The extracts of Acacia arabica (Babul), Curcuma longa (Haldi), Emblica officinalis (Amla), Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi) and Vitex nigundo (Nirgundi) were evaluated in vitro against three bacterial strains i.e. Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM 2079), Bacillus subtilis (NCIM 2063), Escherichia coli (NCIM 2065) and one Fluconazole-resistant yeast strain i.e. Candida albicans (NCIM 3628) by agar disc diffusion method. The collected ethno medicinal plants were used in folk medicine in the treatment of skin diseases and various infectious disorders. All the 05 plants exhibited antimicrobial activity against one or more of the tested microorganisms at three different concentrations of 5, 10 and 20 mg disc-1 The collected ethnomedicinal plants were used in folk medicine in the treatment of skin diseases, venereal diseases, respiratory problems and nervous disorders. Methods Plants were collected from Palni hills of Southern Western Ghats and the ethnobotanical data were gathered from traditional healers who inhabit the study area. The hexane and methanol extracts were obtained by cold percolation method and the antimicrobial activity was found using paper disc diffusion method. All microorganisms were obtained from Christian Medical College, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. Results The results indicated that out of 18 plants, 10 plants exhibited antimicrobial activity against one or more of the tested microorganisms at three different concentrations of 1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg/disc. Among the plants tested, Acalypha fruticosa, Peltophorum pterocarpum, Toddalia asiatica,Cassia auriculata, Punica granatum and Syzygium lineare were most active. The highest antifungal activity was exhibited by methanol extract of Peltophorum pterocarpum and Punica granatum against Candida albicans. Conclusion This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the some ethnomedicinal plants used in folkloric medicine. Compared to hexane extract, methanol extract showed significant activity against tested organisms. This study also showed that Toddalia asiatica, Syzygium lineare, Acalypha fruticosa and Peltophorum pterocarpum could be potential sources of new antimicrobial agents.
<div in vitro antimicrobial activity of plant extracts from Gulbarga region of Karnataka, India against dermatophytes, yeast and bacteria. Fifteen plants were selected on the basis of literature survey of traditional and folk medicine for microbial infections. The plants were collected and extracted each separately with 95% ethanol under cold conditions. The phytochemicals were qualitatively and quantitatively determined. By agar dilution method the MIC values were obtained of ethanolic extracts derived from the 15 plants that exhibited anti-microbial activity ranging between 2-0.25 mg/ml. MIC values for the Aloe vera, Boerhaavia diffusa and Lawsonia inermis found to be active against Streptococccus pyogens and Staphylococcus aureus with MIC of 0.25 mg/ml. The bacterial species include two Gram-positive(Streptococcus sp. and Staphylococcus aureus) and one Gram-negative(Escherichia coli). Aspergillus niger is the fungus taken for the study. In this study, the antimicrobial potency of single plants and the combined extracts, against the above mentioned microorganisms were assessed by well-diffusion technique. The plant extracts were subjected to various preliminary phytochemical analyses to determine the phytochemical constituents present in them. Studies revealed that, the synergism is more marked against Streptococcus spp. and Aspergillus niger especially the combination of Thespesia populnea and Ocimum sanctum is found to have more potent microbicidal activity.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Effect of some indian traditional plants on few common pathogens","attachmentId":99550015,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/98108853/Effect_of_some_indian_traditional_plants_on_few_common_pathogens","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

In vitro antimicrobial activity of some medicinal plants used by tribes in Warangal district (Andhra Pradesh), India
Editor AJSMR

India has rich heritage of using medicinal plants in traditional medicines such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani besides folklore practices. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of different plant extracts. The antimicrobial activities of some plant species (Phyllanthus emblica, Tinospora cordifolia, Eclipta alba, and Cassia occidentalis) extracts were evaluated against four bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli) by the disc diffusion method. Phyllanthus emblica and T. cordifolia had better activity against all the tested organisms compared to other plant extract fractions. Aqueous fraction of C. occidentalis and P. emblica showed high activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacteria. n-Hexane fraction of T. cordifolia showed high activity against E. coli (162 ml/g), P. aeruginosa (162 ml/g), and S. aureus (162 ml/g) bacteria.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button"
