His interest-driven decision to spend 5 years exclusively in the renal physiology laboratory at Mount Sinai Hospital as a renal fellow and member of the faculty proved to be the best investment he made to pursue an academic career in medicine. He was involved in developing colorimetric methods for the determination of uric acid and phosphorus in blood and urine that were applied to studying the transport characteristics of both electrolytes by renal micropuncture techniques in rat kidney. Zita Ballok completed her nuclear medicine and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) training at Austin Hospital and subsequently completed a fellowship program at the Nuclear Medicine and PET Centre in Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan. During her fellowship, she gained extensive experience in oncology and neurology PET Imaging and general nuclear medicine imaging under the supervision of Professor David Kuhl, a leading pioneer of brain imaging. Ballok is also the co-author of a number of published scientific papers in collaboration with colleagues in multiple specialties, including orthopaedic surgery, thoracic surgery, oncology, urology, neuro-surgery and endocrinology. She was also the convenor of the highly successful 35th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nuclear Medicine held in Melbourne.
