Il s&rsquo;agira de r&eacute;fl&eacute;chir sur tout discours f&eacute;minin v&eacute;hiculant des id&eacute;es &agrave; propos de la noblesse, provenant d&rsquo;une membre de la noblesse, d&rsquo;une femme ext&eacute;rieure &agrave; celle-ci ou d&rsquo;un personnage f&eacute;minin fictif. Les contributions sont susceptibles d&rsquo;aborder un large &eacute;ventail de sources : trait&eacute;s th&eacute;oriques, sources &eacute;pistolaires ou diaristes, m&eacute;moires, &oelig;uvres litt&eacute;raires, repr&eacute;sentations artistiques et musicales, voire sources orales pour l&rsquo;&eacute;poque contemporaine, etc.</p> </div> <div id="resume-1245721-en" class="tabContent hidden" lang="en" xml:lang="en"> <p style="text-align: left;">This colloquium invites to compare, on the one hand, women&rsquo;s history and, more specifically, women&rsquo;s authorship and expression history without reducing them to the simple field of writing and, on the other hand, aristocracy and the concept of nobility&rsquo;s history in particular. The aim will be to explore any&nbsp;feminine discourse conveying ideas about the nobility, whether from a nobility member, a woman from outside the nobility or a fictional female character. Contributions will likely cover a wide range of sources: theoretical treatises, epistolary or diaristic sources, memoirs, literary works, artistic and musical representations and even oral sources for the contemporary period. </p> </div> </div> <div id="annonce"> <p class="intitule">Annonce</p> <div class="tabMenu"><a href="#annonce-1245721-fr" hreflang="fr" class="active">Français</a>&#32;<a href="#annonce-1245721-en" hreflang="en">English</a>&#32;</div> <div id="annonce-1245721-fr" class="tabContent" lang="fr" xml:lang="fr"> <p style="text-align: left;">Colloque international &agrave; l'Institut catholique de Rennes, 5-6 JUIN 2025</p> <h1>Argumentaire</h1> <p style="text-align: left;">Entre 1637 et 1644, la comtesse d&rsquo;Aranda, Luisa de Padilla y Manrique, publie quatre ouvrages &agrave; la fois th&eacute;oriques et didactiques sur la question de la noblesse. Les trois premiers sont publi&eacute;s sous le nom de son confesseur, mais le dernier l&rsquo;est sous le sien propre. Si le cas de cette autrice de quatre trait&eacute;s moralistes et th&eacute;oriques sur la noblesse est, &agrave; bien des &eacute;gards, exceptionnel, il n&rsquo;est cependant pas isol&eacute; puisque nombre de femmes, appartenant ou non &agrave; l&rsquo;aristocratie, aux &eacute;poques m&eacute;di&eacute;vale, moderne et contemporaine, &agrave; travers diff&eacute;rents types d&rsquo;&eacute;crits et gr&acirc;ce &agrave; d&rsquo;autres supports d&rsquo;expression, ont abord&eacute; la question et pris position dans les r&eacute;flexions et les d&eacute;bats sur ce qu&rsquo;est la noblesse ainsi que sur la fa&ccedil;on dont ses membres devraient se conduire.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">Alors que l&rsquo;histoire des femmes et du genre a mis en lumi&egrave;re les modalit&eacute;s de l&rsquo;agentivit&eacute; f&eacute;minine et que la part f&eacute;minine du groupe aristocratique a &eacute;t&eacute; bien &eacute;tudi&eacute;e, il convient de se demander non seulement comment ces femmes concevaient leur place au sein de ce groupe et au sein de la soci&eacute;t&eacute; dans son ensemble, mais &eacute;galement dans quelle mesure et selon quelles modalit&eacute;s elles &eacute;taient susceptibles de (ou enclines &agrave;) l&rsquo;exprimer.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">Se pose alors la question des d&eacute;bats autour du concept de noblesse, dont les acceptions sont plurielles au fil du temps et dans les diff&eacute;rents espaces politiques europ&eacute;ens. Entendu comme une qualit&eacute; morale et comportementale cens&eacute;e distinguer un groupe &eacute;litaire et constituant la pierre angulaire de &laquo; l&rsquo;id&eacute;e de noblesse &raquo; (Philippe Contamine), il a aussi &eacute;t&eacute; tr&egrave;s progressivement et partiellement encadr&eacute; sur le plan juridique &agrave; partir des XIVe et XVe si&egrave;cles, puis &agrave; l&rsquo;&eacute;poque moderne, au travers des anoblissements, des exemptions fiscales, des privil&egrave;ges divers, etc. Si ces derniers sont peu &agrave; peu remis en cause, abandonn&eacute;s ou abolis dans l&rsquo;espace europ&eacute;en, la persistance de d&eacute;finitions juridiques et d&rsquo;une &laquo; culture d&rsquo;ordre &raquo; (Claude Isabelle Brelot) singuli&egrave;re invite &agrave; ne pas r&eacute;duire la noblesse &agrave; un simple &laquo; ph&eacute;nom&egrave;ne d&rsquo;opinion &raquo; (Adeline Daumard) dans l&rsquo;Europe des longs XIXe et XXe si&egrave;cles.