The concept of an "appointed time" is seen throughout Scripture, such as in <a href="/ecclesiastes/3.htm">Ecclesiastes 3:1</a> and <a href="/habakkuk/2-3.htm">Habakkuk 2:3</a>, emphasizing God's timing in the unfolding of history.<p><b>he will invade the South again</b><br>The "he" refers to a king of the North, traditionally understood as a Seleucid ruler, likely Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The "South" refers to Egypt, ruled by the Ptolemaic dynasty. This historical context is crucial, as the Seleucid and Ptolemaic kingdoms were major Hellenistic powers following the division of Alexander the Great's empire. The repeated invasions highlight the ongoing conflict between these two regions.<p><b>but this time will not be like the first</b><br>This suggests a change in the outcome or nature of the invasion compared to previous encounters. Historically, Antiochus IV's earlier campaigns against Egypt were initially successful, but this subsequent attempt would not achieve the same results. Theodotion is also in practical agreement with the Massoretie text. The Peshitta is much shorter, and differs very much from the above, as well as from all the other versions, "And he shall do in the former and in the latter." There seems to have been something omitted, The Vulgate gives a different rendering of the last clause, "The last shall not be like the former." The reference is to the second expedition of Antiochus into Egypt. His two nephews, whose quarrels and rivalries he had hoped to utilize for his own pur<span class="accented">poses</span>, were now to appearance reconciled; they agreed to a joint occupation of the throne. It is supposed this second expedition was intended, if possible, to break up this agreement. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/daniel/11-29.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">At the appointed time</span><br /><span class="heb">לַמּוֹעֵ֥ד</span> <span class="translit">(lam·mō·w·‘êḏ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-l, Article | Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4150.htm">Strong's 4150: </a> </span><span class="str2">Appointed time, place, or meeting</span><br /><br /><span class="word">he will invade</span><br /><span class="heb">וּבָ֣א</span> <span class="translit">(ū·ḇā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Conjunctive perfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_935.htm">Strong's 935: </a> </span><span class="str2">To come in, come, go in, go</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the South</span><br /><span class="heb">בַנֶּ֑גֶב</span> <span class="translit">(ḇan·ne·ḡeḇ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-b, Article | Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5045.htm">Strong's 5045: </a> </span><span class="str2">South country, the Negeb, south</span><br /><br /><span class="word">again,</span><br /><span class="heb">יָשׁ֖וּב</span> <span class="translit">(yā·šūḇ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7725.htm">Strong's 7725: </a> </span><span class="str2">To turn back, in, to retreat, again</span><br /><br /><span class="word">but this time will not</span><br /><span class="heb">וְלֹֽא־</span> <span class="translit">(wə·lō-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particle<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3808.htm">Strong's 3808: </a> </span><span class="str2">Not, no</span><br /><br /><span class="word">be</span><br /><span class="heb">תִהְיֶ֥ה</span> <span class="translit">(ṯih·yeh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1961.htm">Strong's 1961: </a> </span><span class="str2">To fall out, come to pass, become, be</span><br /><br /><span class="word">like the first.</span><br /><span class="heb">כָרִאשֹׁנָ֖ה</span> <span class="translit">(ḵā·ri·šō·nāh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition-k, Article | Adjective - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7223.htm">Strong's 7223: </a> </span><span class="str2">First, in place, time, rank</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/daniel/11-29.htm">Daniel 11:29 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/daniel/11-29.htm">OT Prophets: Daniel 11:29 At the time appointed he shall return (Dan.
