacterial%20blooms" title=" Cyanobacterial blooms"> Cyanobacterial blooms</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cyanotoxins" title=" Cyanotoxins"> Cyanotoxins</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/178835/potentially-toxic-cyanobacteria-and-quantification-of-microcystinsnodularins-and-cylindspermopsine-in-four-dams-of-guanajuato-mexico" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/178835.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">80</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">63</span> Testing Nature Based Solutions for Air Quality Improvement: Aveiro Case Study</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Ascenso">A. The effects of NBSs are recognized and include improved quality of life, mental and physical health and improvement of air quality, among others. Part of the work developed in the scope of the UNaLab project, which aims to guide cities in developing and implementing their own co-creative NBSs, intends to assess the impacts of NBSs on air quality, using Eindhoven city as a case study. The state-of-the-art online air quality modelling system WRF-CHEM was applied to simulate meteorological and concentration fields over the study area with a spatial resolution of 1 km2 for the year 2015. The baseline simulation (without NBSs) was validated by comparing the model results with monitored data retrieved from the Eindhoven air quality database, showing an adequate model performance. In addition, land use changes were applied in a set of simulations to assess the effects of different types of NBSs. Finally, these simulations were compared with the baseline scenario and the impacts of the NBSs were assessed. Reductions on pollutant concentrations, namely for NOx and PM, were found after the application of the NBSs in the Eindhoven study area. The present work is particularly important to support public planners and decision makers in understanding the effects of their actions and planning more sustainable cities for the future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=air%20quality" title="air quality">air quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modelling%20approach" title=" modelling approach"> modelling approach</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature%20based%20solutions" title=" nature based solutions"> nature based solutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20area" title=" urban area"> urban area</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89716/testing-nature-based-solutions-for-air-quality-improvement-aveiro-case-study" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89716.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">238</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">62</span> Utilizing Minecraft Java Edition for the Application of Fire Disaster Procedures to Establish Fire Disaster Readiness for Grade 12 STEM students of DLSU-IS</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aravella%20Flores">Aravella Flores</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose%20Rafael%20E.%20Sotelo"> Jose Rafael E. This platform is suitable because fire DRRR is challenging to learn in a practical setting as well as questionable with regard to supplementing the successful implementation of textbook knowledge into actual practice. The purpose of this study is to acknowledge whether Minecraft can be a suitable environment to familiarize oneself to fire DRRR. The objectives are achieved through utilizing Minecraft in simulating fire scenarios which allows the participants to freely act upon and practice fire DRRR. The experiment was divided into the grounding and validation phase, where researchers observed the performance of the participants in the simulation. A pre-simulation and post-simulation survey was given to acknowledge the change in participants’ perception of being able to utilize fire DRRR procedures and their vulnerabilities. The paired t-test was utilized, showing significant differences in the pre-simulation and post-simulation survey scores, thus, insinuating improved judgment of DRRR, lessening their vulnerabilities in the possibility of encountering a fire hazard. This research poses a model for future research which can gather more participants and dwell on more complex codes outside just command blocks and into the code lines of Minecraft itself. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=minecraft" title="minecraft">minecraft</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DRRR" title=" DRRR"> DRRR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fire" title=" fire"> fire</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=disaster" title=" disaster"> disaster</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simulation" title=" simulation"> simulation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148659/utilizing-minecraft-java-edition-for-the-application-of-fire-disaster-procedures-to-establish-fire-disaster-readiness-for-grade-12-stem-students-of-dlsu-is" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148659.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">61</span> Inhibitory Effect of P2Y1R Agonist 1-Indolinoalkyl 2-Phenolic Derivative on Prostate Cancer Cell Proliferation via the MAPK Signalling</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hien%20Thi%20Thu%20Le">Hien Thi Thu Le</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nuno%20Rafael%20Candeias"> Nuno Rafael Candeias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olli%20Yli-Harja"> Olli Yli-Harja</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Meenakshisundaram%20Kandhavelu"> Meenakshisundaram Kandhavelu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Purinergic receptor 1 (P2Y1R) is the potential therapeutic target for inducing prostate cancer (PCa) cell death. Recently, 1-indolinoalkyl 2-phenolic derivative, HIC, was identified as a P2Y1R agonist that increases apoptosis and inhibits cell proliferation of PCa. However, the biological effects of HIC have not been extensively studied at the molecular level. In the present study, we have investigated the anticancer effects of HIC and the molecular mechanisms underlying in PCa cells. Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) of HIC was measured as 15.98 μM and 15.64 μM for DU145 and PC3 cells, respectively. In addition, we found that HIC inhibited cell growth and metastasis of PC3 and DU145 cells colonies, spheroid areas, and migrated cells. RNA seq analysis revealed significant changes of over 3000 genes (p value < 0.05) upon HIC treatment in PC3 and DU145 cells. Genes involved in DNA damage, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest at G1/S phase were modulated by HIC treatment. MAPK and NF-κB protein array revealed the increased expression of ERK1/2, JNK1/2, p53 phosphorylation, and p53 protein. ERK1/2 and JNK1/2 activations are known to increase the stabilization of p53, a tumor suppressor protein, which is required to arrest the cell cycle at G1/S phase and cause cell death of PCa cells. Overall, our results suggest that HIC can serve as a multi-dimensional chemotherapeutic agent possessing strong cytotoxic, anti-cancer, and anti-metastasis against PCa growth. