He discussed the growth of his Uniregistry platform which has had a growth rate since the launch of the new gTLD’s of 85%. Foreign language transactions have grown at 300%.

Other Unitegistry updates include SSE (Secure Exchange) and updated app.

Day 2

Keynote Matt Mullinweg CEO of Automatic and creator of WordPress (age 32)

Why did you buy .blog (for 18. Million)

The Independent Web

WordPress’s mission is to enable the web for everyone and Democrtize publishing on the web. Domains are a key part of it. The only reason WordPress gave users third level domains was that was all that was available. Now users can have their own “custom domain”.blog. WordPress hosts over 27 percent of the top million websites and it is important that the people have control of their own content and location. The new top level domain .blog allows for this.

You can put your blog on a custom .blog at https://get.blog

30-40,000 per day go to WordPress.com. A large percentage are getting a blog first and then buying a domain. This is the key to growing the Independent Web and domain market. Sell a solution first and then add the domain.

Matt is now focused on WordPress development and is working on a “moonshot” which in his words will make editing a blog better than anything on the web. For more information on the future of WordPress read his State of the Word update in 2016.

The Ecosystem is not a walled garden. The combination of WordPress and plugins like jet pack and woo commerce make the creator and user experience of these WordPress sites competitive with platform sites.

The post Names Con 2017 Las Vegas appeared first on The .Build top-level domain name.

All new executive branch .gov domains will ditch HTTP, enforce HTTPS | TechCrunch

George Minardos

DNS

News

TLD

Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Gmail

The post All new executive branch .gov domains will ditch HTTP, enforce HTTPS | TechCrunch appeared first on The .Build top-level domain name.

Government websites just took a serious step toward robust security. The IANA function is like air, you don’t think about it when you breath but it is really important. There has been a lot of news lately about the NTIA’s planned IANA Transition. The plan is to move the IANA functions away from ICANN to a private non governmental organization.

You may have read that Ted Cruz is accusing the Obama administration of giving away the Internet to the Russians and the Chinese. Cruz’s absurd rhetoric is puzzling. As a US senator he should either be more informed, or he knows better and therefore is lying. His theatric positioning is inexcusable and could threaten to delay the process. A delay could threaten the world’s perspective of the Internet as a global resource. He is trying a lot of Washington trickery to stage a delay. Here is the DOJ’s recent response to Cruz.

“The simple fact is the Iana transition as outlined by the NTIA and approved by the ICANN board is good for America, good for the world and good for the internet.”

What is the Iana Function?

Since 1999, the IANA functions have been contracted to ICANN and have historically included:

The coordination of the assignment of technical Internet protocol parameters performed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF);

The administration of certain responsibilities associated with Internet DNS root zone management;

The allocation of Internet numbering resources to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs); and,

Other services related to the management of the .ARPA and .INT top-level domains.

(source Internet Society)

Why Now?

The privatization of the DNS has been a stated goal of the US government for 18 years. The official transition was announced in 2014. It has taken this long for the governance of the Internet to evolve into a multistakeholder model that could not subject to any one government.

For those interested in deeper information I’ve sourced the most factual and authoritative information in one location. Be warned you could lose hours reading these links!

History of the Iana

Iana functions: the Basics

ICANN Stewardship Transition

Everything on the internet has an acronym, this one is ICG

IANA: National Telecommunications and Information Administration: United States Department of Commerce

Open letter of support by Tech Industry leaders

Civil Society Support letter

Next Steps

The contract with ICANN for the IANA functions is set to expire Oct 1, 2016. This will conclude the 18 year transition to privatize the Domain Name System (DNS). The global acceptance of One Internet is the fundamental key to its continued growth and success.

Update: 9/29/16:

Father of the Internet describes his third child:

https://www.youtube.com/embed/vd3dH90tdhk

Senate passes bill without Cruz’s attempt to block IANA Transfer.

http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/298329-senate-passes-funding-bill-to-avoid-shutdown

IANA Transition: source APNIC

The post IANA Transition: an important Internet evolution appeared first on The .Build top-level domain name.
