Please check this webpage regularly for updates.</p> <p class="plugin_file"> <a href="/web/20191018225036/http://www.sterrenlab.com/media/cms_page_media/2017/12/16/programme.docx" target="_blank"> <span class="filetitle">Program <span class="filesize">(30.3 KB)</span></span> </a> </p> <h4><br> Who?</h4> <p>The camp is open to a maximum of <strong>56</strong> secondary school students aged <strong>16-18</strong> (born in 1999, 2000 and 2001) from the ESO Member States* and additional ESO Science Outreach Network Countries (ESON)**.<br> <br> A number of places will be available to students from other countries, however they will not be eligible to receive bursaries. The working language of the camp will be English. Participants of previous editions can apply, but priority will be given to new applicants. <br> <br> <em>* Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom  ** Albania, Australia, Chile, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, United States of America. </em></p> </div> <div class="col-md-6 col-sm-6" style=""> <h4>Where?</h4> <p>The camp will take place at the Astronomical Observatory of the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley located in <strong>Saint-Barthélemy</strong> (Nus, Italy) in natural scenery of unspoiled Alpine beauty, close to some of Europe’s highest mountains and under clear skies. The Observatory’s staff has a long experience both in scientific research and educational activities; moreover, the Observatory is equipped with seven telescopes devoted to the camp activities.</p> <p><br> Camp participants will be accommodated at the hostel of Saint-Barthélemy, situated next to the Observatory and known for its cheerful atmosphere. We will celebrate <strong>New Year's Eve</strong> together with a traditional dinner and a <strong>Star Party</strong>.</p> <h4>Safety </h4> <p>Safety is the most important point in the organisation of a youth camp. The ESO Astronomy Camp guarantees: </p> <ul> <li>safe accommodation at the hostel</li> <li>supervision by professionals with experience in youth camps</li> <li>health factsheet and consideration of allergies and dietary requirements</li> <li>"what to bring” factsheet with clear instructions of the required winter equipment</li> <li>first aid trained staff at the hostel</li> <li>liability insurance for European participants</li> <li>telephone and internet contact with families</li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-12 col-sm-12" style=""> <div style=""><span style="display: none;"> </span></div> <hr> <p> </p> </div> <div class="col-md-6 col-sm-6" style=""> <h4>Costs and application</h4> <p>The camp fee is 500 euro. <br> The fee includes full board accommodation (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at the hostel of Saint-Barthelemy, supervision by professional staff, all the astronomical and leisure activities, material, excursions, internal transports, transport between Milan Malpensa airport and the Observatory (private bus) and insurance.</p> <p>It does not include pocket money, travel costs to and from Milan Malpensa, (non-emergency) phone calls and anything not listed above.</p> <p>To apply, students should complete the form below and upload a 3-minute-long video. The video shall be considered as a short presentation to show the applicant's interest in participating in the astronomy camp. The jury will take into account criteria such as:</p> <ul> <li>English proficiency</li> <li>Scientific correctness</li> <li>Motivation to participate</li> <li>Enthusiasm</li> <li>Creativity</li> <li>Willingness to engage in group activities</li> <li>Diversity</li> </ul> <p>The video should be in English on the theme "<strong>I would like to invent/discover... because</strong>"; the candidate shall feature in the video, speak English and take into account the evaluation criteria listed above.</p> <p>Formats allowed: avi, flv, mov, mp4, mkv, wmv. Size: max 40MB. If it is necessary to reduce the file size of your video, please follow online tutorials.</p> <ul> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-6 col-sm-6" style=""> <p> </p> <p><br> <br> The applicant from an ESO member state with the best entry for participation at the incontestable discretion of the organisers will win a free trip sponsored by ESO (the complete cost of the camp and transportation to the camp).