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prostate%20cancer" title="prostate cancer">prostate cancer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=P2Y1%20receptor" title=" P2Y1 receptor"> P2Y1 receptor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=apoptosis" title=" apoptosis"> apoptosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metastasis" title=" metastasis"> metastasis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132678/inhibitory-effect-of-p2y1r-agonist-1-indolinoalkyl-2-phenolic-derivative-on-prostate-cancer-cell-proliferation-via-the-mapk-signalling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132678.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">133</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">60</span> Adaptable Buildings for More Sustainable Housing: Energy Life Cycle Analysis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Santos%20Fischer">Rafael Santos Fischer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alo%C3%ADsio%20Leoni%20Schmid"> Aloísio Leoni Schmid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amanda%20Dalla-Bonna"> Amanda Dalla-Bonna</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The life cycle analysis and the energy life cycle analysis are useful design support tools when sustainability becomes imperative. The final phase of buildings life cycle is probably the least known, on which less knowledge is available. In the Brazilian building industry, the lifespan of a building design rarely is treated as a definite design parameter. There is rather a common sense attitude to take any building demands as permanent, and to take for granted that buildings solutions are durable and solid. Housing, being a permanent issue in any society, presents a real challenge to the choice of a design lifespan. In Brazilian history, there was a contrast of the native solutions of collective, non-durable houses built by several nomadic tribes, and the stone and masonry buildings introduced by the sedentary Portuguese conquerors. Durable buildings are commonly associated with welfare. However, social dynamics makes traditional families of both parents and children be just one of several possible arrangements. In addition, a more liberal attitude towards family leads to an increase in the number of people living in alternative arrangements. Japan is an example of country where houses have been made intentionally ephemeral since the half of 20th century. The present article presents the development of a flexible housing design solution on the basis of the Design Science Research approach. A comparison in terms of energy life cycle shows how flexibility and dematerialization may point at a feasible future for housing policies in Brazil. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adaptability" title="adaptability">adaptability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adaptable%20building" title=" adaptable building"> adaptable building</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=embodied%20energy" title=" embodied energy"> embodied energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=life%20cyclce%20analysis" title=" life cyclce analysis"> life cyclce analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20housing" title=" social housing"> social housing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77269/adaptable-buildings-for-more-sustainable-housing-energy-life-cycle-analysis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77269.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">589</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Hidden Populations and Women: New Political, Methodological and Ethical Challenges</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ren%C3%A9e%20Fregosi">Renée Fregosi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The contribution presently proposed will report on the beginnings of a Franco-Chilean study to be launched in 2015 by a multidisciplinary team of Renée Fregosi Political Science University Paris 3 / CECIEC, Norma Muñoz Public Policies University of Santiago of Chile, Jean-Daniel Lelievre, Medicine Paris 11 University, Marcelo WOLFF Medicine University of Chile, Cecilia Blatrix Political Science University Paris-Tech, Ernesto OTTONE, Political Science University of Chile, Paul DENY Medicine Paris 13 University, Rafael Bugueno Medicine Hospital Urgencia Pública of Santiago, Eduardo CARRASCO Political Science Paris 3 University. The problem of hidden populations challenges some criteria and concepts to re-examine: in particular the concept of target population, sampling methods to "snowball" and the cost-effectiveness criterion that shows the connection of political and scientific fields. Furthermore, if the pattern of homosexual transmission still makes up the highest percentage of the modes of infection with HIV, there is a continuous increase in the number of people infected through heterosexual sex, including women and persons aged 50 years and older. This group can be described as " unknown risk people." Access to these populations is a major challenge and raises methodological, ethical and political issues of prevention, particularly on the issue of screening. This paper proposes an inventory of these types of problems and their articulation, to define a new phase in the prevention against HIV refocused on women. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HIV%20testing" title="HIV testing">HIV testing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hidden%20populations" title=" hidden populations"> hidden populations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=difficult%20to%20reach%20PLWHA" title=" difficult to reach PLWHA"> difficult to reach PLWHA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women" title=" women"> women</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unknown%20risk%20people" title=" unknown risk people "> unknown risk people </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20752/hidden-populations-and-women-new-political-methodological-and-ethical-challenges" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20752.