Then they renamed that place (which is near the Jordan) Abel-mizraim, for they said, &#8220;This is a place of deep mourning for these Egyptians.&#8221;<td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><span class="btext2">When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, &#8220;This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.&#8221; Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim; it is beyond the Jordan.</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><span class="btext1">So Jacob&#8217;s sons did as he had commanded them.<td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><span class="btext2">Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them,</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><span class="btext1">They carried his body to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the cave that Abraham had bought as a permanent burial site from Ephron the Hittite. I will continue to take care of you and your children.&#8221; So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them. The Death of Joseph<td width="50%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><span class="btext2">So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.&#8221; Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.</span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="50%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><span class="btext1">So Joseph and his brothers and their families continued to live in Egypt.
