inspired people get together to collaborate on making imagery in a specific vein that no one’s attempted before, a special kind of magic happens. Hence, this series title (which, translated into English, means) “Athena’s curse, Medusa’s fate.”</p> <p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-29200" title="2_Athena_07C (1)" live rhino and based his drawing on a brief sketch and a letter. The rhino that inspired Durer’s drawing was given by an Indian sultan to King Manuel of Portugal in 1515. The Portuguese king sent the rhino as a gift to the pope. These were created for Australian printing company <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://www.colourchiefs.com.au/">ColorChiefs</a> in 2006, and recently resurfaced on the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/2011/07/steampunk-native-americans/">How to Be a Retronaut</a> blog, to such wry comments as “Native American steampunk use ALL the parts of the 8088.” The images have also garnered some critique, both for their cultural appropriation and sexism. As blogger Ikwe <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://ikwe.tumblr.com/post/3483402602/i-found-this-while-doing-a-search-for-squaw-in">recently wrote on Tumblr</a>, “it’s not very creative to sexualize a native woman in this way but it’s packaged with a new futuristic sexy theme so it’s sooooo groundbreaking and chic. Oh yes, the ad also reminds us that we are moving forward from our primitive and savage ways. Meh.” Paging <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://nativeappropriations.blogspot.com/">Dr. Adrienne</a>!</p> <p>Looking at this somewhat clueless ad campaign did lead me through an interesting Wikipedia tunnel. Come with me on a magical journey:</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult">Cargo Cult</a> on Wikipedia:</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;">With the end of the war, the military abandoned the airbases and stopped dropping cargo. In response, charismatic individuals developed cults among remote Melanesian populations that promised to bestow on their followers deliveries of food, arms, Jeeps, etc. The cult leaders explained that the cargo would be gifts from their own ancestors, or other sources, as had occurred with the outsider armies. In attempts to get cargo to fall by parachute or land in planes or ships again, islanders imitated the same practices they had seen the <a title="Soldier" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier">soldiers</a>, <a title="Sailor" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor">sailors</a>, and airmen use. Cult behaviors usually involved mimicking the day to day activities and dress styles of US soldiers, such as performing parade ground drills with wooden or salvaged rifles.<sup id="cite_ref-4"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult#cite_note-4">[5]</a></sup> The islanders carved <a title="Headphone" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headphone">headphones</a> from wood and wore them while sitting in fabricated control towers. They waved the landing signals while standing on the <a title="Runway" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runway">runways</a>. They lit signal fires and torches to light up runways and lighthouses.<sup title="This claim needs references to reliable sources from December 2010">[<em><a title="Wikipedia:Citation needed" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed">citation needed</a></em>] </sup>In a form of <a title="Sympathetic magic" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sympathetic_magic">sympathetic magic</a>, many built life-size replicas of airplanes out of straw and cut new military-style landing strips out of the jungle, hoping to attract more airplanes. It revolves around one sister trying to find her sister who has become lost. She must follow the same path her sister has set out on going a little farther into this underground world of dark cabarets and strange theaters as she attempts to catch up to her sister, who is falling faster down this path in her desire to finally find a performer known as the Black Ibis. Myth intersects with reality, resulting in outlandish dream worlds, unexpected bedtime stories, and everyday affairs elevated to the exotic and the surreal.</p> <p>In his introduction to the collection, Neil Gaiman writes:</p> <blockquote><p>“…People forget the joy of story as they grow older. They forget the joy of poetry, of finding the perfect word, of turning a phrase, like a potter turning a pot on a wheel, and they believe mistakenly that poetry is not pleasure, but work , or worse, something good for you but unpleasant tasting, like cod-liver oil.</p> <p>Sandra Kasturi has not forgotten any of these things.”</p></blockquote> <p>Sandra has three poetry chapbooks published, as well as the well-received SF poetry anthology, <em>The Stars As Seen from this Particular Angle of Night</em>, which she edited. Her poetry has appeared in various magazines and anthologies, and her cultural essay, “Divine Secrets of the Yaga Sisterhood” appeared in the anthology <em>Girls Who Bite Back: Witches, Slayers, Mutants and Freaks</em>. Sandra is a founding member of the Algonquin Square Table poetry workshop and runs her own imprint, Kelp Queen Press. She has also received several Toronto Arts Council grants, and a Bram Stoker Award for her editorial work at <em>ChiZine: Treatments of Light and Shade in Words</em>. As an evolution of <em>ChiZine</em>, ChiZine Publications (CZP) “emerged on the Canadian publishing” scene in 2009. To quote from their philosophy:</p> <blockquote> <p style="text-align: left;">“CZP doesn’t want what’s hot now or stuff that’s so weird it’s entirely out in la-la-land—we want the next step forward. From the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20120218052354/http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/featured/post-apocalyptic-world-the-architects-brother/9590">Environmental Graffiti blog</a>:</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;">Could fixing clouds, pollinating a barren earth, making wind and patching up the sky ever be turned into almost humorous subjects? In “The Architect’s Brother,” a series of 42 photographic images by Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, we follow a determined and optimistic Everyman who does just that – and rewards viewers with new details the longer they look.</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;">The ParkeHarrisons are a husband-and-wife team whose photographic work, “The Architect’s Brother” is concerned with the state and possible fate of the Earth. The exhibition has travelled from 2002 to 2007 through the United States, Canada and Germany and is probably the artists’ most publicized work.