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">522</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">58</span> On the Added Value of Probabilistic Forecasts Applied to the Optimal Scheduling of a PV Power Plant with Batteries in French Guiana</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Alvarenga">Rafael Alvarenga</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hubert%20Herbaux"> Hubert Herbaux</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laurent%20Linguet"> Laurent Linguet</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The uncertainty concerning the power production of intermittent renewable energy is one of the main barriers to the integration of such assets into the power grid. Efforts have thus been made to develop methods to quantify this uncertainty, allowing producers to ensure more reliable and profitable engagements related to their future power delivery. Even though a diversity of probabilistic approaches was proposed in the literature giving promising results, the added value of adopting such methods for scheduling intermittent power plants is still unclear. In this study, the profits obtained by a decision-making model used to optimally schedule an existing PV power plant connected to batteries are compared when the model is fed with deterministic and probabilistic forecasts generated with two of the most recent methods proposed in the literature. Moreover, deterministic forecasts with different accuracy levels were used in the experiments, testing the utility and the capability of probabilistic methods of modeling the progressively increasing uncertainty. Even though probabilistic approaches are unquestionably developed in the recent literature, the results obtained through a study case show that deterministic forecasts still provide the best performance if accurate, ensuring a gain of 14% on final profits compared to the average performance of probabilistic models conditioned to the same forecasts. When the accuracy of deterministic forecasts progressively decreases, probabilistic approaches start to become competitive options until they completely outperform deterministic forecasts when these are very inaccurate, generating 73% more profits in the case considered compared to the deterministic approach. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PV%20power%20forecasting" title="PV power forecasting">PV power forecasting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=uncertainty%20quantification" title=" uncertainty quantification"> uncertainty quantification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimal%20scheduling" title=" optimal scheduling"> optimal scheduling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=power%20systems" title=" power systems"> power systems</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162797/on-the-added-value-of-probabilistic-forecasts-applied-to-the-optimal-scheduling-of-a-pv-power-plant-with-batteries-in-french-guiana" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162797.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">87</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">57</span> Assessment of Airtightness Through a Standardized Procedure in a Nearly-Zero Energy Demand House</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mar%20Ca%C3%B1ada%20Soriano">Mar Cañada Soriano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Royo-Pastor"> Rafael Royo-Pastor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolina%20Aparicio-Fern%C3%A1ndez"> Carolina Aparicio-Fernández</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose-Luis%20Vivancos"> Jose-Luis Vivancos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The lack of insulation, along with the existence of air leakages, constitute a meaningful impact on the energy performance of buildings. Both of them lead to increases in the energy demand through additional heating and/or cooling loads. Additionally, they cause thermal discomfort. In order to quantify these uncontrolled air currents, pressurization and depressurization tests can be performed. Among them, the Blower Door test is a standardized procedure to determine the airtightness of a space which characterizes the rate of air leakages through the envelope surface, calculating to this purpose an air flow rate indicator. In this sense, the low-energy buildings complying with the Passive House design criteria are required to achieve high levels of airtightness. Due to the invisible nature of air leakages, additional tools are often considered to identify where the infiltrations take place. Among them, the infrared thermography entails a valuable technique to this purpose since it enables their detection. The aim of this study is to assess the airtightness of a typical Mediterranean dwelling house located in the Valencian orchad (Spain) restored under the Passive House standard using to this purpose the blower-door test. Moreover, the building energy performance modelling tools TRNSYS (TRaNsient System Simulation program) and TRNFlow (TRaNsient Flow) have been used to determine its energy performance, and the infiltrations’ identification was carried out by means of infrared thermography. The low levels of infiltrations obtained suggest that this house may comply with the Passive House standard. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=airtightness" title="airtightness">airtightness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blower%20door" title=" blower door"> blower door</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trnflow" title=" trnflow"> trnflow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infrared%20thermography" title=" infrared thermography"> infrared thermography</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146714/assessment-of-airtightness-through-a-standardized-procedure-in-a-nearly-zero-energy-demand-house" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146714.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">123</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">56</span> Device for Reversible Hydrogen Isotope Storage with Aluminum Oxide Ceramic Case</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Igor%20P.%20Maximkin">Igor P. One of the ways to solve this problem is to use Al₂O₃ high-strength non-porous ceramics as a structural material of the bed body. This alumina ceramics offers high strength characteristics, but its main advantages are low hydrogen permeability (as against the used structural material) and high dielectric properties. The latter enables direct induction heating of an hydride-forming metal without essential heating of the pressure and containment vessel. The use of alumina ceramics and induction heating allows: - essential reduction of tritium extraction time; - several orders reduction of tritium diffusion leakage; - more complete extraction of tritium from metal hydrides due to its higher heating up to melting in the event of final disposal of the device. The paper presents computational and experimental results for the tritium bed designed to absorb 6 liters of tritium. Titanium was used as hydrogen isotope sorbent. Results of hydrogen realize kinetic from hydride-forming metal, strength and cyclic service life tests are reported. Recommendations are also provided for the practical use of the given bed type. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aluminum%20oxide%20ceramic" title="aluminum oxide ceramic">aluminum oxide ceramic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrogen%20pressure" title=" hydrogen pressure"> hydrogen pressure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrogen%20isotope%20storage" title=" hydrogen isotope storage"> hydrogen isotope storage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=titanium%20hydride" title=" titanium hydride"> titanium hydride</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62153/device-for-reversible-hydrogen-isotope-storage-with-aluminum-oxide-ceramic-case" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62153.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">407</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">55</span> Comparative Analysis of the Third Generation of Research Data for Evaluation of Solar Energy Potential</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudineia%20Brazil">Claudineia Brazil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elison%20Eduardo%20Jardim%20Bierhals"> Elison Eduardo Jardim Bierhals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luciane%20Teresa%20Salvi"> Luciane Teresa Salvi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Haag"> Rafael Haag</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Renewable energy sources are dependent on climatic variability, so for adequate energy planning, observations of the meteorological variables are required, preferably representing long-period series. Despite the scientific and technological advances that meteorological measurement systems have undergone in the last decades, there is still a considerable lack of meteorological observations that form series of long periods. The reanalysis is a system of assimilation of data prepared using general atmospheric circulation models, based on the combination of data collected at surface stations, ocean buoys, satellites and radiosondes, allowing the production of long period data, for a wide gamma. The third generation of reanalysis data emerged in 2010, among them is the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) developed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), these data have a spatial resolution of 0.50 x 0.50. In order to overcome these difficulties, it aims to evaluate the performance of solar radiation estimation through alternative data bases, such as data from Reanalysis and from meteorological satellites that satisfactorily meet the absence of observations of solar radiation at global and/or regional level. The results of the analysis of the solar radiation data indicated that the reanalysis data of the CFSR model presented a good performance in relation to the observed data, with determination coefficient around 0.90. Therefore, it is concluded that these data have the potential to be used as an alternative source in locations with no seasons or long series of solar radiation, important for the evaluation of solar energy potential. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate" title="climate">climate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reanalysis" title=" reanalysis"> reanalysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=renewable%20energy" title=" renewable energy"> renewable energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=solar%20radiation" title=" solar radiation"> solar radiation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98532/comparative-analysis-of-the-third-generation-of-research-data-for-evaluation-of-solar-energy-potential" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98532.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">209</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">54</span> Flirting with Ephemerality and the Daily Production of the Fleeting City</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Martinez">Rafael Martinez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Our view of cities is dominated by the built environment. Buildings, streets, avenues, bridges, flyovers, and so on virtually exclude anything not fixed, permanently alterable or indefinitely temporal. Yet, city environments can also be shaped by temporally produced structures which, regardless of their transience, act as thresholds separating or segregating people and spaces. Academic works on cities conceptualize them, whether temporary or permanent, as tangible environments. This paper considers the idea of the ephemeral city, a city purposely produced and lived in as an impermanent, fluid and transitional environment resulting from an alignment of different forces. In particular, the paper proposes to observe how certain performative practices inform the emergence of ephemeral spaces in the city’s daily life. With Singapore as its backdrop and focusing foreign workers, the paper aims at documenting how everyday life practices, such as flirting, result in production of transitional space, informed by semiotic blurs, and yet material, perceptible, human and tangible for some. In this paper, it is argued that flirting for Singapore's foreign workers entails skillful understanding of what is proposed as the 'flirting cartography.' Thus, spatially, flirtation becomes not only a matter to be taken for granted but also a form of producing a fleeting space that requires deployment of various techniques drawn upon a particular knowledge. The paper is based upon a performative methodology which seeks to understand the praxis and rationale of the ephemerality of some spaces produced by foreign workers within this cosmopolitan city. By resorting to this methodological approach, the paper aims to establish the connection between the visibility gained by usually marginalized populations through their ephemeral reclamation of public spaces in the city. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ephemeral" title="ephemeral">ephemeral</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flirting" title=" flirting"> flirting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Singapore" title=" Singapore"> Singapore</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=space" title=" space"> space</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/112193/flirting-with-ephemerality-and-the-daily-production-of-the-fleeting-city" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/112193.