and Julius<MG2457> treated<MG5530> Paul<MG3972> with consideration<MG5364> and allowed<MG2010> him to go<MG4198> to his friends<MG5384> and receive<MG5177> care<MG1958>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>From<MG2547> there<MG2547> we put<MG321> out<MG321> to<MG321> sea<MG321> and sailed<MG5284> under<MG5284> the shelter<MG5284> of Cyprus<MG2954>, because<MG1223> the winds<MG417> were contrary<MG1727>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When we had sailed<MG1277> through<MG1277> the sea<MG3989> along<MG2596> the<MG2596> coast<MG2596> of Cilicia<MG2791> and Pamphylia<MG3828>, we landed<MG2718> at Myra<MG3460> in Lycia<MG3073>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>There<MG2546> the centurion<MG1543> found<MG2147> an Alexandrian<MG222> ship<MG4143> sailing<MG4126> for Italy<MG2482>, and he put<MG1688> us aboard<MG1688> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>When we had sailed<MG1020> slowly<MG1020> for a good<MG2425> many<MG2425> days<MG2250>, and with difficulty<MG3433> had arrived<MG1096> off<MG2596> Cnidus<MG2834>, since the wind<MG417> did not permit<MG4330> us <i>to go</i> farther<MG4330>, we sailed<MG5284> under<MG5284> the shelter<MG5284> of Crete<MG2914>, off<MG2596> Salmone<MG4534>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and with difficulty<MG3433> sailing<MG3881> past<MG3881> it, we came<MG2064> to a place<MG5117> called<MG2564> Fair<MG2568> Havens<MG2568>, near<MG1451> which<MG3739> was the city<MG4172> of Lasea<MG2996>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>When considerable<MG2425> time<MG5550> had passed<MG1230> and the voyage<MG4144> was now<MG2235> dangerous<MG2000>, since<MG1223> even<MG2532> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>fast<MG3521> was already<MG2235> over<MG3928>, Paul<MG3972> <i>started</i> admonishing<MG3867> <i>them,</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>saying<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Men<MG435>, I perceive<MG2334> that the voyage<MG4144> will<MG3195> certainly<MG3195> be with damage<MG5196> and great<MG4183> loss<MG2209>, not only<MG3440> of the cargo<MG5413> and the ship<MG4143>, but also<MG2532> of our lives<MG5590>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But the centurion<MG1543> was more<MG3123> persuaded<MG3982> by the pilot<MG2942> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>captain<MG3490> of<MG3490> the<MG3490> ship<MG3490> than<MG2228> by what was being said<MG3004> by Paul<MG3972>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The harbor<MG3040> was not<MG428> suitable<MG428> for wintering<MG3915>, so the majority<MG4183> reached<MG5087> a decision<MG1012> to put<MG321> out<MG321> to sea<MG321> from<MG1564> there<MG1564>, if<MG1487> somehow<MG4458> they could<MG1410> reach<MG2658> Phoenix<MG5405>, a harbor<MG3040> of Crete<MG2914> facing<MG991> southwest<MG3047> and northwest<MG5566>, and spend<MG3914> the<MG3914> winter<MG3914> <i>there.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>When a moderate<MG5285> south<MG3558> wind<MG3558> came<MG5285> up<MG5285>, thinking<MG1380> that they had attained<MG2902> their purpose<MG4286>, they weighed<MG142> anchor<MG142> and <i>began</i> sailing<MG3881> along<MG3881> Crete<MG2914>, closer<MG788> <i>to shore.</i> <p class="hdg">Shipwreck</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But before<MG3326, 3756> very<MG4183> long<MG4183> a violent<MG5189> wind<MG417>, called<MG2564> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Euraquilo<MG2146b>, rushed<MG906> down<MG2596> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>the land; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and when the ship<MG4143> was caught<MG4884> <i>in it</i> and could<MG1410> not head<MG503> up<MG503> into<MG503> the wind<MG417>, we gave<MG1929> up<MG1929> and let ourselves be driven<MG5342> <i>by the wind.