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">L&rsquo;importance donn&eacute;e par de nombreux th&eacute;oriciens de la noblesse &agrave; la dimension h&eacute;r&eacute;ditaire invite naturellement &agrave; s&rsquo;interroger sur la place que les femmes s&rsquo;attribuaient dans le processus de transmission de la qualit&eacute; ou du statut nobiliaire, l&rsquo;ascendance maternelle, suffisante aux Xe-XIe si&egrave;cles, &eacute;tant progressivement battue en br&egrave;che dans une large partie de l&rsquo;Europe, voire presque totalement invisibilis&eacute;e en France, o&ugrave; seule l&rsquo;h&eacute;r&eacute;dit&eacute; masculine rend noble. Elle suppose aussi de s&rsquo;int&eacute;resser aux discours f&eacute;minins sur les m&eacute;canismes de transmission des biens, des titres et des offices au sein des familles nobles. Elle invite &eacute;galement &agrave; se pencher sur la perception que ces femmes avaient de leurs r&ocirc;les, que ce soit dans l&rsquo;espace public (action politique, gouvernance domaniale) ou sur le plan domestique (gestion, &eacute;ducation de la nouvelle g&eacute;n&eacute;ration), en prenant en compte non seulement le poids des assignations de genre, mais aussi leurs &eacute;ventuelles contestations et recompositions. Se pose en outre la question du regard des femmes d&rsquo;origine non-noble sur le groupe social qu&rsquo;elles int&egrave;grent par mariage ou par anoblissement, ainsi que de celui des femmes nobles ayant prononc&eacute; des v&oelig;ux religieux.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">L&rsquo;expression des femmes sur la noblesse am&egrave;ne, bien s&ucirc;r, &agrave; questionner leur auctorialit&eacute;, la l&eacute;gitimit&eacute; &agrave; laquelle elles pr&eacute;tendent sur ce sujet, l&rsquo;&eacute;ventuelle sp&eacute;cificit&eacute; genr&eacute;e de leurs arguments et de leurs positionnements ou, au contraire, leur reprise de points de vue et de raisonnements d&rsquo;auteurs masculins &ndash; sans exclure le possible recours &agrave; des voix f&eacute;minines, r&eacute;elles ou fictives, par des hommes.</p> <p style="text-align: left;">Les &laquo; voix &raquo; de femmes sur la noblesse renvoient &agrave; tout l&rsquo;&eacute;ventail des modes d&rsquo;expression, depuis le trait&eacute; savant jusqu&rsquo;au blog. Au travers d&rsquo;&eacute;tudes de cas, de comparaisons ou de vues d&rsquo;ensemble, on pourra chercher &agrave; comprendre les situations sociales dans lesquelles des femmes ont pris la plume &ndash; ou se sont saisies d&rsquo;autres supports &ndash; pour prendre part &agrave; la r&eacute;flexion sur la noblesse, &agrave; mesurer l&rsquo;inscription de ces prises d&rsquo;&eacute;criture &ndash; ou de parole &ndash; parmi les dispositifs juridiques, les m&oelig;urs et les usages du temps, ou encore &agrave; contextualiser les modalit&eacute;s de circulation et de publicisation de ces points de vue et &agrave; analyser leurs enjeux politiques, sociaux et genr&eacute;s. On pourra mettre en lumi&egrave;re les d&eacute;pendances envers d&rsquo;autres acteurs, masculins ou f&eacute;minins, de ces expressions f&eacute;minines et de leur diffusion. Ce cadre temporel et g&eacute;ographique doit amener &agrave; d&eacute;gager aussi bien les continuit&eacute;s que les &eacute;volutions et les sp&eacute;cificit&eacute;s chronologiques et r&eacute;gionales. The first three were published under the name of her confessor, but the last one was under her name.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">While this authoress of four moralistic and theoretical treatises on nobility is, in many ways, exceptional, she is not an isolated case since many women, both aristocratic and non-aristocratic, in medieval, modern and contemporary times, through different types of writing and other means of expression, have discussed the matter and assumed positions in the reflections and debates on what nobility is and how its members should conduct themselves.</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">While the history of women and gender studies has shed light on women&rsquo;s agency, and the female part of the aristocratic group has been well studied, we need to ask not only how these women conceived of their place within this group and within society as a whole, but also to what extent and in what ways they were likely to (or inclined to) express it.