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">107</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">53</span> Statistical Model of Water Quality in Estero El Macho, Machala-El Oro</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Zhindon%20Almeida">Rafael Zhindon Almeida</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Surface water quality is an important concern for the evaluation and prediction of water quality conditions. The objective of this study is to develop a statistical model that can accurately predict the water quality of the El Macho estuary in the city of Machala, El Oro province. The methodology employed in this study is of a basic type that involves a thorough search for theoretical foundations to improve the understanding of statistical modeling for water quality analysis. The research design is correlational, using a multivariate statistical model involving multiple linear regression and principal component analysis. The results indicate that water quality parameters such as fecal coliforms, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, iron and dissolved oxygen exceed the allowable limits. The water of the El Macho estuary is determined to be below the required water quality criteria. The multiple linear regression model, based on chemical oxygen demand and total dissolved solids, explains 99.9% of the variance of the dependent variable. In addition, principal component analysis shows that the model has an explanatory power of 86.242%. The study successfully developed a statistical model to evaluate the water quality of the El Macho estuary. The estuary did not meet the water quality criteria, with several parameters exceeding the allowable limits. The multiple linear regression model and principal component analysis provide valuable information on the relationship between the various water quality parameters. The findings of the study emphasize the need for immediate action to improve the water quality of the El Macho estuary to ensure the preservation and protection of this valuable natural resource. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=statistical%20modeling" title="statistical modeling">statistical modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=water%20quality" title=" water quality"> water quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiple%20linear%20regression" title=" multiple linear regression"> multiple linear regression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=principal%20components" title=" principal components"> principal components</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=statistical%20models" title=" statistical models"> statistical models</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176758/statistical-model-of-water-quality-in-estero-el-macho-machala-el-oro" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176758.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">98</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">52</span> Aeronautical Noise Management inside an Aerodrome: Analysis of Sound Exposure on Aviation Professional’s Health</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Felipe%20Guatura%20da%20Silva">Rafael Felipe Guatura da Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jos%C3%A9%20Luis%20Gomes%20da%20Silva"> José Luis Gomes da Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luiz%20Antonio"> Luiz Antonio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ferreira%20Perrone%20de%20Brito"> Ferreira Perrone de Brito</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Noise can cause serious damage to human health, such as hearing loss, stress, irritability, fatigue, and others. Aviation is a place where your entire process should be work out with the utmost attention and commitment of human resources, thus the need to study the effects of noise in this sector, as aeronautical noise levels are high. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of noise pollution on the performance of professionals regarding the fatigue generated by aeronautical noise and time to noise exposure. The methodology used consists of measurements of sound pressure levels at 42 points of the aerodrome. The selected points are located inside the hangars and outside the airfield hangars. All points chosen are close to the professionals' work areas, seeking to identify the sound pressure levels to which they submitted. The other part of the research used the principle on the application of a self-report questionnaire to a sample of 207 people working inside the aerodrome. The 207 professionals surveyed consist of aircraft mechanics, pilots, maintenance managers, and administrative professionals. The questionnaire was intended to evaluate the knowledge that professionals have about health risks caused by sound exposure as well as to identify diseases that professionals have, and that may be associated with exposure to high levels of sound pressure. Preliminary results identify points with sound pressure levels of up to 91.7 dB, thus highlighting the need for the use of personal protective equipment that reduces noise exposure. It was also identified a large number of professionals who are bothered by the sound exposure and approximately 25% of professionals interviewed reported having a hearing disorder. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aeronautical%20noise" title="aeronautical noise">aeronautical noise</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fatigue" title=" fatigue"> fatigue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=noise%20and%20health" title=" noise and health"> noise and health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=noise%20management" title=" noise management"> noise management</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113625/aeronautical-noise-management-inside-an-aerodrome-analysis-of-sound-exposure-on-aviation-professionals-health" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113625.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">147</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">51</span> Immune Complex Components Act as Agents in Relapsing Fever Borrelia Mediated Rosette Formation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mukunda%20Upreti">Mukunda Upreti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jill%20Storry"> Jill Storry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Bj%C3%B6rk"> Rafael Björk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emilie%20Louvet"> Emilie Louvet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johan%20Normark"> Johan Normark</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sven%20Bergstr%C3%B6m"> Sven Bergström</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Borrelia duttonii and most other relapsing fever species are Gram-negative bacteria which cause a blood borne infection characterized by the binding of bacterium to erythrocytes. The bacteria associate with two or more erythrocytes to form clusters of cells into rosettes. Rosetting is a major virulence factor and the mechanism is believed to facilitate persistence of bacteria in the circulatory system and the avoidance of host immune cells through masking or steric hindrance effects. However, the molecular mechanisms of rosette