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Running<MG5295> under<MG5295> the<MG5295> shelter<MG5295> of a small<MG3519> island<MG3519> called<MG2564> Cauda<MG2802>, we were<MG2480> able<MG2480> to get<MG1096> the <i>ship&#8217;s</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>boat<MG4627> under<MG4031> control<MG4031> <i>only</i> with<MG3433> difficulty<MG3433>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>After they had hoisted<MG142> it up<MG142>, they used<MG5530> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>supporting<MG996> cables<MG996> in undergirding<MG5269> the ship<MG4143>; and fearing<MG5399> that they might run<MG1601b> aground<MG1601b> on <i>the shallows</i> of Syrtis<MG4950>, they let<MG5465> down<MG5465> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>sea<MG4632> anchor<MG4632> and let themselves be driven<MG5342> along in<MG3779> this<MG3779> way<MG3779>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>The next<MG1836> day as we were being violently<MG4971> tossed<MG5492> by<MG5492> the storm<MG5492>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>they began to jettison<MG1546> the<MG1546> cargo<MG1546>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and on the third<MG5154> day they threw<MG4496> the ship&#8217;s<MG4143> tackle<MG4631> <i>overboard</i> with their own<MG849b> hands<MG849b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Since neither<MG3383> sun<MG2246> nor<MG3383> stars<MG798> appeared<MG2014> for many<MG4183> days<MG2250>, and no<MG3756> small<MG3641> storm<MG5494> was assailing<MG1945> <i>us,</i> from<MG3062> then<MG3062> on<MG3062> all<MG3956> hope<MG1680> of our being saved<MG4982> was <i>slowly</i> abandoned<MG4014>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>When many<MG4183> had lost<MG5225, 776> their appetites<MG776>, Paul<MG3972> then<MG5119> stood<MG2476> among<MG3319> them and said<MG3004>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Men<MG435>, you should<MG1163> have followed<MG3980> my advice<MG3980> and not have set<MG321> sail<MG321> from Crete<MG2914>, and <i>thereby</i> spared<MG2770> yourselves this<MG3778> damage<MG5196> and loss<MG2209>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And <i>yet</i> now<MG3568> I urge<MG3867> you to keep<MG2114> up<MG2114> your courage<MG2114>, for there will be no<MG3762> loss<MG580> of life<MG5590> among<MG1537> you, but <i>only</i> of the ship<MG4143>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>For this<MG3778> <i>very</i> night<MG3571> an angel<MG32a> of the God<MG2316> to whom<MG3739> I belong<MG1510>, whom<MG3739> I also<MG2532> serve<MG3000>, came<MG3936> to me, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>saying<MG3004>, &#8216;Do not be<MG5399> afraid<MG5399>, Paul<MG3972>; you must<MG1163> stand<MG3936> before<MG3936> Caesar<MG2541>; and behold<MG2400>, God<MG2316> has graciously<MG5483> granted<MG5483> you all<MG3956> those<MG3588> who are sailing<MG4126> with you.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Therefore<MG1352>, keep<MG2114> up<MG2114> your courage<MG2114>, men<MG435>, for I believe<MG4100> God<MG2316> that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>it will turn<MG1510> out<MG1510> exactly<MG3779, 2596, 5158> as I have been told<MG2980>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But we must<MG1163> run<MG1601b> aground<MG1601b> on a certain<MG5100> island<MG3520>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But when<MG5613> the fourteenth<MG5065a> night<MG3571> came<MG1096>, as we were being driven<MG1308> about<MG1308> in the Adriatic<MG99> Sea, about<MG2596> midnight<MG3319, 3571> the sailors<MG3492> <i>began</i> to suspect<MG5282> that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>they were approaching<MG4317> some<MG5100> land<MG5561>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And they took<MG1001> soundings<MG1001> and found<MG2147> <i>it to be</i> twenty<MG1501> fathoms<MG3712>; and a little<MG1024> farther<MG1339> on they took<MG1001> another<MG3825> sounding<MG1001> and found<MG2147> <i>it to be</i> fifteen<MG1178b> fathoms<MG3712>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Fearing<MG5399> that we might run<MG1601b> aground<MG1601b> somewhere<MG4225> on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>rocks<MG5138>, they cast<MG4496> four<MG5064> anchors<MG45> from the stern<MG4403> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>prayed<MG2172> for daybreak<MG2250>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But as the sailors<MG3492> were trying<MG2212> to escape<MG5343> from the ship<MG4143> and had let<MG5465> down<MG5465> the <i>ship&#8217;s</i> boat<MG4627> into the sea<MG2281>, on the pretense<MG4392> that they