In sharp contrast, Lubbock’s only reservoir, Lake Alan Henry, is about 60 percent full. </p> <p>No one would have imagined just two months ago the lake would begin to bounce back so soon.</p> <p>Wednesday’s vote came after rains swelled the lake by more than 7 feet in the past six weeks.</p> <p>“Surface water is supposed to be renewable and when it does renew, we’d like to use it,” Aubrey Spear, director of Lubbock’s water utilities, said following the vote. </p> <p>“We’d rather use surface water than groundwater.”</p> <p>The reason surface water is preferable is because it recharges more readily than groundwater, which in this region the Ogallala Aquifer is being quickly depleted.</p> <p>Discussion before the vote centered on the blending necessary to make the water safe to drink and whether smaller cities could handle adding the lake water to their supply.</p> <p>Almost all said they could.</p> <p>“Any gallon not pumped out of the well field is a gallon we’ve still got,” said Jim Collins, a CRMWA board member representing Lubbock. </p> <p>Collins made the motion to begin pumping.</p> <p>Not all cities, though, intend to use the extra surface water.</p> <p>Borger City Manager Eddie E.
