his famous chronicle of the 1920s Only Yesterday, contended that women’s “growing independence” had accelerated a “revolution in manners and morals” in American society (95). The 1920s did bring significant changes to the lives of American women. World War I, industrialization, suffrage, urbanization, and birth control increased women’s economic, political, and sexual freedom. However, with these advances came pressure to conform to powerful but contradictory archetypes. Women were expected to be both flapper and wife, sex object and mother. Furthermore, Hollywood and the emerging “science” of advertising increasingly tied conceptions of femininity to …show more content…

There were few female doctors, lawyers, politicians, or professors, to be sure, but the list of acceptable jobs for women had lengthened.

World War I also provided women with the means to finally achieve suffrage. Groups such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association, led by Carrie Chapman Catt, enthusiastically joined the war effort, thereby intertwining patriotism and women’s rights. After the House of Representatives passed the women’s suffrage amendment in January 1918, President Wilson told the nation, “We have made partners of the women in this war. Shall we admit them only to a partnership of suffering and sacrifice and toil and not to a partnership of privilege and right?” (James and Wells, 67-68). True political equality did not result from the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment—very few female candidates were elected in the 1920s—but, in the words of Allen, “the winning of the suffrage had its effect. It consolidated woman’s position as man’s equal” (96).

The 1920s also brought American women increased personal and sexual freedoms. By doing so, they would be endorsing products and their respective companies. Since many flappers engaged in enticing leisure activities previously limited to men; including smoking, drinking, and dancing the Black Bottom and Charleston, stories from their experiences would be very interesting for young women in New York to hear. Everything from flappers’ career ventures to their casual relationship endeavors could inspire the audience to assert their independence and choose the lifestyle they wanted. Adopting a boxy, unisex silhouette that flattened the appearance of their curves defined the flapper’s unusual style of sexualizing androgyny. The flapper’s image challenged traditional values by introducing the idea that women were fearless in their battle for equal rights, thus representing the active feminist movement of the 1920s to empower the radio show’s audience.

1044 Words

5 Pages

Decent Essays

Decent Essays

Analysis of Josuha Zeita´s Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern

954 Words

4 Pages

Analysis of Josuha Zeita´s Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern

The flapper was the harbinger of a radical change in American culture. The first advantage, the war enabled suffragist to mobilize and diminish the ancient argument that women shouldn’t vote because they didn’t bear arms (Keyssar 2000, p. 216). The war’s second advantage was the mobilization of women allowed them to stress the importance of their role and pressured congressional support for the 19th amendment (Keyssar 2000, p. 217). The women of America began to evolve in the 1920s, adding new styles to our fashion industry and changing the way women dress, act, and are portrayed in society for generations. Women were viewed before the 1920’s as innocent housewives, that made little to no money, as they often relied on their husbands’ for income. Women also had little to no rights, such as voting rights, which many women began to protest. Women of the 1920’s through the 1930’s influenced and impacted society by transforming their looks from innocent housewives to a sexually liberated generation of women, increasing the working rate to twenty-five percent by working in factories and the telemarketing business, and participating in the Women’s Suffrage Movement in which they protested for their rights which then influenced the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment.

1305 Words

6 Pages

Decent Essays

Decent Essays

The Role Of Flappers In The 1920's

954 Words

4 Pages

The Role Of Flappers In The 1920's

In the 1830’s, the ideology of a true woman was to be morally and physically pure, godly, and beautiful (Dilkes-Mullins). For instance, women became active in expressing their views against alcohol and pushed for the prohibition and temperance. Organizations such as The Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), argued that alcohol led to societal problems. Male and female reformers banned together to argue that alcohol was immoral and causing a negative impact on women. Women, if married, would experience an abusive, violent drunk husband who neglected his family and gambled his money away. Thus, the evils of alcohol became part of the progressive agenda that eventually led to the passage of the 18th amendment. Along with prohibition, women also took active roles in acquiring suffrage. In “The Politics of Good Government,” Gayle Gullett argued that in the California Women’s Movement built a nonpartisan broad suffrage umbrella that sought to enhance their “special interests.” Middle-class women assured their male allies that women’s enfranchisement was essential to progressivism. Furthermore, middle-and working-class women argued that suffrage would not only protect working women but women in general. Working class men and women also united to seek reform. Thus, through these heterogeneous groups, the California Women’s Movement built a unified coalition that led to women’s suffrage in 1911. The 19 amendment that was ratified on August 1920 gave the right of women to vote and the impact of World War I resulted in women questioning traditional morals and values, becoming rebellious. When men left for the war it caused women to have new jobs such as working in factories. Also, “the number of women attending college rose to 10% of the population by the end of the 1920's." Due to women having the opportunity to have jobs and go to college women became more mobile. The corset limited women to be mobile in this era which caused the production of coresets to quickly decline. Less women wearing corset made their figure to be more boyish and straight. The women of this era was called the Flappers, free spirited women, representing the new change of how women looked. The Flappers “lacked hips, breasts, and a defined waist”. They would dress in dresses above their knee and ankle showing more legs and having bare arms. They would also stray away from having long hair and cut their hair into a bob to symbolize freedom and independency. As a reason of women questioning traditional values they began to drink, smoke and be more sexual in this era. The 1920’s was also the age of Jazz which influenced women to go out and dance and women having more flamboyant and exuberant moves. During this time period, women started dressing different, leaving the house, getting jobs, and gaining rights. On top of all of that, they had a bigger role in education, they began taking parts in politics, and divorce became more of a common thing. This may not seem like a big deal to people today, but this was very important at the time. Prior, women had next to no rights. They lived to wait on and please their husbands. Women rarely even left the house. This time period could be said to have paved the way for modern day feminism and women’s roles. This was the time period when they began to be free and stop worrying about how society thought they should live. However, the question still remains: Did the changing roles of women in the 1920s really have a significant effect on women’s roles today? In the next few pages, one will be given examples of women’s role before, during, and after the 1920s. In each paragraph, the roles, rights, impacts, and more that women had at these times will be explained. To conclude, a comparison on how women were thought to act in these different time periods will be made in order to come up with an answer for the question stated above.

1590 Words

7 Pages

Better Essays

Better Essays

Emmeline Pankhurst Research Paper

1874 Words

8 Pages

Emmeline Pankhurst Research Paper

Be that as it may, it wasn't until after the calamitous occasions of World War One that acknowledgment of women critical commitment to the war exertion was perceived, that women gained actual ground. The appalling clash depleted organizations and plants of their labor, as most working-age men went off to war. Women filled parts in weapons industrial facilities, transport, therapeutic administrations, and managerial positions. Interestingly, ladies worked in employments that had beforehand been the elite space of men. The United States allowed women beyond 21 1920 years old in 1920, through the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, drafted 40 years prior by Suffragettes Susan B.
