flight of Christians from the country and he will respond that the Chaldeans are people of peace, a people with no militia. </p> <p>He also makes note of the fact that terrorists kill not only Christians, but also Muslims. </p> <p>Some Christians in Iraq, however, think that conciliatory statements are not enough to stop the exodus of the Christian minority living along the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. </p> <p>They no longer want to turn the other cheek, but would rather pressure the government and protest their situation in order to raise awareness of it outside Iraq. </p> <p>‘We all love the cardinal. He is like a gem in his red robe. But something drastic must happen soon before Christians disappear for good from this country,’ said human rights activist Pascale Warda, a former displacement and migration minister. </p> <p>Warda is an Assyrian Christian who lives in one of the most heavily guarded areas of Baghdad. Although she has a French passport, she does not consider exile a solution. </p> <p>‘We have to mobilize people in the streets of Iraq. And if that doesn’t work, then we will organize demonstrations in France and Australia,’ she said. </p> <p>About 1.5 million Christians lived in Iraq when the United States launched the invasion in the spring of 2003 to bring down the regime of dictator Saddam Hussein. Today, according to unofficial estimates, they number about 750,000. </p> <p>More than 730 Christians have been killed since the US-led invasion. The stark figures don’t provide a human face – the dead include a young man on his way to university and the owner of a housewares store, both killed in early February. Most Christian victims die in the capital, Baghdad, or in Mosul in the north where they are mixed up in the frontline of a power struggle between Arabs and Kurds. </p> <p>Among the Christians who have been killed are 12 clergymen who now are revered by their parishes as martyrs. Some of the slayings of students, pharmacists, doctors and priests are attributed to al-Qaeda terrorists. But who is responsible for the other killings? According to the Hammurabi human rights organization, more than 70 per cent of the murders of Christians were never explained. </p> <p>Most Iraqi Muslims have no complaints about their Christian neighbours. Some of them send their children to Christian schools, which have good reputations. But when it comes to protecting their buildings and churches, hardly anyone feels responsible. </p> <p>On Christmas Day when members of the Shiite Shabak community in the town of Batallah near Mosul tore down the Christmas decorations at an Assyrian Christian church. They complained about the celebration of Christian festivities during the Shiite mourning month of Muharram, which had started a week before Christmas. </p> <p>To Warda it was particularly shocking that in the latter incident the Shiites were armed and they drove police vehicles – the ominous combination of intolerance and power that has convinced so many Iraqi Christians to flee their homeland. width="610"/></a> <br/>وقال المتحدث باسم الوزارة اللواء الركن محمد العسكري خلال مؤتمر صحافي عقده الاثنين ان القوات الأمنية تمكنت من القبض على تسعة من عناصر تنظيم "دولة العراق الاسلامية" بينهم معتقل سوري الجنسية متورطون في جرائم قتل وخطف وتشريد في محافظة نينوى ، مشيرا الى انهم ادلوا باعترافات تتعلق بارتكابهم العديد من الجرائم. <br/>وابرز المعتقلين الذين عرضت اعترافاتهم في تسجيل مصور محمد رمزي شهاب الذي عرف بأنه "مفتي نينوى" واقر بقيامه بذبح مسيحيين لعدم دفعهم الجزية كما اكد اشرافه على عملية تفجير عنيفة استهدفت قرية الخزنة وهي احدى المناطق في نينوى والتي تسكنها اقلية من الشبك وسقط فيها نحو 40 قتيلا في العاشر من اغسطس الماضي. <br/>وبحسب التسجيل قال شهاب "تم تجنيدي من قبل امام باكستاني في لندن وقام بتمويلي للقيام بعمليات ونصبني مفتيا فأعطيت فتوى بذبح مدرس مسيحي واخرى ضد صاحب محل مسيحي ايضا لعدم دفعه الجزية". <br/>كما اكد تورطه باصدار فتاوى تبيح قتل ثلاث نساء بتهمة نقل اخبار للاجهزة الامنية على حد قوله. <br/>ومن بين المعتقلن الذين عرضت اعترافاتهم سوري الجنسية يدعى عزمي دربي محمد من سكان منطقة حمص وقد اعتقل بينما كان "يرتدي ملابس نسائية". <br/>وقال العسكري "ان عزمي جندته نساء للعمل كامرأة في منازل الشيوخ لجمع المعلومات وكذلك لنقل العبوات واسلحة كاتمة للصوت لأن تفتيش