In this respect, ‘Social Network Analysis’ (SNA) offers a range of analytical tools enabling systematic examination of large and complex data-sets. Still, digital and mathematical tools for identifying, describing, and explaining social relations have only by exception been applied to material from Ancient Egypt. By means of studying the archive of Horos, son of Nechouthes through a distinct network approach, this talk aims to demonstrate the relevance of SNA, also within the historical field of Egyptology. Drawing on specific examples, it argue that core concepts of network theory may challenge or compliment more traditional methodologies, with the potential of leading to increased knowledge.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Reconsidering a Family-Archive from Pathyris (134-88 B.C.): a Network Analythical Approach&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:50418417,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/25367769/Reconsidering_a_Family_Archive_from_Pathyris_134_88_B_C_a_Network_Analythical_Approach&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/25367769/Reconsidering_a_Family_Archive_from_Pathyris_134_88_B_C_a_Network_Analythical_Approach"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="32922262" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/32922262/Social_and_Economic_Life_in_the_Ptolemaic_Military_Camp_of_Pathyris_Tackling_Complexity_by_Means_of_Formal_Network_Analysis">Social and Economic Life in the Ptolemaic Military Camp of Pathyris: Tackling Complexity by Means of Formal Network Analysis</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="4766701" href="https://helsinki.academia.edu/LenaTambs">Lena Tambs</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Attempts to reconstruct socio-economic life often equals striving to tackle social and economic complexity. Crucial to their success, is a methodological approach enabling systematic examination of large and diverse data sets, allowing the researcher to maintain the overview. At least since the 1970s, network analytical methods have gained some recognition within historical fields. Ancient Egypt represents a particularly well-suited case study for network approaches. Still, formal network analysis has only by exception been applied to material and texts from ancient Egypt. The current talk aims to critically discuss the applicability - and usability - of ‘Social Network Analysis’ within the field of Egyptology. In doing so, the author introduces her PhD-project, ‘Socio-Economic Relations in Ptolemaic Pathyris: A Network Analytical Approach to a Bicultural Community’. Demonstrations and visualizations are generated from preserved Greek and Demotic textual sources from the site.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Social and Economic Life in the Ptolemaic Military Camp of Pathyris: Tackling Complexity by Means of Formal Network Analysis&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:53056775,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/32922262/Social_and_Economic_Life_in_the_Ptolemaic_Military_Camp_of_Pathyris_Tackling_Complexity_by_Means_of_Formal_Network_Analysis&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/32922262/Social_and_Economic_Life_in_the_Ptolemaic_Military_Camp_of_Pathyris_Tackling_Complexity_by_Means_of_Formal_Network_Analysis"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="4641790" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/4641790/Networks_and_Neighbours_A_Symposium_on_Early_Medieval_Correlations">Networks &amp; Neighbours: A Symposium on Early Medieval Correlations</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="5873248" href="https://leeds.academia.edu/MichaelBurrows">Michael Burrows</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Networks \u0026 Neighbours: A Symposium on Early Medieval Correlations&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:31990416,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/4641790/Networks_and_Neighbours_A_Symposium_on_Early_Medieval_Correlations&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/4641790/Networks_and_Neighbours_A_Symposium_on_Early_Medieval_Correlations"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="36015655" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/36015655/Complex_network_analysis_in_Old_Kingdom_society_a_nepotism_case_by_Veronika_Dul%C3%ADkov%C3%A1_Radek_Ma%C5%99%C3%ADk_">Complex network analysis in Old Kingdom society: a nepotism case (by Veronika Dulíková – Radek Mařík)</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="4730136" href="https://cuni.academia.edu/VeronikaDul%C3%ADkov%C3%A1">Veronika Dulíková</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Abusir and Saqqara in the year 2015, 2017</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The current state of Egyptological research faces a problem to process the huge volume of data. Researchers have dealt with the datasets consisting of thousands entities. Such a volume cannot be evaluated efficiently and rigorously using a traditional manual manner of paper and pencil. Although methods of complex networks (CNA) have been used for the quantification of a number of historical aspects, nobody has yet applied CNA to the Old Kingdom context. This paper proposes a new approach based on the method of complex network analysis which provides new possibilities for the better understanding of the Old Kingdom social and administrative developments. Were these networks perceived by ancient societies and actors as a means to perform and assert social, personal and group identities? Covering various periods and geo-cultural areas from Iran to the western Mediterranean, with a strong focus on classical antiquity, the papers collected here approach the topic of network as resources in three different but interrelated thematic domains: the interaction between societies and the natural environment (socio-natural networks), the transmission of knowledge and habitus (networks of knowledge and power) and religious interactions (sacred landscape). The social values that communities attribute to the networks they are embedded in are opened up to new interpretative layers, dynamics and scales. Looking at networks as resources changes our perspective on both terms of the equation. On the one hand, ancient networks are reframed in their relational and social contexts and linked to their actors’ intentions and perceptions. On the other hand, the properties of specifi c networks, such as fl uidity, redundancy and the strength and fragility of relationships, shed new light on resources and resource-related socio-cultural dynamics.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;R. The analysis of networks and the study of the past (Archaeology and History) The exploration of linkages between individuals, groups, localities or objects with the help of the concepts and tools of (Social) Network Analysis (NA) has boomed in the last decade; also in historical and archaeological studies, the number of researchers working with network-analytical methods has significantly increased. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scholars from various historical disciplines as well as beyond who are working or interested in this field in order to discuss the possibilities of, experiences with and problems of NA for the study of the past. As keynote speaker, Tom Brughmans from the Archaeological Computing Research Group, University of Southampton (UK) will present his project on Archaeological Network Analysis; he has established an online blog for this new field of archaeological research (http://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/) as well as a network of researchers interested in NA. Most recently, he has organized a session on Archaeological and Historical NA for the “39th Annual Conference of Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology“ (CAA 2011) in Beijing (China; cf. http://archaeologicalnetworks.wordpress.com/caa-2011/). After the presentation of Tom Brughmans, the research on NA at the Institut für Byzanzforschung will be briefly presented. Then there will be opportunity for all participants to present and discuss their experiences with NA (participants are invited to briefly – 5 minutes – present their ongoing projects– laptop and video-beamer will be provided). In particular we would like to discuss central questions of Archaeological and Historical NA such as: How can NA be applied to different disciplines of historical studies and different sources (objects, documents)? What is the significance of network analytical results from a historical point of view? How can we cope with fragmentary source evidence and incomplete samples? Is it possible to use the research on large scale and complex modern day networks for the study of the past? A summary of the results of our discussion will be presented online afterwards.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Invitation: Connecting the dots. A brief discussion of graph theoretic applications in archaeology reveals how graph visualization and analysis was used since the 1960’s in a very similar way to later network analysis applications but did not seem to have influenced the more widespread adoption of network techniques over the past decade. These recent archaeological applications have been strongly influenced by two academic traditions, social network analysis and socio-physics. The most influential and promising techniques and models adopted from these traditions are critically discussed. This review reveals some general trends which are considered to be the result of two critical issues that will need to be addressed in future archaeological network analysis: (1) a general unawareness of the historicity and diversity of formal network methods both within and outside the archaeological discipline has resulted in a very limited methodological scope; (2) the adoption or development of network methods has very rarely been driven by specific archaeological research questions and is dominated by a few popular models and techniques, which has in some cases resulted in a routinized explanatory process. This review illustrates, however, the great potential of formal network methods for archaeology and argues that, if this potential is to be applied in a critical way, a broad multi-disciplinary scope is necessary and specific archaeological research contexts should dominate applications.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Brughmans, T. 2013.
