They are often listed among the inhabitants of the land that God promised to the descendants of Abraham. The Hivites are first mentioned in <a href="/genesis/10-17.htm">Genesis 10:17</a> as descendants of Canaan, the son of Ham. They are also noted in <a href="/genesis/34.htm">Genesis 34</a>, where Shechem, a Hivite prince, is involved in the incident with Dinah, Jacob's daughter. The Hivites lived in the hill country of Lebanon, from Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath (<a href="/joshua/11-3.htm">Joshua 11:3</a>). They were among the nations that Israel was commanded to drive out of the Promised Land (<a href="/exodus/23-23.htm">Exodus 23:23</a>).