المرأة صعب وسطحي". <br/>من جهته اعترف المتهم الثاني علي مأمون وهو صيدلاني من الموصل بمشاركته في "قتل الجرحى من رجال الامن العراقيين الذين ينقلون الى المستشفى لتلقي العلاج". <br/>واكد انه قام "بتوجيه تهديدات للاطباء والصيادلة في نينوى بالحصول على تمويل من خلال الابتزاز" فيما اقر احمد ذنون اسماعيل بقيامه ب"ذبح عدد من المسيحيين". <br/>كذلك اعترف عادل نجم شكارة الحمداني بأن "دولة العراق الاسلامية" عينته واليا للساحل الايسر في مدينة الموصل. <br/>يذكر ان محافظة نينوى وعاصمتها مدينة الموصل التي تبعد 395 كيلومترا شمال بغداد كانت واحدة من المحافظات التي خضعت لنفوذ تنظيم القاعدة ودولة العراق الاسلامية خلال وتحليل الأحداث التي وقعت في ناحية برطلة الجمعة الماضية مشيرا الى ان الجميع اتفقوا على ان هناك إشاعة أطلقت بان هناك لافتة رفعت من قبل أشخاص،ومن خلال إجراء التحقيقات واللجنة المكلفة بذلك تم إلقاء القبض على الشخص  ولم تستطع الجهات التحقيقية ان تثبت وجود لافتة رفعت وانما كانت هي مجرد اشاعة ولايوجد اثر لذلك حيث كانت هناك إشاعة مبيتة من جهة ثالثة ارادت ان تشعل الفتنة بين الاخوة الشبك والمسيحيين وتم القاء القبض على بعض عناصر الشرطة الذين ساهموا في المظاهرة كما وتم القاء القبض على سيارة الشرطة والتحقيق جاري بالنسبة لكل المسيئين .. ونود ان نطمئن الجميع بان هناك قانون يطبق ولا يجوز التجاوز  عليه. The church is Our Lady of Deliverance Syriac Catholic Church in Baghdad, and outside is the more familiar Iraqi scene of barbed wire and armed guards. Behind the tinsel and carols lies a fear that Christians in Iraq are a community under threat of extinction. Proportionally more Christians are leaving Iraq than any other group.</p> <p>Last week 100 Christian leaders and politicians of all religions held an emergency meeting just before fresh violence broke out in the northern city of Mosul, with attacks on churches and Christian schools. On Tuesday a baby was killed and 40 people, including schoolchildren, were injured in three simultaneous bombings. Two days ago a Christian man was shot dead as he travelled to work.</p> <p>“It is terrible,” said Fadi, 26, an electricity worker from Mosul who asked that his real name not be used. “Most of the Christians are staying at home, or when they go out they watch their backs.” In late 2008, killings of Christians in Mosul by insurgent groups left 40 dead and 12,000 fleeing their homes. Although they differ on who is responsible, almost everyone responds by fleeing. Gorgis Mettis, from the Yazidi ethnic minority, lives in Bartella, a Christian-dominated village near Mosul, and said that after a week of violence, many Christian families were seeking refuge in his town. “You cannot live in Mosul,” he said. “Every day you find Christians being killed.” He estimated that since 2003 three quarters of Christians had left Mosul, historically the centre of the ancient Chaldo-Assyrian Christianity practised in Iraq. “Very few are still going to church. The women have to wear hijabs. They send someone first in a car to check if there is someone outside the church,” he said.</p> <p>The problem, William Warda, a Christian and human-rights campaigner based in Baghdad, said, was that although security in Iraq as a whole has improved, during the worst of the violence hundreds of thousands of Christians fled to their ancestral homeland in the north — now the country’s most volatile area. Those left in Baghdad, which had a large community before the war, still face attacks, however. The district of Dora, which has suffered greatly from sectarian fighting, had 4,000 Christian families in 2003. Almost all have left and have not returned.A Human Rights Watch report released last monthy said that two thirds of the million Christians in Iraq in 2003 had now left their homes. About half of those had left the country.</p> <p>At Our Lady of Deliverance yesterday, Manal Matloub, 30, stepped back to admire the tree as its lights were switched on. Difficult times, she said, “definitely made us stronger”.</p> <p>The priest, Father Waseem Sabeeh, said: “Christians are a special case, they are not weak but they have a proverb about love your neighbour, and that can be interpreted as weakness. As a church, we reject guns.”</p> <p>But there are armed men at the gates of the church. “We cannot bring back the people who have left,” he added, “but we can try to keep those who are here,” he