were<MG3195> going<MG3195> to<MG3195> lay<MG1614> out<MG1614> anchors<MG45> from the bow<MG4408>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Paul<MG3972> said<MG3004> to the centurion<MG1543> and the soldiers<MG4757>, &#8220;Unless<MG1437, 3361> these<MG3778> men<MG3778> remain<MG3306> on the ship<MG4143>, you yourselves<MG4771> cannot<MG1410, 3756> be saved<MG4982>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> the soldiers<MG4757> cut<MG609> away<MG609> the ropes<MG4979> of the <i>ship&#8217;s</i> boat<MG4627> and let<MG1439> it fall<MG1601b> away<MG1601b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Until<MG891> the day<MG2250> was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> dawn<MG1096>, Paul<MG3972> kept encouraging<MG3870> them all<MG537a> to take<MG3335> some food<MG5160>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Today<MG4594> is the fourteenth<MG5065a> day<MG2250> that you have been constantly<MG1300> watching<MG4328> and going without<MG777> eating<MG777>, having taken<MG4355> in<MG4355> nothing<MG3367>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Therefore<MG1352>, I encourage<MG3870> you to take<MG3335> some food<MG5160>, for this<MG3778> is for your survival<MG4991>, for not a hair<MG2359> from the head<MG2776> of any<MG3762> of you will perish<MG622>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Having said<MG3004> this<MG3778>, he took<MG2983> bread<MG740> and gave<MG2168> thanks<MG2168> to God<MG2316> in<MG1799> the<MG1799> presence<MG1799> of<MG1799> them all<MG3956>, and he broke<MG2806> it and began<MG757> to eat<MG2068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>All<MG3956> of them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>were encouraged<MG2115a> and they themselves<MG846> also took<MG4355> food<MG5160>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>We were 276<MG1250, 1440, 1803> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>people<MG5590> on the ship<MG4143> in all<MG3956>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>When they had eaten<MG2880, 5160> enough<MG2880>, they <i>began</i> lightening<MG2893> the ship<MG4143> by throwing<MG1544b> the wheat<MG4621> out<MG1544b> into the sea<MG2281>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when<MG3753> day<MG2250> came<MG1096>, they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>could not recognize<MG1921> the land<MG1093>; but they did notice<MG2657> a bay<MG2859> with a beach<MG123>, and they resolved<MG1011> to run<MG1856> the ship<MG4143> onto<MG1856> it if<MG1487> they could<MG1410>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And casting<MG4014> off<MG4014> the anchors<MG45>, they left<MG1439> them in the sea<MG2281> while at the same<MG260> time<MG260> they were loosening<MG447> the ropes<MG2202> of the rudders<MG4079>; and they hoisted<MG1869> the foresail<MG736> to the wind<MG4154> and were heading<MG2722> for the beach<MG123>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>But they struck<MG4045> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>reef<MG5117> where<MG1337> two<MG1337> seas<MG1337> met<MG1337> and ran<MG1946a> the ship<MG3491> aground<MG1946a>; and the prow<MG4408> stuck<MG2043> firmly<MG2043> and remained<MG3306> immovable<MG761>, while<MG1161> the stern<MG4403> <i>started to</i> break<MG3089> up<MG3089> due<MG5259> to<MG5259> the force<MG970> <i>of the waves.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>The soldiers&#8217;<MG4757> plan<MG1012> was to kill<MG615> the prisoners<MG1202>, so<MG3361> that<MG3361> none<MG3361, 5100> <i>of them</i> would swim<MG1579> away<MG1579> and escape<MG1309>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>but the centurion<MG1543>, wanting<MG1014> to bring<MG1295> Paul<MG3972> safely<MG1295> through<MG1295>, kept<MG2967> them from <i>accomplishing</i> their intention<MG1013>, and commanded<MG2753> that those<MG3588> who could<MG1410> swim<MG2860> were to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>jump<MG641> overboard<MG641> first<MG4413> and get<MG1826> to land<MG1093>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/27-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>and the rest<MG3062> <i>were to follow,</i> some<MG3739, 3303a> on planks<MG4548>, and others<MG3739, 1161> on various<MG5100> things<MG5100> from the ship<MG4143>.
