Now you need to enter your company name, and, boom, you’re in…</p> <p>After you’ve registered and created your connectivity dashboard, you’ll be the only admin with access to the dashboard. Now you can start inviting your coworkers:</p> <ul> <li>Click <strong>Invite</strong> in the top-right corner of the page.</li> <li>Now you’ll need to click <strong>Invite New User</strong>.</li> <li>Enter the full name and email address of the ivitee.</li> <li>Click <strong>Save</strong> next to what you just entered.</li> <li>They’ll now be emailed an invitation to access your Connectivity Dashboard.</li> </ul> <h2 id="installing-the-agent">Installing the agent</h2> <p>You can download the agent installer using the <strong>Agent Download</strong> link in the top nav bar after you’ve logged in to the dashboard. You’ll need to deploy and install this agent on each computer you want to keep track of. You can learn more about agent deployment <a href="https://www.spiceworks.com/support/inventory-online/docs/deploy-agent">here</a>.</p> <h3 id="agent-system-requirements">Agent system requirements</h3> <p>The device(s) that run the Connectivity Dashboard agent(s) performing the connectivity tests need to meet the system requirements documented in this page:</p> <p><a href="https://www.spiceworks.com/support/inventory-online/docs#system-requirements">Agent System Requirements</a></p> <h2 id="using">Using the Connectivity Dashboard</h2> <h3 id="agent-connectivity-checks">Agent connectivity checks</h3> <p>The agent will perform its connectivity checks once each minute against each of the applications you have configured in the dashboard by one of two methods (that you choose):</p> <ul class="bulleted-list"> <li><strong>Ping:</strong> If you configure the dashboard to check an application using ping, the agent will ping the application once every minute.</li> <li><strong>HTTP/HTTPS:</strong> If you configure the Dashboard to check an application using http or https, the agent will issue an HTTP GET once a minute. If the agent receives a 2xx response code before the timeout (hardcoded as 10 seconds), that response time is recorded. If the agent receives a 4xx/5xx response code, or the GET times out, the response is recorded as failed.</li> </ul> <h3 id="agent-check-in">Agent check-in</h3> <p>Each agent will report in every 60 seconds (to resolve.spiceworks.com) to update your dashboard with:</p> <ul> <li>agent device online/offline status</li> <li>each configured service’s online/offline status</li> </ul> <p>To minimize false-positives and momentary disconnects, the agents will send up the average of the previous three data points each minute.</p> <p>During the check-in, the agent will request your account’s configuration (new config.json), allowing it to begin monitoring new services you may have added to the dashboard.</p> <h3 id="dashboard">Dashboard</h3> <p>You can sort the list of devices by clicking the header for any column. Each application’s response time is shown in milliseconds, and tagged with a predetermined color as a visual aide. Currently you cannot control the color thresholds.</p> <p>You configure which applications the dashboard monitors using the add application button (+). The IP address (IPv4), hostname, or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) can be monitored using either ping (ICMP) or http/https requests. The dashboard only displays the latest application state – there is no log of historical info.</p> <p>The drop-down menu for each device allows you to set <strong>Active</strong> or <strong>Standby Mode</strong>, as well as <strong>Uninstall user agent</strong>.</p> <ul class="bulleted-list"> <li><strong>Active and Standby Mode:</strong> Setting a device to <strong>Standby</strong> will hide the device’s status on the dashboard. You’ll want to do this for devices that will be offline for a while (for a known reason), so you won’t want to see their application statuses. On the next check in the agent device will receive <em>Standby</em> configuration from the Dashboard, which instructs the agent to dial back check in frequency from one minute to 10 minutes.</li> <li><strong>Uninstall user agent:</strong> This will immediately remove the device from your dashboard and the agent will automatically uninstall from the device. During uninstall the agent configuration and the device’s unique identifier are destroyed. If you want to save the config and identifier, uninstall the agent as mentioned <a href="#uninstall">above</a>.</li> </ul> <h3 id="monitoring-alerts">Monitoring Alerts</h3> <p>The Connectivity Dashboard offers you the ability to receive email alerts when your configured targets become unreachable (show up as red). Targets are the <em>columns</em> that you have configured in your dashboard.</p> <p>An alert will be sent when an agent (your <em>rows</em>) performs a test (ICMP or HTTP) against a target and that test fails 3 times in a row. Agents report test results every minute.</p> <p>The section below describes each combination of tests and the resulting alert logic. 