The psalmist's cry to God indicates a personal relationship and reliance on divine help. The expression of despair is common in the Psalms, where the writers often pour out their hearts to God in times of distress (e.g., Psalm 22:1). This mirrors the human condition of feeling overwhelmed by life's challenges, yet it also demonstrates faith in God's ability to provide comfort and deliverance. The psalmist's use of "my God" signifies a personal covenant relationship, reminiscent of the way Jesus addressed God as "My God" on the cross (Matthew 27:46).
Therefore I remember You from the land of Jordan
The mention of the "land of Jordan" situates the psalmist geographically, possibly indicating a physical or spiritual exile from Jerusalem, the center of worship. The Jordan River is significant in biblical history, marking the boundary of the Promised Land and the site of Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:13-17). Remembering God from this location suggests a longing for the presence and worship of God, which is central to the psalmist's faith. It also reflects the biblical theme of remembering God's past acts of deliverance as a source of hope and encouragement (Deuteronomy 8:2).
and the peaks of Hermon
Mount Hermon is a prominent mountain range in the northern part of Israel, often associated with majesty and divine presence. It is mentioned in the context of the dew that falls on Zion, symbolizing blessing and life (Psalm 133:3). The reference to Hermon may indicate the psalmist's physical distance from the temple in Jerusalem, enhancing the sense of spiritual longing. The peaks of Hermon also serve as a reminder of God's creation and sovereignty over all the earth, reinforcing the psalmist's trust in God's power and presence.
even from Mount Mizar.
Mount Mizar is less well-known, and its exact location is uncertain, but it is likely a smaller hill or mountain in the vicinity of Hermon. The mention of Mizar may emphasize the psalmist's feeling of being far from the central place of worship in Jerusalem. This geographical reference underscores the theme of exile and separation, both physically and spiritually. It highlights the psalmist's determination to remember and seek God despite being in a place of obscurity or insignificance, reflecting the biblical principle that God is accessible to His people wherever they are (John 4:21-24).
Persons / Places / Events
1. The Psalmist
The author of Psalm 42, traditionally attributed to the sons of Korah, who expresses deep longing and spiritual thirst for God.

2. God
The central figure whom the psalmist addresses, seeking comfort and presence amidst despair.

3. Jordan
A significant river in Israel, symbolizing a place of transition and spiritual significance.

4. Hermon
A mountain range in the northern part of Israel, representing a place of majesty and divine encounter.

5. Mount Mizar
A lesser-known location, possibly a smaller peak or hill, symbolizing a place of reflection and remembrance.
Teaching Points
Despair and Hope
Recognize that feelings of despair are part of the human experience, but they should lead us to hope in God.

The Power of Remembrance
Remembering God's past faithfulness can provide comfort and strength in present difficulties.

Geographical Significance
Understand the symbolic importance of places like Jordan and Hermon as reminders of God's presence and past deliverance.

Spiritual Longing
Cultivate a deep spiritual thirst for God, seeking His presence even when He feels distant.

Community and Worship
Engage in communal worship and fellowship, as the sons of Korah did, to find encouragement and support in times of spiritual dryness.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Psalm 42

Why does God allow suffering? The poet has not vet passed quite into the land of exile, the country beyond Jordan, but already he is on its borders, and as his sad eyes turn again and again towards the loved country he is leaving, its sacred summits begin to disappear, while ever nearer and higher rise the snow-clad peaks of Hermon.
Hermonites.--Rather, of the Hermons, i.e., either collectively for the whole range (as generally of mountains, the Balkans, etc.) or with reference to the appearance of the mountain as a ridge with a conspicuous peak at either end. In reality, however, the group known especially as Hermon has three summits, situated, like the angles of a triangle, a quarter of a mile from each other, and of almost equal elevation. Hence some think the poet is contrasting Hermon with Zion. In such a case, however, the custom of Hebrew poetry was to exalt Zion, and not depreciate the higher mountains, and it is very natural to suppose that some lower ridge or pass, over which the exile may be supposed wending his sad way, was actually called "the little," or "the less." . . .
Pulpit Commentary
Verse 6. - O my God, my soul is cast down within me; or, bowed down, as in the first clause of ver. 5. Therefore will I remember thee.