formation are still poorly understood. This study aims at determining the molecules involved in the rosette formation phenomenon. Fractionated serum, using different affinity purification methods, was investigated as a rosetting agent and IgG and at least one other serum components were needed for rosettes to form. An IgG titration curve demonstrated that IgG alone is not enough to restore rosette formation level to the level whole serum gives. IgG hydrolysis by IdeS ( Immunoglobulin G-degrading enzyme of Streptococcus pyogenes) and deglycosylation using N-Glycanase proved that the whole IgG molecule regardless of saccharide moieties is critical for Borrelia induced rosetting. Complement components C3 and C4 were also important serum molecules necessary to maintain optimum rosetting rates. The deactivation of complement network and serum depletion with C3 and C4 significantly reduced the rosette formation rate. The dependency of IgG and complement components also implied involvement of the complement receptor (CR1). Rosette formation test with Knops null RBC and sCR1 confirmed that CR1 is also part of Borrelia induced rosette formation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=complement%20components%20C3%20and%20C4" title="complement components C3 and C4">complement components C3 and C4</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=complement%20receptor%201" title=" complement receptor 1"> complement receptor 1</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Immunoglobulin%20G" title=" Immunoglobulin G"> Immunoglobulin G</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Knops%20null" title=" Knops null"> Knops null</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rosetting" title=" Rosetting"> Rosetting</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28843/immune-complex-components-act-as-agents-in-relapsing-fever-borrelia-mediated-rosette-formation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28843.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">322</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> Using Game Engines in Lightning Shielding: The Application of the Rolling Spheres Method on Virtual As-Built Power Substations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yuri%20A.%20Gruber">Yuri A. In order to mitigate this problem, a meticulous planning of the power substation protection system is of vital importance. A critical part of this is the distribution of shielding wires through the substation, which creates a 3D imaginary protection mesh similar to a circus tarpaulin. Equipment enclosed in the volume defined by that 3D mesh is considered protected against lightning strikes. The use of traditional methods of longitudinal cutting analysis based on 2D CAD tools makes the process laborious and the results obtained may not guarantee satisfactory protection of electrical equipment. This work describes the application of a Game Engine to the problem of lightning protection of power substations providing the visualization of the 3D protection mesh, the amount of protected components and the highlight of equipment which remain unprotected. In addition, aspects regarding the implementation and the advantages of approaching the problem using Unreal® Engine 4 are described. In order to validate results, a comparison with traditional 2D methods is applied to the same case study to which the proposed technique has been applied. Finally, a comparative study involving different levels of protection using the technique developed in this work is presented, showing that modern game engines can be a powerful accessory for simulations in several areas of engineering. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=game%20engine" title="game engine">game engine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rolling%20spheres%20method" title=" rolling spheres method"> rolling spheres method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=substation%20protection" title=" substation protection"> substation protection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UE4" title=" UE4"> UE4</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Unreal%20Engine%204" title=" Unreal Engine 4"> Unreal Engine 4</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80764/using-game-engines-in-lightning-shielding-the-application-of-the-rolling-spheres-method-on-virtual-as-built-power-substations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80764.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">527</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">49</span> The Invisible Labour of Informal Care: Parentified Caregiving in David Chariandy's Soucouyant</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Walter%20Rafael%20Ramos%20Villanueva">Walter Rafael Ramos Villanueva</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The overwhelming majority of scholarship on David Chariandy’s novel Soucouyant focuses on how Adele’s dementia represents the preservation of “cultural memory” and the perniciousness of “historical trauma.” However, by metaphorizing Adele’s mental condition, these critics risk treating her dementia as mostly figurative, and they thus elide a more detailed discussion of the literal ramifications of her dementia diagnosis. To move beyond these readings, then, my paper will approach Adele’s disorder as a literal medical condition and explore how her caregiving needs affect not only her but also those around her. Soucouyant subverts traditional caregiving narratives by depicting the difficult and typically invisible labour of informal caregiving that is undertaken by the families and friends of those who are ill or otherwise disabled. Because Adele’s family is unable to access proper public healthcare resources within the community, the burden of care falls upon the protagonist and his brother, who become “parentified children.” Parentified children, according to Nancy D. Chase, are “parents to their parents, and fulfill this role at the expense of their own developmentally appropriate needs and pursuits.” The novel provides a depiction of informal caregiving that is multi-faceted and asks us to question why is it exactly that we place the burden of care on those who are not equipped to handle such pressures instead of putting the onus on the government and the public healthcare system to take care of its most vulnerable members. Ageing Studies scholar Larry Polvika notes that although policymakers often offer “pious expressions of appreciation” and acknowledge that informal caregiving is “the backbone of our long-term care system,” governmental support for these caregivers remains inadequate. It is my belief that, by showcasing the struggles of informal caregivers, Chariandy’s text combats this dangerous and empty political rhetoric. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=caregiving" title="caregiving">caregiving</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dementia" title=" dementia"> dementia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literature" title=" literature"> literature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parentified%20children" title=" parentified children"> parentified children</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121750/the-invisible-labour-of-informal-care-parentified-caregiving-in-david-chariandys-soucouyant" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121750.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">174</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">48</span> Development of Mixed Matrix Membranes by Using NH₂-Functionalized UiO-66 and [APTMS][AC] Ionic Liquid for the Separation of CO₂</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hafiza%20Mamoona%20Khalid">Hafiza Mamoona Khalid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Afshan%20Mujahid"> Afshan Mujahid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asif%20Ali"> Asif Ali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asim%20Laeeq%20Khan"> Asim Laeeq Khan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mahmood%20Saleem"> Mahmood Saleem</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20M.%20Santos"> Rafael M. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), which are fabricated by incorporating the beneficial properties of highly selective inorganic fillers into a polymer matrix, have exhibited significant progress and the ability to enhance the performance of a membrane for gas separation. In this research, an amine-based ionic liquid (IL) [APTMS][AC] was prepared, which has greater CO₂ affinity and greater solubility due to its amine moiety. The metal–organic framework (MOF) UiO-66 with a multidimensional crystalline structure was used as a filler due to its appropriate porosity and tunable properties, and it was functionalized with NH₂. MOFs were further modified with an IL to prepare UiO-66@IL and UiO-66-NH₂@IL, and MMMs incorporating each MOF were fabricated with the polymer Pebax-1657. All the prepared membranes and MOFs were characterized to predict their separation efficiency. Several characterization techniques, namely, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, and SEM, were used to successfully synthesize UiO-66@IL and UiO-66-NH₂@IL composites and confirmed proper dispersion and excellent polymer‒ filler compatibility at filler loadings ranging from 0 to 30 wt.%. The separation performances were investigated, and the results showed that the incorporation of RTIL with the highly crystalline structure and large surface area of UiO-66 enhanced the separation efficiency of the membrane. The permeability of CO₂ for all fabricated membranes continuously increased with increasing filler concentration, wherein the permeability was comparatively high for the UiO-66-NH₂ MMMs. The CO₂/CH₄ selectivity improved by 35%, 54%, and 60%, respectively, for UiO-66@IL, UiO-66-NH₂, and UiO-66-NH₂@IL MMMs compared to simple UiO-66 for CO₂/CH₄ and by 28%, 36%, and 63%, respectively, for CO₂/N₂, with an increase in filler loading in the MMMs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gas%20separation" title="gas separation">gas separation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixed%20matrix%20membranes" title=" mixed matrix membranes"> mixed matrix membranes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CO%E2%82%82%20sequestration" title=" CO₂ sequestration"> CO₂ sequestration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title=" climate change"> climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=global%20warming" title=" global warming"> global warming</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/193330/development-of-mixed-matrix-membranes-by-using-nh2-functionalized-uio-66-and-aptmsac-ionic-liquid-for-the-separation-of-co2" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/193330.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">13</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> Retrospective Study on the Prognosis of Patients with New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation to Evaluate the Risk of Developing Occult Cancer in Absence of Concurrent Chronic Inflammatory Disease</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Helen%20Huang">Helen Huang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francisco%20Javier%20Quesada%20Ocet"> Francisco Javier Quesada Ocet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Blanca%20Quesada%20Oce"> Blanca Quesada Oce</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Javier%20Jimenez%20Bello"> Javier Jimenez Bello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Victor%20Palanca%20Gil"> Victor Palanca Gil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alba%20Cervero%20Rubio"> Alba Cervero Rubio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20Paya%20Chaume"> Ana Paya Chaume</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alejandro%20Herreros-Pomares"> Alejandro Herreros-Pomares</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fernando%20Vidal-Vanaclocha"> Fernando Vidal-Vanaclocha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Paya%20Serrano"> Rafael Paya Serrano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aurelio%20Quesada%20Dorador"> Aurelio Quesada Dorador</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Monica%20Soliman"> Monica Soliman</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: Cancer favors both the pro-inflammatory state and autonomic dysfunction, two important mechanisms in the genesis of AF. Atrial remodeling might be caused as a result of paraneoplastic conditions or the result of direct expression of neoplasia. Here, we hypothesize that cancer, through inflammatory mediators, may favor the appearance of AF and patients with the first episode of AF could have a higher risk of developing cancer. Method: Data was collected from patients who attended the emergency department of our hospital for the first episode of AF, diagnosed electrocardiographically, between 2010-2015 (n = 712). The minimum follow-up was 2 years, recording the appearance of cancer, total mortality, recurrences of AF and other events. Patients who developed cancer and those who did not during the 2 years after the onset of AF were compared, as well as with the incidence of cancer in Spain in 2012. Results: After 2 years, 35 patients (4.91%) were diagnosed with cancer, with an annual incidence of 2.45%. Hematological neoplasms were the most frequent (34.28%). The cancer group was older (76.68 +/-12.75 years vs 74.16 +/-12.71; p <0.05) and had fewer typical symptoms (palpitations) (33.38% vs 14.28% , p <0.05). The incidence of cancer in Spain during 2012 was 0.46%, much lower than our sample. When comparing the incidence by age, these differences were maintained both in those over 65 years of age and in those under 65 years of age (2.17% vs. 0.28%; 0.28% vs. 0.18% respectively). Discussion: Therefore, a high incidence of cancer in patients with the first episode of AF was observed (the annual incidence of 2.45% after the onset of AF is 6.1 times that of the general population). After the evaluation of patients with AF in their first detected episode, surveillance of the appearance of cancer should be considered in clinical practice. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cancer" title="cancer">cancer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cardiovascular%20outcomes" title=" cardiovascular outcomes"> cardiovascular outcomes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=atrial%20fibrillation" title=" atrial fibrillation"> atrial fibrillation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inflammation" title=" inflammation"> inflammation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/145325/retrospective-study-on-the-prognosis-of-patients-with-new-onset-atrial-fibrillation-to-evaluate-the-risk-of-developing-occult-cancer-in-absence-of-concurrent-chronic-inflammatory-disease" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/145325.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">147</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">46</span> In vivo Genotoxicity Testing of Sesbania Grandiflora (Katuray) Flower Methanolic Extract </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Levylee%20Bautista">Levylee Bautista</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dawn%20Grace%20Santos"> Dawn Grace Santos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aishwarya%20Veluchamy"> Aishwarya Veluchamy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jesusa%20Santos"> Jesusa Santos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ghafoor"> Ghafoor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jr.%20I%20Haque"> Jr. I Haque</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rodolfo%20Rafael"> Rodolfo Rafael</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The booming interest in using natural compounds as an alternative to conventional medications has paved way to focus the attention on plants that provide rich sources of bioactive phytochemicals. For regulatory purposes, evaluation of the genotoxic effects of such alternatives is therefore empirical as part of the plant’s hazard assessment. Sesbania grandiflora is among the plants used as a traditional remedy in folk medicine and a subject of research for its medicinal benefits. This study aimed to evaluate the genotoxic potential induced by S. grandiflora flower methanol extract (SGFME) in terms of the frequency of micronucleus (MN) in polychromatic erythrocyte (PCE) (MNPCE) and PCE ratio employing the micronucleus assay. The frequency of MN was examined in bone marrow cells (BMCs) obtained from male Swiss albino mice exposed in vivo to four different concentrations (11.25, 22.5, 40, and 90 mg/kg) of SGFME and MMC (70 mg/kg; positive control) and sacrificed 24 hours post-intraperitoneal injection. Results showed a significant (p < 0.01) rate of MNPCEs for 11.25 and 22.5 tested concentrations of SGFME and is comparable with the MMC-treated mice. Although PCE ratio values in all doses of SGFME-treated mice were over 0.20, it is worth noting that 40 and 90 tested concentrations of SGFME-treated mice exhibited the lowest value, i.e., 0.22 and 0.28, respectively. The present study has demonstrated that S. grandiflora possesses genotoxic potential for murine BMCs. Such activity could be ascribed from the bioactive compounds present in S. grandiflora that require further isolation and characterization of the active molecules. Likewise, findings of this study warrant a caution of the use of S. grandiflora insomuch as further investigations do not demonstrate their safety. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=genotoxicity" title="genotoxicity">genotoxicity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=micronucleus" title=" micronucleus"> micronucleus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phytochemicals" title=" phytochemicals"> phytochemicals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sesbania%20grandiflora" title=" Sesbania grandiflora"> Sesbania grandiflora</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/128583/in-vivo-genotoxicity-testing-of-sesbania-grandiflora-katuray-flower-methanolic-extract" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/128583.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">140</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> Computational Feasibility Study of a Torsional Wave Transducer for Tissue Stiffness Monitoring</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Mu%C3%B1oz">Rafael Muñoz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juan%20Melchor"> Juan Melchor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alicia%20Valera"> Alicia Valera</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Peralta"> Laura Peralta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Rus"> Guillermo Rus</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A torsional piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer design is proposed to measure shear moduli in soft tissue with direct access availability, using shear wave elastography technique. The measurement of shear moduli of tissues is a challenging problem, mainly derived from a) the difficulty of isolating a pure shear wave, given the interference of multiple waves of different types (P, S, even guided) emitted by the transducers and reflected in geometric boundaries, and b) the highly attenuating nature of soft tissular materials. An immediate application, overcoming these drawbacks, is the measurement of changes in cervix stiffness to estimate the gestational age at delivery. The design has been optimized using a finite element model (FEM) and a semi-analytical estimator of the probability of detection (POD) to determine a suitable geometry, materials and generated waves. The technique is based on the time of flight measurement between emitter and receiver, to infer shear wave velocity. Current research is centered in prototype testing and validation. The geometric optimization of the transducer was able to annihilate the compressional wave emission, generating a quite pure shear torsional wave. Currently, mechanical and electromagnetic coupling between emitter and receiver signals are being the research focus. Conclusions: the design overcomes the main described problems. The almost pure shear torsional wave along with the short time of flight avoids the possibility of multiple wave interference. This short propagation distance reduce the effect of attenuation, and allow the emission of very low energies assuring a good biological security for human use. <p
