Hybrid-electric propulsion leads to better energy management, reducing fuel consumption by up to 5% compared to a standard flight. This type of disruptive technology is a unique opportunity for Europe to be at the forefront of decarbonising aviation. </p><p>Looking at the electrification of the automotive sector, latest news shows unfortunately that Europe lags behind compared to other markets. That is obviously the reason why we need to further invest in Research & Innovation in aviation. Still, I am confident. The research performed at the moment is dedicated to smaller short and medium range aircraft. It is a kind of laboratory that will also serve for the larger long-range aircraft.</p><h4>How important is EU funding to carry out projects on R&I? What is the real added value of EU funding?</h4><p>EU funding is key. To decarbonise, we are exploring technology with a clear deadline: entry in service of completely new aircraft by 2035. In aviation, 10 years is a relatively short period. The EU funding enables us to explore the so-called lower “Technology Readiness Level (TRL)”. This includes Basic Technology Research, as well as Research to Prove feasibility. TRLs are a method to estimate the maturity of these technologies.<br>The support of Europe is needed to be sure we do not miss out on anything, which is extremely valuable.</p><h4>How promising does the Clean Aviation aircraft concept for the regional segment look to you?</h4><p>What will the next generation regional aircraft look like? It will look like a completely new aircraft. It will fly with new engines, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and some will be hybrid electric. Therefore, the next challenge is the integration of these new technologies and making sure they properly interact with each other. I am very much looking forward to these milestones. Also, I reckon we need to give the next generation the right to fly and travel without any guilt.</p><h4>Collaborative work is a no brainer in R&I. Which are the most essential partners for this type of work? For instance, SME’s can play the disruptive part / Researchers will do the deep analysis, etc. Could you please dig deeper in how collaboration fosters disruptive technologies?</h4><p>As we enter in a completely new era, new collaborative work and research is more essential than ever. For the lower level TRLs, Airbus is used to work with diverse stakeholders like SMEs. Within this vast array of different TRLs, our role is to be the “chef d’orchestre” and to trigger innovation. Innovation is about people, so it’s about creating trust and a specific spirit that will lead to game-changing technologies at the end of the day.
