& MSP Agent Installation</h1> <p>If you’re managing multiple sites or you’re an MSP who needs to keep separate inventories of your clients, you can easily do that with your Spiceworks Inventory online. We’ll go over how to set that up here.</p> <h2 id="different-types-of-agents">Different types of agents</h2> <p>The first thing you’re going to need to do to have a well organized inventory is to understand the difference between the two types of agents.</p> <h3 id="scanning-agent">Scanning Agent</h3> <p>The scanning agent will give you an overview of the devices on your network. It only needs to be installed on a single computer (desktop will work, but server is best so it will stay online) and will scan an IP range for higher level info like operating system, open ports, IP address, etc. This agent is also referred to as the IP Scanner and lives in the same area of the Community as Inventory online. This agent will also function as a Collection agent for the device it’s installed on and gather data for Inventory online and Connectivity Dashboard.</p> <h3 id="collection-agent">Collection agent</h3> <p>The Collection agent scans for detailed information about your computers and can keep track of their connectivity to web services, applications, and IP addresses. You would install the agent on each computer in your network, then they would scan the computer and send the results to your Inventory online dashboard, where you can see the results. The scan will then repeat on a daily basis and update your inventory. The Collection agent also connects with the Connectivity Dashboard. An important thing to consider is that the name of the device where the Scanning agent is installed is what’s going to show up on your Inventory online as your filter to see that site/client. So if you have a VM available, you could name it in such a way as to clarify the client or site. You should also try to install it on a server (physical or virtual) that will always be on. That way, the scanner is able to always get current info and keep your Inventory online information accurate.</p> <p>To install, you’ll just log in to your <a href="https://apps.spiceworks.com/tools/device-inventory/" title="Opens a new window" target="_blank">Inventory online<span class="external-link-icon">Opens a new window <em class="fas fa-external-link-alt" aria-hidden="true"></em></span></a>, click the <strong>Add devices…</strong> button, select <strong>Install agents on devices</strong>, and choose <strong>Download a Scanning Agent</strong>. You’ll see your site key on the next screen. This is the site key you will use on every agent (don’t worry, though, it’ll show every time you download an agent).</p> <p>For more information on the Scanning agent, you can <a href="https://spiceworks.com/support/ip-scanner/docs" title="Opens a new window" target="_blank">check this page out <span class="external-link-icon">Opens a new window <em class="fas fa-external-link-alt" aria-hidden="true"></em></span></a>.</p> <h3 id="configure-scanner">Configure your Scanning agents</h3> <p>Now it’s time to use the Scanning agents to get a basic idea of what’s on each network. You do this by adding IPv4 ranges for the scanner to search. Some sample ranges include:</p> <ul> <li>192.168.1.1-254</li> <li>192.168.1-5.1-254</li> <li>192.168.1.12,14,15,60</li> </ul> <p>You’ll be able to set these ranges when you first install the Scanning agent, but if you need to update them later, you can do so by clicking the <strong>Add devices…</strong> button in your Inventory online dashboard, then selecting <strong>Scan IP ranges</strong>.</p> <p>You’ll want to make sure that every device you intend to manage is covered by these scan ranges, because next we’re going to be installing Collection agents and we need the device to already have been scanned by a Scanning agent.</p> <p>If you’ve made any updates to your scan ranges and have not run a new scan, go ahead and do so before the next step.</p> <h3 id="collection-agent">Install Collection agents</h3> <p>Now you can roll out your Collection agents to the workstations and servers at each client or site. You can either <a href="https://spiceworks.com/support/inventory-online/docs#installing-the-agent" title="Opens a new window" target="_blank">install them individually <span class="external-link-icon">Opens a new window <em class="fas fa-external-link-alt" aria-hidden="true"></em></span></a>or deploy to multiple devices using <a href="https://spiceworks.com/support/inventory-online/docs/deploy-agent" title="Opens a new window" target="_blank">these instructions <span class="external-link-icon">Opens a new window <em class="fas fa-external-link-alt" aria-hidden="true"></em></span></a>.</p> <p>To have agents from all of your clients show up in a single Device Inventory view, you need to install all of the agents using the same site key. If you want to separate the Device Inventory on a per-client basis, you’ll have to create a separate Spiceworks user account for logging in to Device Inventory for each client, and then use the unique site key to install the agent for each client.</p> <h3 id="why">Why do it this way?</h3> <p>At this point there’s no way to specify a location manually, and by the nature of an online portal, there’s no location determined. So, by having an IP Scanner agent finding the device first, then a Collection agent scanning the computer for more information, the records are determined to be the same computer and the information merged. Because the system allows you to filter results by Scanning agent, you have, in effect, created a location/client filter.</p> <p>If the Scanning agent doesn’t find the computer, then it won’t be included in the results for that location/client. So you’ll need to make sure your IP ranges are properly configured.</p> <h3 id="filter">Check out your results</h3> <p>Now that you’ve got everything installed, scanning, and communicating back to your Inventory online, it’s time to check out your results.</p> <p>When you log in to <a href="https://apps.spiceworks.com/tools/device-inventory/" title="Opens a new window" target="_blank">Inventory online<span class="external-link-icon">Opens a new window <em class="fas fa-external-link-alt" aria-hidden="true"></em></span></a>, you’ll see a list in the left-most column. This will include global preset filters like <strong>Devices with Agents</strong>, <strong>Potential Duplicates</strong>, and <strong>Devices with tickets</strong>. These filters will not break things up by site/client. Below those views, you’ll find your Scanning agent device names.
