τί δέ ἐστιν Παῦλος; διάκονοι δι' ὧν ἐπιστεύσατε, καὶ ἑκάστῳ ὡς ὁ κύριος ἔδωκεν.</span> <span class="verse">6</span> <span class="bible-greek">ἐγὼ ἐφύτευσα, Ἀπολλῶς ἐπότισεν, ἀλλὰ ὁ θεὸς ηὔξανεν:</span> <span class="verse">7</span> <span class="bible-greek">ὥστε οὔτε ὁ φυτεύων ἐστίν τι οὔτε ὁ ποτίζων, ἀλλ' ὁ αὐξάνων θεός.</span> <span class="verse">8</span> <span class="bible-greek">ὁ φυτεύων δὲ καὶ ὁ ποτίζων ἕν εἰσιν, ἕκαστος δὲ τὸν ἴδιον μισθὸν λήμψεται κατὰ τὸν ἴδιον κόπον.</span> <span class="verse">9</span> <span class="bible-greek">θεοῦ γάρ ἐσμεν συνεργοί: θεοῦ γεώργιον, θεοῦ οἰκοδομή ἐστε.</span> </td> <td class="bibletd2"> <span class="verse">1</span> And when I preached to you, I had to approach you as men with natural, not with spiritual thoughts. You were little children in Christ’s nursery, <span class="verse">2</span> and I gave you milk, not meat; you were not strong enough for it. You are not strong enough for it even now; nature still lives in you. <span class="verse">3</span> Do not these rivalries, these dissensions among you shew that nature is still alive, that you are guided by human standards? <span class="verse">4</span> When one of you says, I am for Paul, and another, I am for Apollo, are not these human thoughts? Why, what is Apollo, what is Paul? <span class="verse">5</span> Only the ministers of the God in whom your faith rests, who have brought that faith to each of you in the measure God granted.[1] <span class="verse">6</span> It was for me to plant the seed, for Apollo to water it, but it was God who gave the increase. <span class="verse">7</span> And if so, the man who plants, the man who waters, count for nothing; God is everything, since it is he who gives the increase. <span class="verse">8</span> This man plants, that man waters; it is all one. And yet either will receive his own wages, in proportion to his own work. <span class="verse">9</span> You are a field of God’s tilling, a structure of God’s design; and we are only his assistants. </td> <td class="bibletd3"> <span class="verse">1</span> <span class="bible-latin">Et ego, fratres, non potui vobis loqui quasi spiritualibus, sed quasi carnalibus. Unusquisque autem propriam mercedem accipiet, secundum suum laborem.</span> <span class="verse">9</span> <span class="bible-latin">Dei enim sumus adjutores: Dei agricultura estis, Dei ædificatio estis.</span> </td> </tr></table> <table class="bibletable"><tr> <td class="bibletd1"> <span class="verse">10</span> <span class="bible-greek">Κατὰ τὴν χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ τὴν δοθεῖσάν μοι ὡς σοφὸς ἀρχιτέκτων θεμέλιον ἔθηκα, ἄλλος δὲ ἐποικοδομεῖ. ἕκαστος δὲ βλεπέτω πῶς ἐποικοδομεῖ:</span> <span class="verse">11</span> <span class="bible-greek">θεμέλιον γὰρ ἄλλον οὐδεὶς δύναται θεῖναι παρὰ τὸν κείμενον, ὅς ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός.</span> <span class="verse">12</span> <span class="bible-greek">εἰ δέ τις ἐποικοδομεῖ ἐπὶ τὸν θεμέλιον χρυσόν ἄργυρον λίθους τιμίους, ξύλα, χόρτον, καλάμην,</span> <span class="verse">13</span> <span class="bible-greek">ἑκάστου τὸ ἔργον φανερὸν γενήσεται, ἡ γὰρ ἡμέρα δηλώσει: ὅτι ἐν πυρὶ ἀποκαλύπτεται, καὶ ἑκάστου τὸ ἔργον ὁποῖόν ἐστιν τὸ πῦρ αὐτὸ δοκιμάσει.</span> <span class="verse">14</span> <span class="bible-greek">εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον μενεῖ ὃ ἐποικοδόμησεν, μισθὸν λήμψεται:</span> <span class="verse">15</span> <span class="bible-greek">εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον κατακαήσεται, ζημιωθήσεται, αὐτὸς δὲ σωθήσεται, οὕτως δὲ ὡς διὰ πυρός.</span> </td> <td class="bibletd2"> <span class="verse">10</span> With what grace God has bestowed on me, I have laid a foundation as a careful architect should; it is left for someone else to build upon it. Only, whoever builds on it must be careful how he builds. <span class="verse">11</span> The foundation which has been laid is the only one which anybody can lay; I mean Jesus Christ. <span class="verse">12</span> But on this foundation different men will build in gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, or straw, <span class="verse">13</span> and each man’s workmanship will be plainly seen. It is the day of the Lord that will disclose it, since that day is to reveal itself in fire, and fire will test the quality of each man’s workmanship. <span class="verse">14</span> He will receive a reward, if the building he has added on stands firm; <span class="verse">15</span> if it is burnt up, he will be the loser; and yet he himself will be saved, though only as men are saved by passing through fire.[2] </td> <td class="bibletd3"> <span class="verse">10</span> <span class="bible-latin">Secundum gratiam Dei, quæ data est mihi, ut sapiens architectus fundamentum posui: alius autem superædificat. Unusquisque autem videat quomodo superædificet.</span> <span class="verse">11</span> <span class="bible-latin">Fundamentum enim aliud nemo potest ponere præter id quod positum est, quod est Christus Jesus.