The Jewish identity is deeply rooted in the covenantal relationship established between God and Abraham, as recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures, and is central to the narrative of the Bible.

Origins and Covenant with Abraham

The Jewish people trace their origins to Abraham, whom God called out of Ur of the Chaldeans to establish a new nation. In Genesis 12:1-3 , God promises Abraham, "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing." This covenant is further elaborated in Genesis 17, where God establishes circumcision as a sign of the covenant and promises that Abraham will be "the father of many nations" (Genesis 17:4).

The Patriarchs and the Twelve Tribes

The Jewish lineage continues through Isaac, the son of promise, and Jacob, later named Israel. Jacob's twelve sons become the progenitors of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. These tribes form the foundation of the nation of Israel, each with its own distinct identity and role within the larger community.

The Exodus and the Law

A pivotal moment in Jewish history is the Exodus from Egypt, where God delivers the Israelites from slavery under the leadership of Moses. This event is commemorated annually in the Jewish festival of Passover. At Mount Sinai, God gives the Law, including the Ten Commandments, to Moses, establishing a theocratic society with specific religious, moral, and civil codes. As stated in Exodus 19:5-6 , God declares, "Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine. And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."

The Promised Land and Monarchy

The Jewish people eventually settle in the Promised Land, Canaan, under the leadership of Joshua. Over time, they establish a monarchy, with King David and his son Solomon representing the zenith of Israel's united kingdom. God's covenant with David, as recorded in 2 Samuel 7:12-16 , promises that his throne will be established forever, a prophecy Christians believe is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

Exile and Return

Due to disobedience and idolatry, the Jewish people experience exile, first with the Assyrian conquest of the northern kingdom of Israel and later with the Babylonian captivity of Judah. The return from exile and the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple under leaders like Ezra and Nehemiah mark a significant period of restoration and religious reform.

Messianic Expectation

Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, there is a recurring theme of a coming Messiah, a descendant of David who will restore Israel and establish God's kingdom. Prophecies such as Isaiah 9:6-7 speak of a child born to reign on David's throne, a hope that is central to Jewish eschatology and fulfilled in the New Testament through Jesus Christ, according to Christian belief.

Jewish Identity in the New Testament

In the New Testament, the Jewish people play a crucial role in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, who is born into a Jewish family and observes Jewish customs and laws. The early Christian church emerges from a Jewish context, with the apostles initially preaching the gospel to Jewish audiences. Romans 1:16 emphasizes this priority: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, then to the Greek."

Modern Jewish Identity

Today, Jewish identity encompasses a wide range of religious and cultural expressions, from Orthodox to Reform Judaism, and includes secular Jews who identify culturally rather than religiously. The Jewish people continue to hold a unique place in biblical prophecy and eschatology, with many Christians believing in the future restoration and salvation of Israel as part of God's redemptive plan.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Jewish
of or belonging to Jews; an epithet applied to their rabbinical legends.
