What is the Hu Card Index?

The Hu Card Index is a file of 158,844 cards for Chinese plant names produced by Dr. Hu Shiu-ying (Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University). The Hu Card Index was prepared in the early 1950s when the Arnold Arboretum undertook a project to prepare a flora of China. Dr. Hu, working with a staff of four or five persons, searched all botanical literature (1753-1955) to locate all names that had ever been used for plants of China. The index itself is housed in the Harvard University Herbaria building where it is available for use in person. The card index was scanned and is available for browsing.

ActKey:

Click to expand the character tree
Click to collapse
Click the checkbox to select a state
Enter a value to search the character

Taxa will be searched based on selected characters, with at least one matched state in each selected character.
The following features are currently available for the Internet Explorer browser:
Click on Character in left frame for state/value statistics, and available character notes.
Language box (where available, at bottom of character notes pages and individual taxon pages) Select language.
Dynamic Lookups (at bottom of resultant individual taxon pages) Click on links to Flora Online, TROPICOS, Google Image Search, etc. for related data and images.
Key Type box (currently available for Internet Explorer) Select List Key for an expanded list of characters.
