הגשם כסימן למצב רוחני של עם ישראל. בין השאר: \"אין גשמים יורדים אלא אם כן נמחלו עוונותיהם של ישראל\", \"גדול יום הגשמים שאפילו פרוטה שבכיס מתברכת בו\", \"גדול יום הגשמים כיום קיבוץ גלויות\", \"גדול כיום שנבראו שמיים וארץ", "גדול יום הגשמים שאפילו ישועה פרה ורבה בו". בהמשך מצוין הגשם כסימן למצב רוחני של עם ישראל. בין השאר: "אין גשמים יורדים אלא אם כן נמחלו עוונותיהם של ישראל", "גדול יום הגשמים שאפילו פרוטה שבכיס מתברכת בו", "גדול יום הגשמים כיום קיבוץ גלויות", "גדול יום הגשמים שאפילו גייסות פוסקות בו". ההשוואה למעשה בראשית מובאת גם במדרש האומר שירידת גשמים שקולה כנגד כל מעשה בריאת למשבר רוחני. לכן בשנים שלא ירדו בהן גשמים רבים בתקופת התלמוד היה נהוג לקיים ימי תענית וצום. היו בעבר מוציאים את ארון הקודש לרחוב, מפזרים עליו אפר, צמים ומתפללים תפילה הדומה לנוסח של תפילות יום מאירות כשמש וכירח, וידינו פרושות כנשרי שמיים, ורגלינו קלות כאיילות, אין אנחנו מספיקים להודות לך, ה' אלוהינו, ולברך את שמך מלכנו, על אחת מאלף אלפים, ורב רבי רבבות פעמים, הטובות ניסים ונפלאות שעשית עמנו
