It encompasses the responsibilities and actions expected of believers as they live out their faith in accordance with God's commandments and teachings. Duty is often associated with obedience, service, and the fulfillment of God's will.

Biblical Foundations

The concept of duty is deeply rooted in Scripture, where it is often linked to the idea of obedience to God's commandments. In Ecclesiastes 12:13, the Preacher summarizes the essence of human duty: "When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind." This verse highlights the fundamental obligation of reverence and adherence to God's laws.

Duty to God

The primary duty of every believer is to love and serve God wholeheartedly. This is encapsulated in the greatest commandment as stated by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-38: "Jesus declared, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment." This duty involves worship, prayer, and a life dedicated to glorifying God.

Duty to Others

Scripture also emphasizes the duty to love and serve others. The second greatest commandment, as mentioned by Jesus in Matthew 22:39, is: "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" This duty is further elaborated in passages such as Galatians 6:2, which instructs believers to "Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." The duty to others includes acts of kindness, justice, and compassion.

Duty to Self

While duty to God and others is paramount, Scripture also acknowledges the responsibility individuals have towards themselves. This includes maintaining personal integrity, spiritual growth, and self-care. In 1 Timothy 4:16, Paul advises Timothy: "Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you."

Examples of Duty in Scripture

1. Abraham's Obedience: Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac (Genesis 22) exemplifies duty to God through obedience and faith.

2. The Good Samaritan: In Luke 10:25-37, the parable of the Good Samaritan illustrates duty to others through compassion and action.

3. Paul's Ministry: The Apostle Paul demonstrates duty through his tireless efforts to spread the Gospel and care for the early church, as seen in his letters (e.g., 1 Corinthians 9:16).

Challenges and Rewards

Fulfilling one's duty can be challenging, often requiring sacrifice and perseverance. However, Scripture assures believers of the rewards of faithfulness. In Matthew 25:21, Jesus speaks of the faithful servant: "His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’" This promise underscores the eternal significance of fulfilling one's duty.

Conclusion

While the concept of duty is multifaceted, it remains a central theme in the Christian life, guiding believers in their relationship with God, others, and themselves. Through Scripture, Christians are called to embrace their duties with faithfulness and love, reflecting the character of Christ in all they do.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. In the Old Testament it is the translation of dabhar, which, meaning originally "speech," or "word," came to denote any particular "matter" that had to be attended to. In the two places where it is rendered "duty" (2 Chronicles 8:14 Ezra 3:4) the reference is to the performance of the Temple services-praise and sacrifice-and it is probably from these passages that the phrase "taking duty" in church services is derived. In other passages we have different words employed to denote the priests' dues: the King James Version Leviticus 10:13, 14, hok ("statutory portion"); Deuteronomy 18:3, mishpat ("judgment"). In Proverbs 3:27, we have a reference to duty in the moral sense, "Withhold not good from them to whom it is due," ba`-al (i.e. as in the King James Version margin, "from the owners thereof"). In Exodus 21:10 we have the "duty of marriage" (`onah), that which was due to the wife.

In the New Testament "duty" is expressed by opheilo, "to owe," "to be due." In Luke 17:10, we have "Say,. we have done that which it was our duty to do," and in Romans 15:27 the King James Version, it is said of the Gentiles with reference to the Jewish Christians, "Their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things," the American Standard Revised Version "they owe it." In Matthew 18:34 we have "till he should pay all that was due" (opheilo, "owing"), and in 1 Corinthians 7:3 the King James Version, "Render unto the wife due opheile benevolence," the American Standard Revised Version "her due."
