reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are technologies that are very attractive to the learners since they offer new experiences when learning about the real world. Those technologies can be easily incorporated in the classroom when used with mobile devices that learners already possess. In this paper, we explore advantages and disadvantages of using virtual and augmented reality applications in educational settings. We also analyze pedagogical approaches that underpin the development of AR applications used in education. The main goal is to present a practical approach to the development of AR applications aimed at the secondary or primary level students. The paper describes the process of developing AR application content with the tool Aurasma Studio. We have compared most commonly used technologies and tools for development of augmented reality applications. Unity is a part of the advanced computer graphics technologies that improve contemporary computerized life with ordinarily used games and various mobile applications. Unity is employing to develop 2D and 3D applications and to deploy them on different platforms. This article aims to describe the development of a mobile application with guided AR under the fundamentals of User Centered Design (UCD) in order to be integrated into a VLE. The development strategy consisted of using the UCD and in its phases making use of tools such as: surveys for the collection of information, Quality Function Deployment to identify and prioritize requirements, AR technology for prototyping and finally usability tests to identify design problems. As a result, it was possible to demonstrate the viability of this procedure in the development of interfaces of this type, considering that the resources that contextualize the needs and tastes of its users can provide better facilities and motivation within their learning. Nowadays, there are AR platforms that allow educators to build AR experiences for their students. Most of these tools are not free and have specific domain orientation, allowing instructors to use them for specific domains and courses. The main aim of this study is to provide details on the approach, design and development frameworks that developers have to follow in order to build a general-purpose educational AR tool. The available technologies will be presented and an optimum approach and design will be proposed. In addition, this study presents the architecture and the adopted technologies of the general-purpose educational AR platform ARTutor (Version 3), a free tool for educators and their students. Compared to other AR platforms, ARTutor is a completely free and easy-to-use tool. With ARTutor, educators can create augmented books and add virtual content on top of printed material. The new version of ARTutor is based on state-of-the-art technologies such as Google's ARCore and Apple's ARKit.
