The Greek word used here, "προσέχω" (prosechō), means to hold the mind towards, to pay attention to, or to be cautious about. In the context of Titus, Paul is urging believers to be vigilant and not to be swayed by distractions that could lead them away from the core truths of the Gospel. This is a call to prioritize the teachings of Christ above all else, ensuring that one's faith is grounded in divine truth rather than human invention.
to Jewish myths
The term "μύθοις" (mythois) refers to fables or tales that are not grounded in reality. In the historical context of the early church, there were various Jewish myths and genealogies that some were promoting as essential to the faith. These myths likely included speculative accounts and interpretations that were not rooted in Scripture. Paul warns against these because they can lead to confusion and division within the church. The emphasis here is on the sufficiency of Scripture and the Gospel, which should be the foundation of Christian teaching and belief.
or to the commands of men
This phrase highlights the danger of adhering to human traditions and rules that are not based on God's Word. The Greek word "ἐντολαῖς" (entolais) refers to commandments or precepts. Throughout the New Testament, there is a clear distinction between God's commandments and human traditions. Jesus Himself criticized the Pharisees for elevating human traditions above God's commandments (Mark 7:8). Paul is reiterating this warning, urging believers to discern between divine instruction and human-imposed rules that may lead them away from the truth of the Gospel.
who have rejected the truth
The phrase "ἀποστρεφομένων τὴν ἀλήθειαν" (apostrephomenōn tēn alētheian) speaks to a deliberate turning away from the truth. The Greek word "ἀποστρέφω" (apostrephō) means to turn away or to reject. This is a strong admonition against those who have consciously chosen to abandon the truth of the Gospel. In a conservative Christian perspective, this underscores the importance of remaining steadfast in the faith and being wary of those who distort or reject the core tenets of Christianity. The "truth" here is the Gospel message, the revelation of God through Jesus Christ, which is the foundation of Christian belief and practice. Paul is calling for a commitment to this truth, warning against the influence of those who have turned away from it.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(14) Not giving heed to Jewish fables.--Such as we now find embodied in the Talmud. The oral law and traditional interpretations and glosses had, to a great measure, obscured the original simple text. The Israelite of the time of St. Paul, trained in the stricter Jewish schools, was taught that the way to win the approval of the Most High was through the observance of countless ceremonies and the practice of an elaborate ritual.
And commandments of men.--The nature of these commandments we gather from the words of the next (the 15th) verse. They seem to have been on the subject of abstinence from meats and from other things created by God for the use and enjoyment of man. The directions of St. Paul here are, in spirit, in exact accordance with the Lord's teaching at Jerusalem, related in Matthew 15:1-9. St. Paul's dread of this kind of asceticism and of the peculiar school of teaching, then so popular among the Jews, which enjoined an elaborate system of ritual and observance, which pronounced meritorious in the sight of the Eternal the practice of rites and ceremonies minute and trifling, was grounded upon a fear--too often, alas, verified--lest with the observance of the ritual, and the careful practice of the ceremonies and rites, the moral law should be lost sight of. With this school a holy life consisted rather in observing carefully a ritual, than in living justly, nobly, generously.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 14. - Who for that, A.V.; turn away for turn, A.V. Jewish fables (see 1 Timothy 1:4; 1 Timothy 4:7; 2 Timothy 4:4, where the Jewish origin of the fables is implied, though not so distinctly stated as here). Commandments of men (ἐντολαῖς ἀνθρώπων); so in Colossians 2:22 the apostle speaks of the precepts "touch not," "taste not" (originating with the Judaizing teachers), as τὰ ἐντάλματα καὶ διδασκαλίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων (see following note). Turning away from (ἀποστρεφομένεν); see 2 Timothy 1:15, note.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
[and] will pay no attention
προσέχοντες (prosechontes)
Verb - Present Participle Active - Nominative Masculine Plural
Strong's 4337: From pros and echo; to hold the mind towards, i.e. Pay attention to, be cautious about, apply oneself to, adhere to.

to Jewish
Ἰουδαϊκοῖς (Ioudaikois)
Adjective - Dative Masculine Plural
Strong's 2451: Jewish, Judaic.