</span> <span class="verse">12</span> <span class="bible-latin">Si quis autem superædificat super fundamentum hoc, aurum, argentum, lapides pretiosos, ligna, fœnum, stipulam,</span> <span class="verse">13</span> <span class="bible-latin">uniuscujusque opus manifestum erit: dies enim Domini declarabit, quia in igne revelabitur: et uniuscujusque opus quale sit, ignis probabit.</span> <span class="verse">14</span> <span class="bible-latin">Si cujus opus manserit quod superædificavit, mercedem accipiet.</span> <span class="verse">15</span> <span class="bible-latin">Si cujus opus arserit, detrimentum patietur: ipse autem salvus erit, sic tamen quasi per ignem.</span> </td> </tr></table> <table class="bibletable"><tr> <td class="bibletd1"> <span class="verse">16</span> <span class="bible-greek">Οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι ναὸς θεοῦ ἐστε καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ οἰκεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν;</span> <span class="verse">17</span> <span class="bible-greek">εἴ τις τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ φθείρει, φθερεῖ τοῦτον ὁ θεός: ὁ γὰρ ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ἅγιός ἐστιν, οἵτινές ἐστε ὑμεῖς.</span> <span class="verse">18</span> <span class="bible-greek">Μηδεὶς ἑαυτὸν ἐξαπατάτω: εἴ τις δοκεῖ σοφὸς εἶναι ἐν ὑμῖν ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ, μωρὸς γενέσθω, ἵνα γένηται σοφός.</span> <span class="verse">19</span> <span class="bible-greek">ἡ γὰρ σοφία τοῦ κόσμου τούτου μωρία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ ἐστιν: γέγραπται γάρ, ὁ δρασσόμενος τοὺς σοφοὺς ἐν τῇ πανουργίᾳ αὐτῶν:</span> <span class="verse">20</span> <span class="bible-greek">καὶ πάλιν, κύριος γινώσκει τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς τῶν σοφῶν ὅτι εἰσὶν μάταιοι.</span> <span class="verse">21</span> <span class="bible-greek">ὥστε μηδεὶς καυχάσθω ἐν ἀνθρώποις: πάντα γὰρ ὑμῶν ἐστιν,</span> <span class="verse">22</span> <span class="bible-greek">εἴτε Παῦλος εἴτε Ἀπολλῶς εἴτε Κηφᾶς εἴτε κόσμος εἴτε ζωὴ εἴτε θάνατος εἴτε ἐνεστῶτα εἴτε μέλλοντα, πάντα ὑμῶν,</span> <span class="verse">23</span> <span class="bible-greek">ὑμεῖς δὲ Χριστοῦ, Χριστὸς δὲ θεοῦ.</span> </td> <td class="bibletd2"> <span class="verse">16</span> Do you not understand that you are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit has his dwelling in you? <span class="verse">17</span> If anybody desecrates the temple of God, God will bring him to ruin. It is a holy thing, this temple of God which is nothing other than yourselves.[3] <span class="verse">18</span> You must not deceive yourselves, any of you, about this. If any of you thinks he is wise, after the fashion of his fellow men, he must turn himself into a fool, so as to be truly wise. <span class="verse">19</span> This world’s wisdom, with God, is but folly. So we read in scripture, I will entrap the wise with their own cunning.[4] <span class="verse">20</span> And again, The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, and how empty they are.[5] <span class="verse">21</span> Nobody, therefore, should repose his confidence in men. <span class="verse">22</span> Everything is for you, whether it be Paul, or Apollo, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or the present, or the future; it is all for you,[6] <span class="verse">23</span> and you for Christ, and Christ for God. </td> <td class="bibletd3"> <span class="verse">16</span> <span class="bible-latin">Nescitis quia templum Dei estis, et Spiritus Dei habitat in vobis?</span> <span class="verse">17</span> <span class="bible-latin">Si quis autem templum Dei violaverit, disperdet illum Deus. Templum enim Dei sanctum est, quod estis vos.</span> <span class="verse">18</span> <span class="bible-latin">Nemo se seducat: si quis videtur inter vos sapiens esse in hoc sæculo, stultus fiat ut sit sapiens.</span> <span class="verse">19</span> <span class="bible-latin">Sapientia enim hujus mundi, stultitia est apud Deum. Scriptum est enim: Comprehendam sapientes in astutia eorum.</span> <span class="verse">20</span> <span class="bible-latin">Et iterum: Dominus novit cogitationes sapientium quoniam vanæ sunt.</span> <span class="verse">21</span> <span class="bible-latin">Nemo itaque glorietur in hominibus.</span> <span class="verse">22</span> <span class="bible-latin">Omnia enim vestra sunt, sive Paulus, sive Apollo, sive Cephas, sive mundus, sive vita, sive mors, sive præsentia, sive futura: omnia enim vestra sunt:</span> <span class="verse">23</span> <span class="bible-latin">vos autem Christi: Christus autem Dei.</span> </td> </tr></table> <ul class="bibleul"> <p>[1] This is the sense of the Latin; the Greek has, ‘Only serving-men, who have brought you faith, brought it to each of you in the measure God granted’.</p> <p>[2] <em>vv. 10-15:</em> In its immediate reference, this passage seems to imply that we cannot decide yet how much good the influence of any Christian teacher (e.g. Apollo) has done; it is only at the last day that such things will be made known to us. (Cf. 4.5 below.) But it has always been understood as having a wider application; each one of us is building upon the foundation of Christian faith which has been laid in him, and the merits or demerits of his building will be made known only at his judgement.
