Making sure the data is trustworthy and usable. Today we’ll talk more on what is usable and why is it so important when I build my data strategy and structure.</p><p id="7204" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">A few days ago a colleague and myself had a discussion on how it’s best to format the data coming from Snowflake into S3 that is then ingested with a Lambda function that will send the data into Mixpanel (Sorry for my French)</p><p id="bf14" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">So now we have this great JSON object ready and fully enriched with so much context that it’s a dream come true for every analyst and stakeholder.</p><p id="9633" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">But if we don’t take two extra steps we can get amazing data that we can’t really work with.</p><p id="58a3" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">Step 1:</p><p id="fcfe" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">Define what are the questions you want to answer! And yes. It does change over time, so you don’t need to think of every single thing. Why does it matter?</p><p id="5cc0" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">So let’s look at a case. I got a real-estate product with a few results on a page and when clicked takes me to a single result. Those results have a type for example “sale” and “rent”. How do I decide how to create this event structure? Do I put them as a list?</p><p id="b209" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">The answer is kinda simple. Need to think what I’d like to answer. Maybe (most likely) ill need to send it as a few different types of data.</p><p id="55fb" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">List — Will help me answer the distribution between the two and the impact each makes on conversion</p><p id="bec9" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">Aggregate- such as “num_of_rent” that is the total number of the result for rent will help me answer what is the avg results that show rent vs sale</p><p id="5da7" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">Think you get the picture. Each question could impact what data or how I need to structure the data to be able to answer this.</p><p id="4bf7" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">Step 2:</p><p id="80e4" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">We <a class="af my" rel="noopener" href="/@alon.binman/tracking-reimagined-1bfe3355d20f">discussed this in a previous story</a> but it’s for me a crucial piece. Validate! Test it. Don’t expect that on the first or even 100th try you’ll make it work. I still need to send objects into a test project just to make sure I covered all my use cases and also get more people to “try it out” before I put this into a JIRA ticket for dev.</p><p id="e4e6" class="pw-post-body-paragraph mz na gu nb b nc nd ne nf ng nh ni nj nk nl nm nn no np nq nr ns nt nu nv nw gn bk">Find a way to validate it. It will save you so much time later and also show the impact it can make to “convince” that it’s worth the extra dev time in the sprint.