1 indicates a passed test, where 0 indicates a failed test:</p> <ul> <li>1-1-1 → no alert</li> <li>1-0-1 → no alert</li> <li>1-1-0 → no alert</li> <li>1-0-0 → no alert</li> <li>0-0-0 → <strong>alert</strong></li> <li>0-0-1 → no alert</li> <li>0-1-0 → no alert</li> <li>0-1-1 → no alert</li> </ul> <p>A “reset” alert email is sent as soon as the service receives an agent report indicating a target has become again, after a period of unavailability.</p> <p>A disconnected agent (shows as a horizontal black row) does not report the state of the connectivity of the targets, and therefore does not trigger alerts nor reset emails. Agents can be disconnected for a number of reasons, including if the agent device is simply powered off.</p> <p>While all agents perform the tests (and report on the color of the cells in their row), only the ones that you have alert-enabled will send email alerts. To alert-enable an agent, hover over its name and click on the bell icon that appears.</p> <figure class="article-thumbnail"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.spiceworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/24133617/alert-bell-ui.png" alt="alert-bell"></figure> <p>You can globally enable/disable alerting from all alert-enabled using the global toggle. Disabling alerts globally is temporary; when you re-enable alerts, all of your previously alert-enabled agents are active again. You can also use the dropdown box to select which users will receive alerts. The list of users available in the dropdown matches your invited users list.</p> <figure class="article-thumbnail"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.spiceworks.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/24133620/alert-global-toggle.png" alt="alert-toggle"></figure> <p>We suggest the following guidelines when deciding which agents you want to make “alert-enabled”:</p> <ul> <li>Don’t set <em>all</em> of your agents to be alert-enabled. When a target is unreachable it will likely be so from all agents. This will limit the number of duplicate email alerts you’ll receive.</li> <li>Select one agent to alert, per site, if you have multiple physical sites. If all of your sites send you one alert, the issue is likely at the app level. If only one site sends the alert, the issue is likely in the network path between the site and the target. All of this is precious information to put you on the track of the problem location.</li> <li>Configure email alerts for your agents that tend to be online 24×7 as this will give you 24×7 monitoring. Alternatively, configuring email alerts on an agent running on a workstation that goes offline every night would result in unwanted alert notifications.</li> </ul> <h2 id="data">What data is collected by the Connectivity Dashboard agent?</h2> <p>After you have installed the agent on a Windows device it will begin monitoring application connectivity state changes and latency. In addition to this, the agent also collects device and network info. Some of this data is then displayed to you in the Spiceworks Connectivity Dashboard. The Connectivity Dashboard will be collecting the following information:</p> <h3 id="windows-workstations">Windows workstations</h3> <ul> <li>IP address</li> <li>MAC address</li> <li>hostname</li> <li>operating system name</li> <li>operating system type/architecture</li> <li>connectivity from the workstation to the application(s) that you have configured (success/failure and latency)</li> </ul> <h3 id="network">Network</h3> <ul> <li>domain name (if applicable)</li> <li>network’s public IP Address</li> <li>network location (city and state)</li> <li>network ISP name</li> <li>autonomous system number</li> </ul> <h2 id="where-stored">Where is this information stored?</h2> <p>All the data collected by the agents is stored securely on the Spiceworks servers. You can request your account be closed and device data deleted. Upon deletion the device data is permanently erased from the Connectivity Dashboard, and will be irrecoverable once our backups expire. Should you wish to close your account you can email support@spiceworks.com with a request. Please note that there is some data that will have been anonymized into aggregate datasets. This information is not identifiable as related to your account, and therefore cannot be deleted if your account is closed.</p> <h2 id="security">Security</h2> <h3 id="data-communication">Data communication</h3> <p>The Connectivity Dashboard is remotely accessible in two ways. You and your team access the service in a browser, and agent devices access the service directly when they register and check in. In both cases communication is restricted to HTTPS only.</p> <p>We use current security protocols (SSL/TLS) to ensure both browser sessions (viewing the Connectivity Dashboard as an admin) and agent check in are secure.</p> <p>The agent cannot be configured to use non-secure URLs, so even if the agent configuration is manipulated to use HTTP, the agent service will refuse to check in over a non-secure connection.</p> <h3 id="agent-service">Agent service</h3> <p>All of the agent’s modules are checked at startup and must be signed, so it isn’t possible to sideload unauthorized modules (.dll files) that were not created by Spiceworks (either shipped with the agent or downloaded from Spiceworks by the agent).</p> <p>An agent’s service configuration and application ping/HTTP check history is stored in the install directory.