</p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-GB">This raises the issue of the debates surrounding the concept of nobility, which meanings have been multiple over time and in different European political spaces. Understood as a moral and behavioural quality supposed to distinguish an elite group and constituting the cornerstone of the &lsquo;idea of nobility&rsquo; (Philippe Contamine), it was also very gradually and partially framed in legal terms from the 14th and 15th centuries onwards, and then in the modern era, through ennoblements, tax exemptions, various privileges, etc. Although these privileges were gradually questioned, abandoned or abolished in Europe, the persistence of legal definitions and a singular &lsquo;culture of order&rsquo; (Claude Isabelle Brelot) suggests that the nobility should not be reduced to a mere &lsquo;phenomenon of opinion&rsquo; (Adeline Daumard) in the Europe of the long 19th and 20th centuries.</span></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-GB">The importance given by many theorists of nobility to the hereditary dimension naturally raises the question of the place that women gave themselves in the process of transmitting the quality or status of nobility since maternal descent, which was sufficient in the 10th-11th centuries, was progressively undermined in a large part of Europe, and even almost totally ignored in France, where only male heredity made a noble. It involves looking women&rsquo;s views on the mechanisms for transmitting property, titles and offices within noble families. It also requires us to look at how these women perceived their roles, whether in the public arena (political action, estate governance) or in the domestic sphere (management, education of the next generation), taking into account not only the weight of gender assignments, but also the ways in which they were contested and reshaped. It also raises the question of how women of non-noble origin view the social group they join through marriage or ennoblement and how noble women who have taken religious vows view it.</span></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-GB">Women&rsquo;s expression on nobility naturally leads to question their authorship, the legitimacy they claim on this subject, their arguments and positions&rsquo; possible gendered specificity or, on the contrary, their adoption of the viewpoints and reasoning of male authors - without excluding the use of female voices, real or fictional, by men.</span></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-GB">Women&rsquo;s &lsquo;voices&rsquo; on the nobility cover a range of modes of expression, from scholarly treatises to blogs. Through case studies, comparisons and overviews, we will seek to understand the social situations in which women took up the pen - or other media - to take part in the debate on nobility, to measure the extent to which this writing - or speaking - was part of the legal systems, mores and customs of the time, and to contextualise how these points of view were circulated and publicised, and to analyse the political, social and gendered issues at stake. These female expressions&rsquo; dependence on other actors, whether male or female and their dissemination will be highlighted. Finally, there is the question of the audience, reception, uses and temporality of these female points of view on the nobility and their means of expression.</span></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-GB">This colloquium invites us to compare, on the one hand, women&rsquo;s history and, more specifically, women&rsquo;s authorship and expression history without reducing them to the simple field of writing and, on the other hand, aristocracy and the concept of nobility&rsquo;s history in particular. The aim will be to explore any&nbsp;feminine discourse conveying ideas about the nobility, whether from a nobility member, a woman from outside the nobility or a fictional female character. To capture changes over time and encourage comparative reflection, this colloquium will be transperiodic, covering Europe from the medieval period to the present day. </span></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-GB">This temporal and geographical framework should enable us to identify continuities or developments and specific chronological and regional features.
